A sad and shameful day for Sussex cricket. Wouldn't suprise me if Smith got his County cap awarded. We should not use this strategy to try to secure wins. More money down the drain; or will Smith boost sales. Hope Archer and Robinson can play in these 3 games.

If he ever does come back it will be in four years time, for a net practise ahead of the 2027 Ashes.

Sorry mate, but what a load of piffle. This is an amazing coup and whoever is responsible at the club for achieving it, should be given a huge slap on the back. Smith will attract cricket lovers from all over the UK and help swell Championship attendances during his three games. The irony being, only one of the three is being played at Hove against Glamorgan (May 18th). Even so, the extra attendance here should help cover the Smith costs. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/64257896

Good signing for your mob. So I assume you will be signing another overseas for the games in April?

I think the knee-jerk reaction to this is to be astounded that lowly old Sussex could pull off such a coup but if you think about it seriously it makes no sense at all. Only 3 games and only one of those at Hove so apart from that one game won’t make an impact on ticket sales. Only 3 games to get accustomed to the climate, the swinging dukes ball etc. Assuming Pujara is here Smith will block any other O/S for those 3 games. Must have cost a pretty penny and he’s a cheat!
Great PR but terrible business.

The impact Smith will have on our younger players will be immense, the spotlight will be on CC Cricket for the first time in years thanks to the profile of Steve Smith. These signings should encouraged. I wonder what it would take for you to be happy with something the board do!

I will be happy when Sussex can compete in the CC, not just for 3 games but for the whole season. We need to bowl sides out twice to win a game and we haven’t done that in the last 3/4 seasons. We need seam bowlers, top quality seam bowlers.

Will add some interest to the start of the season and get us some media coverage but otherwise I don’t think it’ll be hugely significant. Given Smith was so keen to get pre Ashes game time, I don’t think we’ll be forking out too much. More important is which bowler we’re able to sign when he leaves us. Hope he doesn’t transfer any of his quirky technique to our players!

It's astonishing LB, astonishing. It's as if some people have been struck down by both deafness and dumbness. Bewildering.
Anywho, torn a bit on Smith. Normally I'd say he's a horrendous cheat that we don't need but I'm softening cos of an overall very positive pre season, including Shadab & mainly Farbrace. Smith is one of the best batters in the world at the end of the day so difficult to criticise this one.

What overseas bowler would you lot want? Abbott is coming to my lot. Scott Boland for April? Kyle Jamieson?

I think signing Smith for 3 matches is a very positive move and aligns with Paul Farbrace’s stated aim on taking up the job of WINNING cricket matches rather thank forever “building for the future”. Yes, we do need to develop our talented young players but above all we need to end the cycle of failing to win matches and start 2023 by bringing some positivity to the whole squad
