There is no scenario in my mind where signing one of the greatest batsmen ever can ever be the wrong call. What we gained out of that signing on and off was just incredible. I get its down to opinions and thats cool, but can you see where i see a contradiction in your comments, you want exciting signings but would take McAndrew over Smith. Youd prefer a practical signing over an exciting short term one. I do get what you mean but thats why you should be excited by the Simpson signing, it's a very very practical signing! Would you summarise the benefits you feel we received then please Therea because the only one I can think of was some short lived publicity? I reckon the huge interest that followed him into county cricket was huge for Championship Cricket. I reckon a geezer averaging 40+ despite 2 very iffy lbws was a benefit. I reckon the time he gave up to help with the Foundation was a benefit. I reckon our young players watching the GOAT and how he prepares was a benefit. I reckon the coaching he provided our batters was a benefit. I reckon a packed crowd at home to Glamorgan to see him was a benefit. Is that enough??

From my perspective it generated a fair bit of interest in the short term which was good but I’m not convinced that will translate into any significant longer term benefit. We didn’t win any of the games he appeared in, so his unexceptional batting average isn’t particularly relevant. We also didn’t see any evidence of improved performance from our batsmen, most of whom were down on their previous season’s performance. And would you really describe Smith as the greatest of all time? Greater than Bradman for instance?

If you get the chance, speak to just one Sussex player and ask them if Steve Smith's stay was beneficial to them, I already know the answer as do you really. I think myself if you really read what I write and why Smith was bought up was to prove a point that generally Sussex could sign Virat Kohli for 6 games next year and certain fans still wouldn't be happy. I genuinely believe also that fans want us to lose purely so they can pinpoint Roband Keith as issues. The club would be better off without those fans imo

I haven’t made any complaints on here about Andrew and Greenfield because I don’t feel well enough informed to do so. On balance, I don’t think the Steve Smith signing was a success but it could have worked and wasn’t a stupid thing to try. In future though, given the choice, I’d prefer continuity with loyal players who develop affinity for the club rather than a rapidly revolving cast list of ‘star signings’.

The club saw the opportunity to sign one of the greats of the game and went for it. It meant Sussex’s middle order included Pujara and Smith. However it panned out, surely that’s got to be a good thing for the ambition alone.

Apologies SP i wasnt aiming at anyone in particular but its visible on facebook and other forums the moment we lose its almost enjoyment they get to point the finger. Like i say i mentioned Smith because people want exciting signings but also moan about them at the same time and Smith is the exact example of that. I think my point ultimately is with some fans (not aiming this at you) is that Sussex could sign the best batter in the world the best bowler in the world and theyd still find reason to criticise and its hard to listen too. Maybe John is right maybe because they are friends/acqauintances it is a little harder.

Because it didnt work out entirely as planned doesnt mean we shouldnt have tried it. Say that again, Pujara and Smith 4 and 5 - err no thanks id rather have McAndrew - its mental! I think i need to check myself back in to Millview again if my view is the nutty one

I stick to my view that, at the time, we needed to bowl sides out twice and we were less likely to do that without our best bowler.

Not directed at anyone, just a general view of Sussex fans these days. So we agree practical signings are as important as exciting signings?

Sussex fans these days are at the end of a long tunnel of malaise. They’ve seen their once proud club decimated to where they’ve had to field a group of teenagers. They’ve been through 3 years where they’ve only won one CC game.
Sussex fans these days want to see their side win games, gain promotion to Div 1 and challenge for silverware.
Spending big on a ‘name’ for 3 games just because he’s a ‘name’ doesn’t make sense financially or strategically.
I’m all for Steve Smith coming for the season but not to just prepare him for an Ashes and take the place of a player who could have made a difference to the outcome of those 3 games.

Joe the gate receipts will disagree that financially it doesnt make sense! I completely agree its been a tough few years but id rather have gone through it now, knowing that we are on a solid financial footing rather than continuing to spend huge money on players we couldnt afford for short term success but you'd have to agree there is light at the end of this tunnel at last. But for points deductions we'd be a Division 1 side again. And we did only lose 1 game last year. The one day cup was a complete disaster and the T20 wasnt much better and to be honest weve probably a couple of years still before we can compete at the top end of that again. But i genuinely believe with a series of solid but unspectacular signings added to our very talented very young squad we can achieve what every wants. Its hard though 18 counties competing for 3 trophies!

RE overseas signings, I think a lot of counties will be waiting on the IPL auction in December before making moves. Especially for Aussies and Kiwis who (if not playing IPL) will have good availability throughout the season.

When are we going to hear about all these exciting signings Farbrace said he’s been negotiating since June? Have the purse strings been cut again or is it that no one wants to come to a club on the slide?
We’ve lost 3 bowlers now in Finn, Garton and Currie (for CC) and of course Chris Wright, but only signed one all-rounder.
Fixtures will be out at the end of the month, I hope we’ve got a team to compete in them!

With 6 months to go i wont hit the panic button but youd expect announcements sooner rather than later.
