Coverpoint : Sussex can't bat, can't bowl and can't field!
What a load of negative tosh. It’s early season and the boys have competed hard in the first 3 matches with some outstanding individual performances (in difficult conditions at times). To say they cannot bat, bowl or field is the kind of ridiculous outlandish comment we can be doing without- it’s simply not true. There are clearly ways in which we can improve but show me a team or individual that isn’t in that situation ! Early days and we’ve got to be glass half full otherwise what’s the point !
Big fight on tomorrow.

Well the fragility of the top-order following the non-recruitment of any batters over the winter is there for all to see. However, we do keep scrapping our way to a score, invariably due to the lower order, the exception being the Gloucestershire game when, curiously, we might have won it. So despite a fragile looking top-order we do bat a long way down.
Interestingly though, all the top 7 have made at least one score, we just need to fire as a unit and not constantly be 50/3 or 80/5. Easier said than done! Maybe some tinkering with the order will help, as has been evident with Finch dropping to no.4.

A close and interesting game that could go either way. One thing that is certain is that it won't be a draw. Football fans are known for being fickle - one moment their team is the greatest, the next moment they want to get rid of half of their team, sack the manager etc. Cricket supporters tend to be a bit more thoughtful, but, without trying to be too dramatic, I see today as being an important day in the season. A win would be a morale boosting result against the Division's favourites, a defeat would leave with us with a record of 3 draws and 1 defeat which doesn't look great.
Whether we can get over the line may depend on some of the senior batsmen getting enough to put us within striking distance or even taking us there. The lower order has performed well so far this season, but whether the likes of Robinson and Wiese can see us home under pressure may be another matter.
I am going to start the day feeling positive. By this evening, the comments on this thread may not be like those of football fans, but it would be nice to see us come away with a bagful of points.

A 16 point win would put us second in the division although Warwickshire and Kent who’d be first and third have played one less game. A loss would see us in the bottom half with a lot to do to get back into contention.
Big day today.
GOSBTS!

A great performance to beat Middlesex. Ben Brown played a captain's innings to see us home after the pre-lunch scare. We have some weaknesses in the side, but let's not forget some of the positives too.

What a win! And that’s without Sharma, Archer and Jordan.

Sussex can't bat, can't bowl and can't field! Maybe the lower order can bat! We've been there before. The reverse goat mouth worked. The lower order can bat. Brown played a captain's innings ably supported by Burgess. I was really pleased that Finch got his maiden championship century in the first. The performances of Robinson in the first and Briggs and Wiese in the second were excellent. It will be interesting to see who makes way when Archer and Jordan return. I think it should be Garton and Wright. The catching definitely needs improving but we are underway and have something to build upon. Beating Middlesex is no mean achievement. Well done Sussex.

Typically, I couldn't make it to the most exciting of the four days. I cannot keep emphasising my excitement of having Andrew as CEO and Jason Gillespie as Head Coach. A fantastic combination for success. Today, this was proven. I doubt under Davis if we would have won this game. And Brown is embracing his potential now as a Captain who leads from the front.
So much to look forward to this season.

Great days cricket. Positive vibes all around the club- the team morale is fantastic and the players commitment to one another isn’t to be sniffed at. Happy teams are winning teams and Dizzy has a lot to answer for on this- a master of creating happy, confident cricketers who are given support and autonomy to go out and express themselves on a daily basis. Fantastic to see young English cricketers performing and honing their skills. Every great player was young once and every player needs support and chances to succeed. Well done to all involved and let’s keep the positive vibes going. Believe in the process and the performances take care of themselves. Only scrutinise the performances and you’ll generally miss what’s really happening before your eyes- culture is so important, well done Dizzy.

A great pleasure to have followed this game, although frustratingly via computer and phone. Lots of failings - yes, we don't have the right weight of batting and our catching is poor - but masses of positives, not least the form of Ollie Robinson, after such a long struggle with injuries but now showing why he was worth the waiting for; for David Wiese, so much the hope and so often the disappointment of the Davis regime - perhaps just getting a spur to his confidence now without massive expectation - and very pleasingly Dannie Briggs throwing off the last 6 or 7 years to show that he has really exciting qualities in the 4 day game.
Great stuff Sussex and looking forward to a memorable season.
