Wanted to rejig my team the other day based on who i think we might be signing/interested in/signed since my last one Haines Orr Alsop Pujara Coles Simpson FHP Carson McAndrew Karvelas (post suspension) Hunt Clearly needing another seamer, i think Pujara will return for the time he is available. I'd be very surprised if Macca isnt back too. No Oli Carter. His keeping is coming on. His determination with the bat is top class and he often delivers when the going is tough. I just don’t get why we’ve prioritised signing a county veteran probably at the expense of Carter. There are many other areas of the team that require attention more urgently than WK. No he's unlucky i know that but I cant get him in the best side. I think you're missing the point that having him as the first batting reserve and keeping reserve makes us a lot stronger and thats why we signed Simpson amongst the obvious that we needed and wanted a 3 format captain.

Could not disagree more. Carter’s keeping is simply not up to scratch at the moment and we’ve gone and signed one of the best keepers in the country! I really hope Oli gets in the side as a batter but he certainly can’t feel hard done by to have the gloves taken off him Simo is an unreal signing and he will make a huge difference to our bowlers just you wait Carter’s WK is below average I’d agree, but he’s not a disaster and he is on an improvement curve. It seems an odd time to seemingly lose faith in him when his L-plates days may be behind him. Anyway, sure, if age doesn’t catch up on Simpson then he is a different class of keeper as it stands. Presuming we get Pujara back and they’re all fit, there is proper competition for batting places. Tom Clark seventh in line, and pushing for a place, feels about right. Alsop, for one, won’t be able to ride out a so-so season like this year. It’ll be good for all concerned. We still need a strike bowler (as well as an overseas) - not easy. The younger ones need time (eg Hunt), the older ones tend to get injured. The decent, fit ones aren’t coming to Sussex. Hopefully at least one of Hunt or Crocombe will go up a level. We would still need another high profile signing though. Two more first team signings , plus Pujara and McAndrew, and we are in business. That’s still less recruitment than Farbrace wanted btw!

Very mild rumours about Josh De Caires too. A promising youngster, not sure why he would leave Middlesex.

Very mild rumours about Josh De Caires too. Wouldn't be top of my list, but I can see it happening. Relations between us and Middlesex are clearly pretty good given their comments about dealing with us with Simpson, plus Middlesex are down a creek without a paddle financially so will need to let players go especially as their back in div 2. We know how much Sussex loves to try and get as much good PR as possible, and with the Atherton connection, that'll get the club further into the public eye. 3 format cricketer which is what Farbrace has said he wants. All the makings of a potential deal to be had. I'm still saying Andrew out at the end of each post until it's confirmed he's gone. Andrew out.

I guess it provides much needed depth and on spinning wickets we'd have the option of 2 proper spinners.

Very mild rumours about Josh De Caires too. A promising youngster, not sure why he would leave Middlesex. Going by their fans comments on FB , it’s open season at Middlesex . Natives not happy about Simpson going and fearing the worst. Good time to pick off their players. Even better to see Sussex is on it

Archer and Robinson central contracts too - congrats to both. Only a one year contract for Robinson though unlike Atkinson, Potts, Carse, Curran, Tongue and Woakes who all have two. Wood has three years. Admittedly that’s all probably with one day cricket largely in mind (with Robinson less likely to be poached by overseas T20 teams) but I get the sense there’s an impatience with Robinson and that he’s in danger of being usurped in the test team.

I think the multi year contracts are generally for multi format players to put off potential franchise sides signing them on similar multi year deals. Hopefully he does and signs a long term contract with us and we can win a lot of games again :-)

De Caires has signed a new 2 year deal at Middlesex. I thought he would. His star is rising but he won’t be on the big money yet.

Currie and Ward have signed T20 only contracts. A strange one for Currie given that he'll be at the T20 World Cup during the group stage of the blast next season.
