From what I hear there is zero chance of play today and the inspection is a formality.Hope that is wrong. Am currently waiting on the same scenario at Tunbridge Wells and expecting abandonment there, too. But if by some miracle they get under way, I can be there in 20 mins (T Wells, not Merchant Taylors!)

Inspecting at moment but surface looked pretty wet from earlier, dull as well and still the feeling of rain in the air. Noticed four of 14 squad named now playing for seconds at Eastbourne so not sure the plan here if they get the ok to start.

The weather looked really bad for all four days. Lets hope we can get a few bonus points out of this game although the outlook is grim

Lets hope we can get a few bonus points out of this game although the outlook is grim If we can get two days play, I'd rather both teams forfeited their first innings. That way there's a chance of winning. It won't happen because the bonus points system encourages the draw.

In hotel room in Watford and just started chucking it down outside again. Middlesex twitter feed says 14 hours continuous rain overnight makes playing prospects pretty bleak again. The amount of water being dragged in front of the verti drain efforts yesterday suggests the same. Oh well looks like another visit to the Elton John Wig Museum. Will keep an eye on the twitter sites but having spent two days sat under an umbrella a third has got to be a "no no".

There are few sporting experiences more depressing than a cricket ground in the pouring rain. Hope you find something else to do.

Has play been officially abandoned for the day? The BBC are showing that it's now close of play

Game now abandoned without a ball being bowled. Watford and surrounding areas certainly not a good place to find alternative entertainment for four days. Hopefully forecast for Sunday and next week is better.

Gloriously sunny here in Aylesbury, about 20 miles away

So how many points for a complete abandonment - 5 each? That is really poor. For something like a no ball bowled game it should be at least 8.

Last season it was 3 pts for a draw or an abandonment. It was increased to 5 pts this season on the grounds that draws are often hard-fought, and a sterling rearguard action to bat for three sessions to save the match on the last day, for example, deserved a greater reward than three pts. In the context of that argument, hard to justify 8 pts for players who have done nothing but indulge in a four day card school!
