Our third match in the Royal London One Day Cup takes us to Taunton. Somerset have started the tournament well with two comfortable wins over Surrey and Glamorgan. At The Oval, Somerset bowled out Surrey for 129 with Craig Overton taking 4-29. Somerset then knocked off the runs with 8 wickets in hand despite losing two wickets on 35. In their second game, they scored a massive 372 for 7 with Hildreth scoring 159 backed up by Abell scoring 40 off 25 balls and Overton scoring 23 off 10 balls. Glamorgan were never really in the hunt but managed 289 in reply.
Somerset’s impressive start could have been matched by Sussex if Hampshire hadn’t recovered from 133 for 6 with 16 overs left and 118 runs needed on Saturday. We go into this tough looking game though needing a win to keep up with the leaders.
Our last two games against Somerset in this competition have brought two narrow defeats. Last season’s game was affected by bad weather. After Elgar had led Somerset to respectable total of 303 with an innings of 131 not out, Sussex were set a revised total of 165 from 20 overs. Laurie Evans contributed 40 off 20 balls but we couldn’t quite match the required rate and fell 10 runs short. Coincidentally, in 2016 at Taunton, we fell 10 runs short chasing 237, although from 95 for 7 there was something of a recovery to reach 227 for 9 as Archer, Shahzad, Beer and Briggs contributed more with the bat the main batsmen.
A win would put us back in contention, a defeat would have most of us, I suspect, thinking that RLODC qualification is not going to happen again. We will see.

Logging on at 247-5 after 41 overs it looks as if the match will depend on a big accumulation of runs from these late stands. Max Waller at least has finished his spell - Beer without the nearly-man tag, having done the same job very successfully in this limited but important sphere for Somerset for several years now. 300 would be a minimum I think.

A stout effort from the Sussex batters. 341-7 with Wright getting a century. The commentators reckon Sussex are "just" in the driving seat given the Taunton pitch is excellent to bat on and the fact that Somerset recently have been scoring runs for fun (405 and 372 in the RLC at this ground).
Is 341 enough?

That was good to watch! A classy Luke Wright ton put us into a good position but then we looked as though we might run out of steam until Wiese and Burgess with a mixture of good shots, slogs and well taken 1s and 2s.
It looks an easy batting track but we are in with a decent shout here.

As philh points out, this match can be watched live at: www.somersetcountycc.co.uk/match-centre/I find it a little embarrassing that most county grounds who have live-streaming are offering this as a free service, yet only Sussex Members get ours for free and all others have to pay a sum (is that right?)

That's two dropped catches from Sussex in the first few overs. You cannot give Steve Davies two chances without being punished as the latest 6 from him proves. There's Davies 50 as another goes for six. "Catches win Matches" could not be a better truism.

Phil, Taunton is a lovely ground and the Somerset supporters so friendly. I was last there 2 years ago. Have a great time and watch out for that scrumpy!

Hildreth out to Briggs. It's looking promising. Somerset need 102 to win off 10.5 overs. edit: Now Overton out two balls later. It's looking very promising. Last 10 overs. Somerset require 9.2 runs per over to win. edit: The fat Lady is clearing her throat!!

Fantastic win for Sussex by 75 runs. After the previous two Somerset home games, Taunton was looking like a fortress, but after a tight and disappointing loss to Hampshire on Saturday, this is a great comeback by Sussex.
Great stuff from the lads and good to see Wright finding form. Onwards and upwards. Looking forward to Friday and Middlesex.

Wins don't come much better than that. Somerset had started strongly in the RLODC with comfortable wins over Surrey and Glamorgan. Sussex batted with purpose from the beginning and it was disappointing when Luke Wells played on trying to pull to leg. Luke Wright looked in form from the beginning. A Somerset supporter sitting behind me said that he looked good for a hundred when he only had about 15 on the board; I disagreed and was thankfully proved wrong. He batted beautifully. Finch looked comfortable until he got what looked like a harsh LBW. Brown had a rare failure for this season, but Evans and Wright looked comfortable as we took the 'easy mid-term runs' with regular singles to long on and long off and the odd four. When Wright went the run rate dropped as Evans tried to steady the ship until Wiese and Burgess put on a sparkling 100 partnership, each gaining 50s, as we piled on the runs in the closing overs. It was a mixture of cultured shots, slogs and nicking ones and twos all around the ground.
Two early wickets fell to stop Somerset in their tracks, although three good catching chances went begging. If we looked clumsy at catching, our ground fielding was keen and very sharp. After Robinson's two valuable early wickets, the game was starting to tip in Somerset's favour as they were matching the asking rate and scoring steadily - Hildreth and Renshaw showed what class batsmen they are with a stand of just under 100 for the fifth wicket. Then, Wiese got Renshaw to nick one and the game swung back to Sussex as Briggs dismissed Hildreth and with Sharma ran through the lower order despite one or two lofty blows.
A really good team performance with the glitch being our catching, but, hey, the enthusiasm out there was for all to see. Indeed, Somerset supporters near me couldn't understand why we are not in Division One of the Championship.

What a tremendous win by the boys yesterday, and our opponents are no mugs on their own patch Concerns remain about top order strike rates, especially if Luke Wright doesn’t fire Yesterday he did, and we batted well around him Then the bowlers did their stuff, never letting Somerset get within striking distance
