Before we have had too much chance to celebrate Sussex’s emphatic win on Tuesday over Glamorgan, the team are on the coach to Bristol to face second placed Gloucestershire. Two wins from our last two games and Sussex will qualify for the knock out phase. After that, it gets more complicated. A defeat at Bristol would mean that we would probably need to score 1 more point than Glamorgan in our game against Middlesex on Friday and hope Surrey do not win both of their last two games. A ‘no result’ at Bristol must be considered as there is a high chance of rain there on Thursday although it looks more likely early in the day. If it is washed out, a win against Middlesex would see us through barring exceptional results.
So, let’s look at the game itself. Sussex were well beaten by Gloucestershire at Hove on the 1st August after a poor batting display set the visitors a target of 128 from 20 overs. Laurie Evans and Jofra Archer were the only two to contribute significantly on that night with the bat. Danny Briggs and Rashid Khan took two wickets apiece to give us brief hope, but Gloucestershire always looked winners and got over the line with 4 wickets to spare.
Gloucestershire have already qualified for the Quarter Finals so let’s hope they take their foot off the gas. They have performed really well though with 8 wins and only 2 defeats. Interestingly, the last team to beat Gloucestershire was Glamorgan which came two days after they beat Sussex at Hove. Work that one out! Runs have been shared around amongst six players, but Jack Taylor has an impressive scoring rate of 213 and Noema-Barnett is a dangerous fast scorer. In the bowling department, Andrew Tye has been very consistent and economical while David Payne is top wicket taker.
One thing we do know is that it won’t be an easy game. Gloucestershire batted, bowled and fielded well at Hove. If Sussex can play as well as they did against Glamorgan, a win is certainly within our grasp. Can we get the much needed two points at Bristol? We will see.
