Few would have predicted that with almost half of the T20 pre-knock out fixtures completed, Gloucestershire would be top of the Southern table – and, what’s more, with a game a hand over 2nd and 3rd placed, Kent and Somerset. Gloucestershire come to Hove on Wednesday in good form with consecutive wins in completed games over Middlesex, Kent, Somerset and Glamorgan. Their only defeat was in their first game of the T20 season away to Somerset. Assuming the game isn’t washed out, the likelihood is that the winners of this game will be top of the table on Wednesday night, although Somerset can take top place if they beat Hampshire.
Two weeks ago, Sussex won a tight game at Cheltenham in the County Championship, but that may not count for much when the two sides play at Hove on Wednesday evening. Gloucestershire have scored well when batting with runs shared around the team. Only two players have scored fifties in the T20 competition so far, but quick runs have been shared amongst Klinger, Jack Taylor, Cockbain, Higgins, Noema-Barnett and Hammond. In the bowling department, wickets have been shared around, but in the three games that Aussie Andrew Tye has played, he has stood out, taking wickets at an economical rate.
In recent T20 games between Sussex and Gloucestershire, Sussex have performed well. Last season at Hove, Sussex dismissed Gloucestershire for 138 thanks to three wickets by both Chris Jordan and George Garton. Sussex stuttered in the run chase until Laurie Evans scored 45 not out in a fifty partnership with David Wiese. In the return fixture, Sussex scored 156 in their 20 overs before rain finished the game.
As I posted for the last game, four wins and one defeat look a whole lot of better than three wins and two defeats, particularly after two no result games. Can Sussex go top on Wednesday night? We will see.

Luke calls right and decides to bat first. Good night for a big score.

Well this is pathetic, win lose or draw. I was wondering when our lopsided line-up was gonna be exposed. It's tonight, and it won't be the last time. You can't have six bowlers if it's detrimental to your batting line-up. We have the best five man bowling attack anyway, sixth option not really required.
Still no Garton at the Sussex Kid Killers. Needs to be playing, simple as that.

Tom Smith bowled well. Believe he's the left arm spinner we let go before giving a real crack to. Has a career T20 average of 23 odd and under 8 economy I think. We've had to draft one in that costs more for something similar. I'm reminded of a horrendously wet Take That song that I'm ashamed to have put my ears through, A Million Love Songs. No not that one, something about patience.

I find it astonishing that we have four x-factor gun bowlers in tonight's team yet for some reason we need to back that up with two more bowlers and seriously weaken our batting line-up in the process. Is it me? Am I nuts?

Well the pace we have has been the undoing on this wicket as well. No way Mills deserves to have gone for as many as he has. Hammond has looked clueless against him bar one shot...extra zip has carried those edges!

Needed an extra 20 runs there. The extra pace definitely helped Gloucestershire so that might have covered it.
Definitely a batter light...Wiese didn't even bowl!

Why do we produce those type of pitches, when our whole ethos, is to produce genuinely quick bowlers? Even our youngsters are encouraged to just run in and bowl quick

The introduction of Mills has upset the balance and energy of the team... imho.

What a disappointing evening that was. I sat in a terrible traffic jam around Lewes and while listening to the radio, I heard Root getting run out and England losing 6 wickets by the time I had managed to circumvent the jam. Things didn't improve much when I got to Hove. Salt's run out was crazy and came from being pinned down for a few balls. When Luke Wright holed out after driving (with shots not a car) 4 X 4, I muttered to my neighbour that we had lost. Defeatist attitude, you might say, but you have to start well - or, at least, we do. It didn't get much better as Evans was the only one to hang around. He batted well, but like others, he found a fielder just when it looked like he might give us an outside chance of a decentish total. T20 games are cruel. When things go wrong, they often get worse. And, last night, was a good example of that.
Our bowlers, to be fair, performed pretty well and Rashid Khan impressed, arguably deserving even better than his impressive figures. However, defending 127 doesn't leave a lot of room and Gloucestershire got over the line fairly easily even though hopes of a surprise crept up for a brief period.
The crowd was very subdued, but when you start badly, it's hard not to see it as a lost cause early on - in my case, from about the third over of our innings.
I'd agree with @wicked cricket that Mills has disturbed the balance of the team, although I am not sure recovering from 27 from 4 after 5.3 overs is ever a platform for victory. I am not sure what Mills adds in the bowling, to be honest. You could argue that he was unlucky to return figures of 0-30, but wild swishes go for four or six too often and, dare I say it, it's all very well beating the batsmen all ends up now and again, but he needs to hit the stumps. I would prefer Robinson in the side myself. And how we could have done with another solid batsmen in the side last night to give us a chance of holding something together with Laurie Evans. Brown, Finch or Wells would have been more useful than Wiese.
It's easy to be wise after the event, of course, and T20 is about winning more than you lose and accepting there will be days when you lose because things don't click. Let's see what happens tonight.

Needs to be playing, simple as that. I think you have a point. We have a strong bowling attack and we ought to trust them. I assume the sixth bowler is there in case Briggs starts getting knocked about, but generally that has not happened. However, it was the batsmen who got us in trouble last night and I am not sure there is much hope when the top order batsmen contrive to get us to 27 for 4 after five and a bit overs. Having Wiese at six and not bowling him made matters worse but did not change the result. The only ray of hope last night was that Evans might have batted longer and scored 80 or so or that Rashid Khan took two or three more wickets, but, in truth, we weren't at the races.

Quite rightly Gillespie is not a happy kangaroo over last night's very disappointing batting performance. The Argus even states he was "stunned" by the low score and quoted JG as saying, "We lost four wickets in the powerplay. That’s unacceptable. We need to be better ... It was our top-five batting. We can’t leave all our batting efforts to (David) Wiese, (Jofra) Archer and (Chris) Jordan. They are there for a bit of bonus at the end when we need to really accelerate in the last five overs." He added, "We had David Wiese come in during the powerplay. That’s not good enough." www.theargus.co.uk/sport/16393608.jason-gillespie-demands-more-from-batsmen-after-sussex-sharks-flop/?ref=eb
