So, as many expected, Rory calls it a day. Some wonderful moments but I don't think his hearts been in it for while. Thankyou for the memories and good luck in the future sir

I am sure his father with his extensive contacts is more than capable of finding his son a job.

So that salary saving coverns some of the winter expenditure , as well as the recent teaser about engaging a T20 star. Watch out for the next thrilling instalment....."Unfotuantely XXXX XXXXX has failed to recover from his operations and will henceforward concentrate ion his interests outside cricket"

Good luck to RHB in whatever the future holds for him. I think we all know that his retirment has more to do with what happened on June 18, 2012 than a wrist injury. Since he returned to Sussex he has looked a pale shadow of his former self. Let's hope he can find resolution and peace outside cricket.
And we can stick his salary in the depreciation fund to spend in 2050!

I think he'll get engrossed in his new sporting love - and who would blame him?

I add my sadness to the pot re: the announcement, although it was of no surprise and been flagged up since the end of last season. On his day RHB was an exciting and scintillating batsman with so much promise but the 2012 event and how such tragedies can affect other people shows, once again, how fragile life can be. His bowling in 2009 was also beneficial towards winning the club's last trophy. www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/jul/27/twenty20-cup-sussex-warwickshireI am sure Rory's father will find him a job within his property empire. Given both the soaring property and rental prices, It must be all hands to the pump in Mr Hamilton-Brown's company and an extra "famous" hand is greatly beneficial. One presumes RHBs decision had already been made up back in October/November and why the Club had the additional money to bring in Mills and Shahzad. The signing of Cachopa has neatly filled the void and he is probably a better batsman going forward. So, it is a win-win for Sussex although a sad moment for supporters. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/31678947

How long before we get the xxxx xxxxx announcement?

Some of us certainly expected this announcement and I remember sitting with s&f and hhsussex last season and discussing RHB's poor form and fitness problems and we all agreed that he wouldn't be at Sussex in 2015.
But I would find it hard to believe that it was a done deal last Oct/Nov and that the club has sat on Rory's retirement for five or six months.
A more likely scenario is that there were serious doubts over his form, fitness and desire to carry on last autumn but that Sussex properly exercised its duty of care as an employer and said 'don't rush any decision, take the winter to think through your options, see how the surgery goes and how you feel mentally and let's come to a decision at the end of February'. Otherwise you end up with a Gareth Berg/Middx situation.
The sad truth is that Rory's career didn't end last June with the wrist injury or with some decision last Oct/Nov or with the announcement last week. His future as a cricketer died that tragic night in June 2012 with his friend and flat-mate Tom Maynard - and with retrospect it was a high-risk and misguided (but thorughly decent and entirely honourbale) decision to sign a player who was clearly still in trauma.
Signing two new fast bowlers , whom the squad desperately needed, was not in my view linked in any way to the future of a top five batsman who bowled a few occasional non-turning off-breaks.

Perhaps, I was being a little dramatic claiming that Sussex may have already known that RHB would retire back in late October early November. Mills signed on October 31st and Shahzad one week later. I am sure this was all just a coincidence.
RHB first saw a specialist about his wrist in mid July. An operation followed not long afterwards, allowing Rory around 6 months to recuperate before making his decision at the weekend. Certainly, longer than the three months if it had been the latter part of October/early November which would have been too soon, agreed, to make his life-changing decision.
His Stats
: Scored 3,841 first-class runs in 73 matches at an average of 32.55 with a highest score of 171 not out. : Struck eight first-class centuries and 18 fifties. : Played 93 Twenty20 games scoring 1,536 runs at an average of 18.28 with four fifties. : Honours - Twenty20 Cup (Sussex 2009), Pro40 Division One (Sussex 2008, 2009), CB40 (Surrey 2011).
Very sad to see Rory leave cricket but good luck to him with a new career.
edit: Although, to add fuel to the speculation, Forum poster 'rsj posted on Nov' 27th: From a contact in Sri Lanka, Rory retires. He then reminds us this morning: So it was known back in November!
