Will Gidman's move to Notts has of course been confirmed, but what about other big names who are rumoured to be looking for a change of county? I've read rumours regarding Pieterson, Panesar, Mills, Denly, Harris, Buck, Eckersley, Cobb, Madsen and Tredwell. This happens at the end of every season and of course most end up staying put. What of our own out of contract players, will any of them move on? Personally, if Surrey complete their likely clear out, I wouldn't be surprised to see them come back in for RHB.

I might add, that I know he isn't out of contract, but when has that ever stopped them, or anyone, come to that

Pietersen is a freelance cricketer and so can do / go where he pleases. Denly, Harris, Madesen, Panesar and Tredwell are not out of contract. Surrey might throw the cheque book at Mills although he has spent more time on the treatment table than on the cricket field in recent seasons. Buck, Eckersley and Cobb may leave for pastures new.
As for a Surrey clearout this is unlikely as they only have five out of contract players which includes Pietersen, Solanki and three youngsters. A return to Surrey is highly unlikely for RHB given the way in which he departed.

And what of David Willey when Northants go down?... Not sure, but I think he's just signed a new deal. What of our own out of contract players? It's unlike Sussex to let younger players like Luke and Will just run down their contracts. Those are two players we could ill afford to lose

As for a Surrey clearout this is unlikely as they only have five out of contract players which includes Pietersen, Solanki and three youngsters. A return to Surrey is highly unlikely for RHB given the way in which he departed. Middx are reportedly keen to off-load Denly, Harris, Rossington and Rayner. Sussex might be interested in Harris. Rayner could interest Kent if they lose their spin attack. Rossington's loan to Northants could be made permanent. The rumours that Madsen will leave have been on-going and peristent and Derbyshire are reported to have offered Darren Stevens a two year deal to replace him as their experienced top-order bat (which could suit DS, who wants to bat higher and bowl less as he's 39 next season and I'm told he is getting married this autumn and is considering a change of scene to go with it - that is if he gets past the ICC appeal against his acquital over the Bangledash match-fixing). I'm sure Graham Ford has big ideas at Surrey and will want to shift out a few; and he is the sort who is prepared to take a few punts, like the lad he signed from Somerset/Devon yersterday. Alex Blake is another he is interested in and Adam Riley, too, given that Batty is 37. Ansari and Riley bowling in tandem at the Oval could recall the glory days of Laker and Lock, if both live up to their billing as the most promising two young spinners in the country. Then there is the Tredwell saga and the rumours about Luke Wells spread by Dobell on cricinfo have not been negated by the announcement of a new contract. And RHB? Well Cachopa has taken his place, Finch looks promising, Machan will learn from his disappointments this season and Yardy is ready to return and apparently has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet, so there is no place for RHB on his form of the last two seasons. Perhaps a move to Somerset or even a job outside cricket beckons? There are always plenty of pieces in flux at this time of the season and there's no telling where they will all land. Sometimes those who seem certain to move end up staying and those who seem settled and are still under contract end up swapping counties unexpectedly. It's not quite as dramatic as the last day of the football transfer window yesterday; but it's fun and it keeps us from boredom at the end of the season and into the autumn and has been given added impetus over the last couple of years as it has dawned on all the best players in div two that if they want to progress their careers, they really need to be in div one or at least at a TMG.

Usually there's half a dozen quality players on the move each winter. I'd like Sussex to be in the market for two of them. Is that realistic, given the competition and resources at the disposal of a few counties? Perhaps not, but I hope we find a way of competing. Assuming we don't lose anyone we'd rather keep, adding Tredwell and a quality seamer, would see us back to our competitive best. I have faith in Nash and Wells as our opening partnership and do not expect them to suffer a second below par season. Joyce and Wright have emerged as two of the most dependable batters on the county circuit. Add to them, the emerging youngsters Cachopa, Machan and Finch, plus RHB and the experienced Michael Yardy, and the batting is in safe hands. We could also have a hungry Matt Prior available and looking to recapture his Test spot. A new seamer bowling in tandem with the evergreen Magoffin, plus Jordan when available and Tredwell would be a decent championship attack. In fact, it would not be unrealistic to suggest we could be title challengers. In the one day game, that trio of spinners, Beer, Tredwell and Yardy is as good as it gets in the one day game. As in the championship, I don't expect our batters to suffer the same loss of confidence as they've suffered this season. Most of our batters are capable of scoring quick runs so in many ways, should be ideal for the one day game. Two players could reverse our fortunes in all competitions.

Rumoured that Graham Ford would be prepared to let Tim Linley go, even though he has another year on his contract. He was on Sussex's books back in 2006. Would we be interested in re-signing him?
It's a difficult one. We don't need him if Anyon can rediscover his 2013 form and if Jordan has blown his England chances. Otherwise, he'd be a good addition, I think.

And talking of seamers, I'm told Hants are releasing David Balcombe.

Linley's best days are behind him, need to do much better than that methinks

I can understand Surrey being interested in Riley but not Blake or Burke.
As for Denly, Harris, Rossington and Rayner leaving Middlesex let's wait I see. I reckon at least three of those will start next season at Middlesex. Rossington may end up at Northants.
Linley's only had one good season in division two with the dodgy ball which hoops all over the place.
I'm not surprised to hear that Balcombe is being released.
I have wondered if Hamilton-Brown might give up cricket. Certainly his wrist seems to be taking an awful long time to heal. With Cachopa in place it looks an awful long way back to the first team. There is absolutely no chance of him returning to Surrey SWC wouldn't allow it and Somerset is unlikely too.

Not surprised by this move at all. Although is a move from Derbyshire to Leicestershire a move forward? Quality player still under 21...,of course I have no idea of the reason for the move...why are you not surprised. There were rumours about him leaving all season. Although I though it would have been for a higher profile county like Notts. A move to Derbyshire is something of a sideways step.
