BM, do you think the Tredwell thing is now dead in the water? Kent's reluctance to part and Zaidi's improved form, seem to have made signing him, less of a priority. I'd still like to see him here at some point, I liked his gutsy attitude, and his one day bowling in tandem with Beer and Yardy, would be a huge bonus.

The last words from the player himself were at the end of the season. He was asked by the local Kentish press if he would still be a Kent player next season and he declined to confirm that he would and instead answered, "I have some big decisions to make". You'd have to read that as meaning that he was still contemplating forcing the issue with Kent over the remaining year on his contract if they would not guarantee him a first-team place; but he's been silent since then. Adam Riley took a step or two backwards as the 2014 season went on and so it is possible Tredwell could be reinstated as Kent's first-choice off-spinner at the beginning of next season. But Kent cannot afford to let either of them rot in the reserves so one of them is bound to be sent out on loan next season. Therefore possible scenario : Sussex takes either Tredwell/Riley on loan for 2015 and signs Tredwell at the end of the season when he becomes a free agent. Other possible scenario: Zaidi is a fast learner and has genuinely worked out how both to contain and dismiss Div One batsmen so we don't need an off-spinner (particularly if it was the neophyte Riley who was available on loan - althouigh who knows what advances he might make when he has the benefit of Robinson's superior coaching skills on the Lions tour this winter?). Do we think Zaidi would have been able to spin Sussex to victory at Horsham in the way Tredwell did? I'm not sure... In other words, I have to admit I ain't got a clue what's going to happen!

This is Ajmal Shahzad's twitter page. A very decent 15,300 followers which leaving aside Matt Prior (202k) and Luke Wright (114k) places Shazza in third place of Sussex CCC player popularity. His nearest rivals are Ed Joyce (4,669) and Chris Nash (3,042). twitter.com/ajshahzadA feature about Shazza's move from the ECB website. www.ecb.co.uk/news/articles/shahzad-swaps-notts-sussex

The meaning of Ajmal in arabic is 'The Most Handsome One' ... Nothing more to say really .. " Just a tiny bit fond of himself, perhaps? Still, at least Sussex comes first in his resume.

Ed Joyce on Shahzad: "He's a massive extrovert in a quiet changing room which has been great for us."
Interesting comment that sort of confirms the impression from outside the dressing room door that the Sussex team are a bit too nice, polite, inoffensive and wouldn't say boo to a goose - perhaps lacking that "ruthlessness" Robinson said last week he was looking for.
The culture in English cricket is against loud, noisy, awkward, truculent types - whether it is KP, Stokes, Coles or Shahzad. Such players are routinely described (usually by people who don't know them) as "high risk" or "high maintenance". The Aussies have always cherised such characters, from Lillee to Warner, but we want them all to be thoroughly 'nice chaps' like Cook or Tredwell, who never complain, even when asked to carry the drinks for five years.
I'm not saying Shahzad isn't a 'nice chap'. I'm sure he is. But he's got something else about him, too, and it's probably that 'something else' - and finding a way to channel it positively - that makes him such an exciting cricketer.
What interested me was that Joyce - who is the epitome of the thoroughly nice chap - should publicly recognise that you also need a bit of feistiness in a dressing room.

From Paul Weaver's Guardian article today www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/apr/22/sussex-worcestershire-county-championship-match-report“Mark Robinson [the Sussex cricket manager] has offered me a home here. He’s a fantastic man manager. Everyone here says the right words and you go out there full of confidence. They’ve given me TLC. “Mark told me that I would be bowling down the hill today with the wind at my back – normally I’m bowling uphill and into the wind. This morning I looked in the mirror and felt I had this performance coming. And I owed the lads something after not being able to bowl in the first innings because of illness.” Another aspect of good man management is allowing people their own chance to shine in their own way. A lively extrovert may not be disruptive in a quitere dressing-room if he is given licence to express himself. That was clearly the role he undertook with such glee yesterday, constantly chirruping and urging everyone one while in the field, complementing Luke Wright. The result was a relaxed but disciplined attack that wasn't going to be written off as second best to anyone.

This interview with Shahzad carried out by Adrian Harms after the match yesterday sums the man up, imho. He has so much to offer on so many levels and given the right encouragement and support Shahzad could be "massive" for Sussex. I cannot stop being impressed by him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfgjejioGPk&feature=youtu.be

Shahzad was always likely to be a shrewd signing. It is Mills that is the gamble as he never stays fit for any length of time.

Tymal Mills is a lovely guy.
I had the opportunity of chatting with him earlier in the year and what came over about his injury was this. He so wants to achieve in cricket but there seems to be a moment in the growth of some young professional sportsmen where injury occurs as a way of blocking their progress.
I am not a professional psychologist but it seems young footballers (Steven Gerrard in his younger days being a good example), in particular, are faced with continuing injuries which they have to grow through to become the mature sportsman. It is their challenge. Their growth into manhood.
Of course, Tymal is a man, but his previous injury has effected him to the extent where any niggle, bit of pain, body doesn't feel right, nerve tingle etc.. sends him off the pitch "as a precaution".
Having had back problems for much of my adult life, one knows this well. The fear can take over, the loss of confidence in the body, the belief 'if I go through the pain it will only make it worse etc..' Therefore, the problem lies as much in the head as in the actual body. As Tymal admitted, 'he needs to trust his body again.'
And why I have great faith in Robinson and Lewis as they both understand this dilemma. Perhaps, it is as much about TLC and encouraging the player to overcome his anxieties and regain his body confidence, as it is about basic physiotherapy.
Help Tymal through this challenge and he could become immense for Sussex and a top England bowler.

I'm told that England selector (at least for now until Michael Vaughan is appointed and sacks them all) Angus Fraser was at Hove on Wednesday and was highly impressed by Shahzad.
Could we be in for a repeat of the Chris Jordan scenario - Sussex rehabilitates a talented fast bowler whose career has lost momentum but only get one good season out of him before England whisk him away?
The one thing that might militate against is that Shahzad is 30 in July, which is quite late for a quick bowler to be recalled to the England side...

So Shahzad would be...a 5th columnist, the enemy within? Perhaps he is a plant, whose main purpose is to awaken the long-established mole, Robinson, and bring the decadent south to it's ultimate doom?

The real plot is Gillespie to England and Robinson back to his native Yorkshire.
