I’m hoping this season will be a wake up call A lack of on field investment has seen us slide in all forms of the game Think that’s a little harsh. We made the final of the Blast and are challenging for promotion (although that looks less likely now) so there’s definitely been progress from last season. I think the Dizzy effect has been a very positive one, not least bringing on our young batters. The decision to not add a top order bat to the CC squad, especially when van Zyl was out injured, was the only negative I can see. Some astute signings in the winter to strengthen the batting and we will be a force to be reckoned with.

So disappointing we will be in Div 2 for another season. The standards in Div 2 are so much lower than in Div 1. The hierarchy of the club has chosen to prioritise the T20 with two overseas signings, and only a 6 match CC signing. So no great surprise how the season is ending. Membership income has declined significantly since we were relegated, in contrast to some other counties. Doubt if the club cares, under the current management.Care to elaborate, fred?

Ben Brown and David Wiese are likely to end the season as the two with the highest batting averages. They have rescued us here again against Warwickshire but not enough to give us more than a very thin chance of winning this vital game. A shame that both perished in the nervous nineties, particularly Ben on 99.
Warwickshire all out for 70 with Jofra and Ollie sharing the 10 wickets, perhaps?

Doesn’t look as if Warwickshire are set on drawing this match.

So much for our much vaunted bowling attack!

Any interesting comments at this morning’s forum?
It is harsh to say “so much for our much vaunted bowling attack”
They have been superb this season and we were only in with a chance of promotion going into this week’s game, thanks to their performances this season.

Warwickshire are, unsurprisingly, not taking any chances. Whether they bat on until they can call it a day is still unclear. Whether they try to force a victory by bowling Sussex out in 3 hours remains to be seen. Let's hope we hold out and finish the season without a CC home defeat.
It's been a disappointing game. This has looked like a big game for the last few weeks, but it has frittered out to a dead game in all likelihood.

Who on earth ordered this flat wicket?
In a game we needed to win you’d have thought we’d have asked for a result wicket with something in it for our pace attack.
Baffling!

The game appears to have descended into farce. I hope the spectators have voted with their feet.

At least, Phil Salt seems to be enjoying himself. And, he has claimed his first first class wicket. As for everyone else in the ground.....

You've gotta to hand it to Sussex. Another 67 extras handed to Warwickshire. Will the bowlers never learn?

If I was being cynical (puts hand to mouth in horror), I might say recent events and performances lead me to believe that we actually didn’t want to scrape promotion this season. Culminating in the suicidal batting attitude of some in the later matches when promotion was becoming a possibility, and even though we can’t control other teams lust for glory, we could control the ghastly flat wicket that was prepared for the Warwickshire match. In a way it makes sense. We’re not actually ready for the first division. We’re two senior batters, at least, short, and our bowling attack is tuned for the white ball game. I except Ollie R in this, and Danny. We also need a dedicated Captain. Ben Brown has done a very decent job, but nobody should be asked to have three roles in a side. And certainly not in the First Division.
I think the lads have done just enough this year. They started to look jaded at Lords. I think the 50 overs was too early in this particular season for them to have performed as they should and could have later, and if we finish 3 in the County game then it’s not bad. We should have won the T20.
Dizzy won’t be too disappointed. Coaches always think further ahead than us fans. His report to Rob on the season I’m sure will recommend at least one senior batter more plus another from the overseas pool who will actually play a whole season. They have money for that left over from this year.
Nothing would have been worse than just scrabbling our way to a promotion we weren’t ready for and immediately going down again. Ask Chris Hughton - he is all about survival not glory. I think Dizzy and Rob know that.

I would agree with chrischammond that this team is not strong enough for Division 1. It’s the batting department where we are clearly lacking. Considering that we lost Chris Nash and Stiaan van Zyl for most of the season, our batting has arguably done better than expected. The two Lukes have scored less than most people would have hoped but Ben Brown and David Wiese, who saved us from defeat in this match, have performed well to hold several innings together. We seem to have struggled when batting is tough which is when you hope the top five or six grind out enough. However, we are nearer a Division 1 side than we were at the end of last season, so I’m definitely a glass half full supporter.
