There's no such animal as 'a ready made replacement for Jordan'. And if there were we wouldn't afford it. Pie in The Sky. An effective alternative then, and I don't know whether we could afford it or not. We might have more chance of being able to do so if we don't fill up the squad with players who are not quite good enough

Ollie Newby also on trial according to the official site. Picked up four wickets in the second eleven game against Durham

The problem is players being offered two or three year contacts when they should have got no more than one year if anything at all. Two players spring immediately to mind, a third was offered one year too many and a fourth is starting to look like he was offered one year too many. Paying a player twice what he is worth in terms of annual salary doesn't help either.

I quite liked Newby about 5 years ago. I'm surprised he never left for more first-team opportunities back then. I don't know whether he'd be a decent signing nowadays.

Have we not wasted enough money already? The fact he was quite good five years ago says it all.

Well not really, being good 5 years ago doesn't stop him from still being good.

I think the issue is that he never maintained that form and improvement of 5 years ago. His cricinfo biography says that he had a cruciate ligament injury in 2010, and since then he has specialised in white-ball cricket.Perhaps a replacement for Liddle, but that wouldn't answer the need for a Championship strike bowler, and also, in view of the ever-rising costs, for players who can perform in red and white ball games.

Somehow we have to prize a quality strike bowler from another county It won't be easy as they are likely to be under contract. However, as we know, counties will be reluctant to keep an unhappy player, so it will be more about whether we can find the funds. How do we do this? Well it might means running with a smaller squad for a few years, if we want to come in under budget. A leaner healthier squad, where more players play in all formats, may not be a bad thing. I suppose CP's concern, and it'd be mine as well, is that we don't blow the budget on players who are little better than what we have already.

Wait for real quality to become available. Don't waste anymore money on another medicore seamer. We have brought enough of those into the county already.

Well according to the rumours going around, Mills is leaving Essex, with Worcestershire his likely destination. He could have been a decent stand in for Chris Jordan and a fiery new ball partner for Magoffin. If the rumour is true, Worcestershire will have made a couple of very decent signings in Gidman and Mills

Mills is all hype. He is permanently injured. His physique is more akin to a heavy weight boxer than a cricketer which probably explains all his injuries. He has never even taken five wickets in an innings. Just because the "lazy" press talk someone up who they have never seen play does not make them the next great player. Rant over.

They were saying similar things about Jordan as well, and suddenly he found himself fit with us and been tremendous. There's a bit of luck involved in these things. I think Harris would be our best fit overall.

Whether it be Mills, or someone else, we definitely need at least one new seam bowler to replace Jordan. Probably two if any of our thirtysomething back up bowlers leave.
