Farbrace’s interview at the end of the pre season tour suggesting that Pujara, Seales and Ollie Robinson will all be available for our first game against Northants. Great news if true, would be good to get an early win to start the season off.
Clark Haines Alsop Pujara Coles Simpson (c, wk) Lamb Robinson Carson Karvelas Seales.

Yes that is good news, especially if it indicates that Robinson is expected to be fit. Other good news is that Bertie Foreman has won the Bill O’Reilly for his performances in Aus this winter. On that form, he could give Carson some much needed competition for his place.
The lineup you suggest looks good although I do think FHP should be ahead of Lamb in the pecking order. Also I’d bat Carson ahead of Robinson.

To be honest it would be embarrassing if our overseas weren’t available for the first game! Oli being available is amazing news however

Imagine dropping your leading run scorer from last season it would seem harsh but i do tend to agree with Joe in the sense that, that position you have to decide whats more important, the runs or the wickets. That said youve got 3 high quality seamers in Robbo, Seales and Karvelas and able back up in Haines so maybe you could lean on batting depth.
My team would be
Haines Clark Alsop Pujara Coles Carter Simpson Carson/Foreman (i'm just leaning towards Carson but think Foreman will definitely get a chance this season) Robinson Karvelas Seales
I think he'll have FHP as first name on the team sheet too be honest.
The depth and quality of this squad all of a sudden doesnt seem a huge issue when you consider theres at least 2 more seamers in reserve and a couple of batters.

Haines Carter Alsop Pujara Coles Simpson FHP Lamb / Carson Robinson Karvelas Seales
That top order could be rejigged but I’d go with the six above. There is a horrible Orr-sized hole. Carter has made more telling innings for us even if Clark’s stats are ok. Indeed I’d go Rogers next in line, rather than Clark. FHP was a far more effective batsman than bowler last season, but over the course of his career its varied. He could take wickets second change. I don’t like Robinson or Carson (yet) at eight, so Lamb in to bolster the batting as much as anything (unless pitch is spinner-friendly). That’s a competitive team. As ever with Sussex, a lot comes down to Robinson. He can win games on his own.

Farbs is an old fashioned type it'll be 4 seamers 1 spinner 1 WK and 5 Batters and if 2 or 3 are all rounders thats an added bonus.

I’d go with Carter over Clark. Oli Carter played some very responsible and important innings last season and deserves to play somewhere in the top 6

Based on Farbrace's end of India tour interview, I am trying to understand where the red ball competition for places is. Pujara,Simpson (bad news for Carter and Tear), Robinson and Seales will all play if fit. Even if they perform badly all 4 are guaranteed a start. That leaves 7. Haines and Clarke will open. This could be a problem area as I can't find competition in the squad for the openers. Pujara steps up maybe? Or Rogers? Alsop 3. Who is pushing him? I could see Coles or Carter maybe, but only if Alsop has a run of low scores. 4 Pujara. 5 Coles. Would rather see him at 7. 6. Simpson. He needs to score consistent runs. 7. Hudson P or Lamb. Decent competition between these two. 8. Carson.Has to bowl well or give Foreman a go. 9. Robinson. 10. Seales. 11. Karvelas. Are Hunt and Crocombe pushing him? Quite a long tail to this order. Should we sacrifice a bowler for a batter? Will be interesting.

Should we sacrifice a bowler for a batter? Will be interesting. It is likely Clark, Haines, Alsop, Pujara and Coles will be the top five. Carter will be in the wings, followed by Rogers and Tear. So there is some competition. I agree that we have no convincing second opener. It won’t happen but I wouldn’t mind seeing Carter given a chance at the top. He has shown he can dig in, take responsibility and score quickly. This isn’t to say he’s a natural opener, more that’s he’s the best of a bad bunch. Agree that the drop off in batting from FHP or Lamb to Carson feels steep, despite Carson’s respectable average . There will be shortcomings though because we haven’t recruited how Farbrace wanted. Robinson playing several games is like a signing though. As long as he’s in the picture we will be competitive, as we will get enough runs. PS You should have more faith in Coles. if we don’t play him up the order, plenty of other counties will.

Coles at 7 would be an inexplicable waste of talent.

Personally I think Alsop or Pujara (probably Pujara given Hughes is an opener and is here later in the season to avoid messing about with the order) should be opening (both have done it before).
Carter should be in the starting XI without question at number 5.
My XI would be:
Haines Pujara (has the right temperament and technique to open) Alsop Coles Carter (I don't think Clark is an opener as he may have opened but his stats in that position are not good) Simpson wk Hudson-Prentice Carson Robinson Seales Karvelas
