I think there is much missing of the point here. Sure, the booing of Moeen was personal - but personal because he is of Pakistani origin (despite a white English grandmother) and identifiably a Muslim.
And can you explain why Indians would boo him for being a Muslim? There are close to 200 million Indian Muslims, the third largest Muslim population in the world. The Indian Test team has had plenty of Muslim stars. At least a couple of Muslims - Pataudi and Azharuddin - have captaned India. At Edgbaston, Moeen was dismissed second ball by one of India's Muslim bowlers, Mohammed Shami. Or did you and your friend not notice that?
His Pakistani origins may or may not have had something to do with it (hard to overlook the wars between India and Pakistan over Kashmir in this context). But how on earth can you tell us with such certainty that Moeen was booed because he was "identifiably a Muslim"?
I'd hate the idea of anyone being targeted for being a Muslim because my daughter-in-law and my two grandchildren are Muslims. But there is no evidence that was the reason and considerable evidence to the contrary. Its simply sloppy thinking and lazy journalism based on unsupported assumptions and then blithely asserted as "fact".
It wouldn't matter if it was simply a cricketing issue; but huge sweeping claims are being made about the alleged failure of multiculturalism based on these accusations that don't stand up to five seconds of intellectual scrtutiny. And in the current climate of xenophobia generated by UKIP and the Tory right that is dangerous and irresponsible.
Thank heavens for once the ECB showed some common sense and didn't kick off about it in the way that Dobell demanded. That four months on he still insists on berating them for their sensible restraint makes him look a tabloid fool.
