I take it all back. Sussex are taking us to the final over. Dare we dream!
12 off 16 balls. Will is willing us over the line. Another 4!
Just 6. Can Will get his 50?
6 needed off 12 balls.
now a no ball and a free hit to the huge cheers of the crowd. It's get better, now a wide. we could win via extras.
A stunning victory. The last 5 runs were extras. Durham self destructed. Sussex are still in the Cup and SKY are given a gem of a match. Fantastic stuff! How can anyone say cricket is a dull sport.

By the lack of comments and the size of the crowd I think most people share my view of this competition, bring back PRO40. That won't happen because of the ECB's obsession with the England team. Without the counties there would be no England players. Briliant from Arafat and Beer. However, our batsmen need to stand up and be counted as Wright, Joyce, Cachopa, Machan and Brown got themselves in and then got themselves out when well set which almost cost us the game tonight.

By the lack of comments and the size of the crowd I think most people share my view of this competition, bring back PRO40. Not sure I agree with that, Mrs D. I was opposed to scrapping the 40 over format and going to 50. But I have to admit I was wrong. The 50 overs competition so far has been fantastic , and far more exciting than the interminable T20 Bash, which never seemed to gather any momentum and is only just getting to the 'business end' three months after it started on a freezing Friday night back in mid-May. The 50 over cup has the advantage of being played in a block which creates an intensity among players and spectators and takes place in the best part of the summer weather-wise when pitches are hard and true, ensuring 300+ run chases are more than gettable. Kent, for example, have conceded a mind-boggling 956 runs in three games - yet they haven't lost a match yet, because they have scored 961 runs. It doesn't get any closer than that and a margin of plus five runs has translated into 5 pts! If T20 Bash is meant to be the counties main cash cow, it is surely obvious what the ECB needs to do - play the 50 over stuff in May/June and concentrate the T20 Bash into a intense block of fixtures in late July/August, when 200 will probably become a par score. Sussex have four more cup matches in the next week, which is thrilling. I'm just sorry I'm going to be away and will miss all of them! Can I also recall an argument we had during the T20 when I advocated using Arafat as a pinch hitter and was told I was a know-nothing idiot!

I watched a fair bit of this game on TV and as usual the main excitement, the will they/won't they one day game excitement, was restricted to the last few overs, making around 92 pretty average ones. The movable power plays and introduction of 2 white balls to try and spice up the middle overs proves that they are boring, so adding another 20 overs to that middle section makes no sense. The empty seats reflect the fact that the working population can't get to the start of the game, I'm planning to go to one home game but will miss the first 20-30 overs because of work which is annoying but short of finishing at 1.00 am there is not much else that can be done. However, unless ODI's become 40 overs I guess we are stuck with it.

Despite other comments, I enjoyed the game and it was a thriller at the end. Unfortunately, 50 over cricket is here to stay for the next few years. Perhaps spice it up a bit by splitting both the innings. EG Team A bats for 25 overs, Team B bat for 25, Team A again bat their last 25 and set a tearget for Team B! Back to today's game. Good innings from the Durham batsmen. Stoneman, Mustard, Borthwick and Colly(62 off 62). Sussex batsmen all got a start but then got themselves out in some cases rashly. It took Yasir and Will to show them how to do it! Well played to both of them. Surrey tomorrow at the Oval. Kent and Surrey tied today. Expect it will be a "runs fest " pitch again! Enjoyed today at Hove. Managed to get a day out pass as I will not get to Canterbury tomm- Prior engagement!

As a non-believer when it comes to 50 over cricket, I went to the match yesterday with an open mind.
The weather was good but the crowd was on the small side. Until the last hour, it was a bit soporific. I was glad to have some company - I don't think I would have stayed if I'd been on my own, and that to me is the test of entertainment value.
It was a terrific climax - a tight run chase is always the best part of a limited overs match. Overall, though, I question whether it's worth sitting there from 2:00 waiting for a climax in the last hour. That's delayed gratification par excellence!

Or is there a general malaise with Sussex cricket at the moment. I've been fortunate to get to a few more games this season and, other than perhaps the festival games, I've felt, atmosphere wise, something was lacking. This seems to be reflected on here, where the message board isn't as vibrant as it once was. Game threads barely stretch to a couple of pages. Of course that might not be an accurate reflection of how it's been, and I base my opinion only on the half dozen games I've attended.

These days I have to rely on the box for cricket. The win came out of the blue and I hope that the Sussex younger generation will have learnt that when playing competitive games one should rein one's temper in. Hastings the Durham bowler clearly did not and that, to my mind, contributed vastly to the Sussex win. The expression on his face was ugly. In saying that I am certainly not discounting the marvellous effort of Beer and Arafat who kept so cool - outwardly at least - when facing the outright hostility of Hastings. He completely lost his head bowling the final over.
So well done Sussex and well done all the players who contributed to the win and the last 30 minutes or so of edge of the chair stuff from a nonaganerian!
