Wow, I've looked through all this - I'm not easily disturbed but this is a s**t start to the new MB. S&F, you seem the most vocal about who should sort this lot out so...

The club took the trouble to set up this board, but they haven't explained how it's meant to operate. I did ask (on the old board) if they could explain the reorganisation, but there was no response. In fact the thread was subsequently closed! This is very unlike the SCCC we know and love.

It would be really helpful to allow posting only by those who have registered.

I've had the day off from this board as I've been battling with a particualrly unpleasant flu/viral thingy. I hope it will release its tentacular grip on me to allow me to go and watch an intriguing final day tomorrow.
Looking at the various posts and points made, many thanks to theinnercircle for some sensible, helpful and supportive comments. I think we probably have to thank you too for (?mentoring)some apologies and withdrawals from the scene from a couple of your more enthusiastic members who've been getting a little carried away on here of late.
I'm sorry to see that Adam Matthews still hasn't made the necesaary change to ensure that those wishing to post have to register. I don't think we can make much progress until Adam, or his bosses, consider it important enough for him to spend that small amount of time on the board. s and f has told us that Thursday is deadline day, but I don't really know what that means since at that stage, if nothing else is done, Adam will still be the Admin for the board. Whoever comes forward for Moderating at least needs to have dialogue with him over those practical considerations.
Thanks, s and f for your kind mention of me in that respect. I've thought of it but I'm reluctant to put myself forward for something when I don't know what it's implications and limitations are. Back to my former question: is this about being given the devolced rights to Moderate - and here theinnercircle's points are well taken - or is it about managing the board including the Admin functions? What do Sussex want, expect, or are prepared to offer the new board? That all needs to be ironed out.
My own thoughts, based on participatory (and lurking) experience of other forums are, that Moderators need not be solely devoted to that function, can post under their own name, provided that its clearly indicated what capacity they sre fulfilling. I also think that more than one is desirable, for consultation, collective learning, corroboration, maxi,um coverage of teime - all of those things.
As for anonymity, there are as many arguments for and against. Trolls will be trolls and set up fake usernames, but many people are inhibited from expressing their true thoughts by the implications of leaving a giant cyber footprint for the trolls to pick up on.
Hope to see some friends tomorrow and contribute more - and most importantly, hoping for us to put in a great bowling performance when the sun finally shines.

no I'm not volunteering, but I am the much loved moderator 3 on the old board. Thought it would be useful to give you a sense of perspective of time - it is time-consuming in the sense that you have to review the board on a regular basis - probably every day at least. In reality intervention was very rare but it is rarely straightforward, is often contested by the person and other people, so you have to have a fairly thick skin and have a torrent of pm's and sarcastic comments to deal with ! Each board is different, but you have to protect yourself from libel, obscenities, trolls and spammers at least - I often tidied up threads when for example two were doing the same thing, or if on wrong section - that isnt necessary, just useful
Your more important role to fill is the admin person - its something a teenager would have no problem with but us older folk are a bit more nervous about - it really isnt that hard once you get going as Proboards is very prescriptive

..... and just to add, I think you need 2 people at least, ideally performing both roles, otherwise a huge reliance on one person. More ideally, there were 3 other moderators who were not particularly active but I usually had a discussion with by e-mail before any intervention (in case it was a bit OTT), so perhaps a couple who would happy to be consulted, while not being very active

We seem to be attracting some anonymous children on to the board.
Still, they say you should try and catch them before they mature.

I have emailed Zac explaining that only the skeleton of the MB has been done and now the substance, posting restrictions etc.. need to be set up. Adam is too busy with his media work given the present home Durham match to help out. Somebody requires to step in with website experience, takeover from Adam, and complete this new MB.
As for finding moderators, unless people step forward, there is little point in this Board continuing. The experience of other MBs is that moderating yourself turns into chaos and anarchy. Too many trolls out there. To have a successful long-running Board requires a minimum of 3 moderators.
Who wishes to come forward?

I might offer to be part of a small team – I can usually login once a day. But, as others have said, we need a register-to-post policy immediately. Are we also able to include an “object to post” button allowing any members to send a post into quarantine, pending moderation (clearly repeated unjustified use should lead to suspension).

dfl,
Many thanks for your interest. I have no experience of Proboards or setting a MB up so can't answer your questions.
I have just received a positive response from Zac:
"Thanks for your note. I will get this finalised but as to managing the board and putting the protocols in this will need some thought.
I will revert soonest
Best
Zac."

'My first line disappeared so I am putting it back in'
I can spend some time helping out as a moderator as long as it was part of a team of say three or four. I cannot commit to (be) moderate every day but would certainly want to help if it meant the survival of the MB. It gives me a way to keep in contact with cricket and Sussex in particular.
I do agree with FB that the moderators should try and be impartial. I think I can manage that but it might be a bit of a stretch at times. But if I am accepted as a moderator I would still want to post my own sometimes insightful, sometimes silly, slightly irreverent but hopefully never insulting views.
Some of the recent threads at this turbulent time have been in dire need of moderation.
We also need to post the rules somewhere prominent on each topic (or whatever it is called), I am bit old but I see you can have stickys and you can lock threads so maybe it should be on each main discussion group stuck and locked. This is the sort of thing we need help with.
