Fearful and defensive declaration, a bolder move could have made all the difference.
You look to your spinner to win you games on the final day and ours didn't get a single wicket, as usual. Why Briggs is in ahead of Beer despite being consistently bad for so long I don't know. It really is, at long last, time to give Beer a run in the side. Nothing to lose, everything to gain. I think he's 30 now but I don't believe a single person can judge him on 4 day cricket because he's never had a run of games. Astonishing given his 1st class stats. Averages 26 with the bat too.
Will Beer
1st Class Record
Mat: 16 Inns: 24 Balls: 1847 Runs: 1002 Wkts: 32 BBI: 6-29 BBM: 11-91 Ave: 31.31 Econ: 3.25 SR: 57.7 4w: 0 5w: 2 10: 1
So far we have beat what is by far the poorest side in county cricket and lost and drawn with Leicester and Northants, probably the two next worse. We're in a state these days alright.

I was surprised that Adrian Harms didn't shy away from asking Gillespie the burning q's about the top order. Also surprised that Evans wasn't selected. That should change for the next game. Good points about Beer. Brown is determined and yes, leads with a welcome return to form with the bat but he isn't yet a good captain. Wasn't pro-active when Sussex were fielding and didn't seem to get much support from Gillespie. Still, it was a good game.

Where to start? First post of the season - not because I haven’t been watching, but because nothing has changed. We have no proper openers, and no reliable No 3. All our bowling is injured or has flown the nest. Ben Brown is still doing at least one job too many, and the solution to that is going to Warks. There seems to be little connection between the white and red ball teams. In fact, the red ball team appears to be of lesser importance to the club. Understandably, perhaps, as we are in no way fit for Div 1 cricket. Is it a matter of money? I don’t know. The cricket is a drop in the ocean compared with the money spent on the football team. Is there something in the water in B&H? Football and cricket both promise so much, perform with occasional brilliance and then let the fans down over the long run. Send for Chris Hughton - he’s doing nothing.

Well, having seen the Andrew interview during a RLC game a few weeks back it seems obvious to me that Andrew's spec is to concentrate on finances. Hopefully that will put us in a position to spend some one day. It was also clear to me that his plan was to hire a seemingly top coach and hope he gets the best out of what is here, even after people leave. Remaining competitive is a hope and taking us anywhere close to 10/15 years ago, or even 5, isn't anywhere near the agenda.
We are well are well and truly one of the bottom feeders, like in the 90s. The noughties were out of this world for a club like Sussex though, they truly were. We won't see that again but aiming close would be nice.
For me, I fail to see what Gillespie is doing well.
