No surprise this has happened as England cricket sponsor, Waitrose, set themselves up for a laugh. On June 17th, Twitter was awash with various pics showing the Supermarket's latest cricket stunt. A young England mascot is being sought. Typical of the tweets came from a poster called Imran Khan. Not that I'm making a pitch for it, but this gimmick doesn't work quite so well if you're not white..Kevin Pietersen saw an opportunity too to take a gentle swipe at Waitrose and the ECB. He cheekily tweeted today: Hi, @waitrose - please pick me?! 10K retweets should do it!It's hard to believe that KP last wore an England cricket shirt in January 2014. www.waitrose.com/home/inspiration/cricket/cricket-competitions/mascot-competition.html

Once more Steve Hollis tweets a picture of the latest Chris Adams column. I asked him last week why there was a need to do this. Why can't the column be uploaded to the Argus website? Steve explained the tekkie person in charge of administering this simple job, for whatever reason, doesn't always do it. How frustrating for Steve and Chris Adams! This week Adam's column becomes ever more eclectic with articles on Euro 2016, the England cricket top order and the joys of Arundel and out-ground cricket.

Sorry for the sake of Steve Hollis, who is an excellent journalist, that the Argus has now descended to this level of farcical incompetence.

No surprise. The owners Newsquest have cut and cut the staff. I think Steve H told me it is now subbed - in so far as it is subbed at all - at a printing hub in Weymouth. Much of the copy is now provided for free by students in Brighton on a NCTJ training course.

Belated Bollywood News
__________________________________ unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/18570/threadDelighted to learn that Mike Yardy won the 'Bollywood Dance-off' by beating fellow contestants Henry Butler, owner of Butler’s Wines; Kirsty Pollard, General Manager at Brighton Marina; and former Blue’s Clues TV presenter, Kevin Duala. They were supported by dancers from Brighton Academy. Compered by Danny Pike from BBC Radio Sussex, between them the four amateur dancers raised over £7,000 for the charities Rockinghorse and DM Thomas Foundation for Young People. The dance-off was part of this year's charity Midsummer Ball, at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, on Saturday June 18th. 500 guests were treated to an Indian-themed evening of food, fundraising and entertainment, in a bid to raise funds to improve the care and wellbeing of young people in Sussex. During the evening, guests were treated to a sumptuous Indian feast, fine wines and cheese, as well as an opportunity to enjoy the famous indoor dodgems. There were also a number of other fundraising activities, including a game of ‘heads and tails’, wish trees, and a charity auction. Over £80,000, in total, was collected for both charities. www.rockinghorse.org.uk/news/brighton-turns-bollywood-charity-ball/

Today is a special day for one of the greatest Sussex bowlers in the Club’s 177 year history. Happy Birthday Mushtaq Ahmed - 46 years-old. Much has been said and written about the diminutive 5’4” tall Pakistani. Mushy arrived at Sussex for the beginning of the 2003 cricket season with a view from some quarters that he was a washed-out has-been including a then Sussex Board Member, John Snow, who attempted to stop his signing. Mushtaq duly proved all his critics wrong by taking 103 wickets that season, largely helping Sussex win their first ever Championship trophy. The word legend is not a strong enough word to describe his impact on the club. In 85 matches Mushy, with his right arm leg break, took 478 wickets at an average of 25.34. He was the leading county wicket taker for 5 seasons in a row and in 2006, Mushtaq, once more, took over 100 wickets helping Sussex attain their second Championship Trophy. Sadly, persistent knee injuries forced him to retire in 2008. Today, Mushtaq Ahmed is Head Coach of the Pakistan National Cricket Academy after previously being their National team’s spin bowling coach. Mushy will live forever in the memories of those Sussex supporters who were privileged to watch him bowl.

The Piers Morgan Family Cricket XI match played annually against Newick CC returns earlier this year. It is this Sunday rather than the usual last weekend of July. newick.play-cricket.com/website/web_pages/172372 As ever Morgan has invited several ringers to join his family team and they are:- : Kevin Pietersen : Michael Vaughan : Mark Austin Who is Mark Austin? He is the ITV News Reader who took over from Sir Trevor McDonald and one of the most celebrated TV journalists of his generation. He and Morgan have become friends as Austin is a relief presenter for GMB. Co-presenter Susana Reid will toss the coin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Austin_(journalist)A claim to fame is that Austin and I attended the same Highbury Journalist College, near Portsmouth, in the same year and we co-organised the football team. Will he remember me? I very much doubt it. Austin and BBC Deputy Political editor, John Pienaar, are the two stars from that year. Another, but whose star has now faded, was our centre forward, Brian Alexander, who scored most of the journo college goals. He went on to become a sports journalist for 'The Sun' and in 1993 created ignominy for England football manager Graham Taylor, after creating the legendary headline - "Swedes 2 Turnips 1" - prompting That famous SUN front page picture. I say 'faded' because after a glittering Fleet Street and BBC Radio career he went on to become a media and public affairs adviser whose chief client was Sepp Blatter and football world governing body FIFA! Alexander is presently Editor of the lifestyle magazine Essence of Surrey.Meanwhile, the two Piers Morgan Family T20 matches (against Newick CC 1st XI and 2nd XI) begins at 1.30pm, entrance is free, food and drink are available. Up to 750 people usually turn up each year but with the presence of KP that may rise to around 1,000. As parking can be a mare arrive early. Unfortunately, the weather is looking a bit iffy for Sunday. Meanwhile, Morgan attempted to persuade Luke Wright to join his family team given Luke lives a stone's throw from Morgan's country residence, but the Championship home match against Glamorgan has kiboshed that. Perhaps, next year? Here is their twitter banter.

This has nothing to do with cricket but the statistics are so astonishing and so prevalent, they should be published. After yesterday's suicide bomber attack on Istanbul Airport, I went to the 'Chicago Project Security & Terrorism' website and put in their search engine, "How many suicide attacks in the last 10 years." Here is the answer (this doesn't include the increasing atrocities during 2016) Total Attacks: 3,823 Total Deaths: 32,692 Total Wounded: 76,690 Avg Deaths per Attack: 8.6 Avg Wounded per Attack: 20.1If you need evidence to show the world is insane there you are. Thank God we have cricket to distract us! cpostdata.uchicago.edu/search_results_new.php

Perhaps, the ECB should be seeking another major sponsor in light of the Waitrose supermarket financial accounts released today. Profits at Waitrose are down 17% to £66.6m following "exceptionally tough" conditions in the grocery market for the year to January as like-for-like sales fell by 1.3%. Total sales slipped £100m to £5.9bn and higher pension costs associated with owner John Lewis also contributed to the slide. In documents filed at Companies House, Waitrose said it was operating "against a backdrop of exceptionally tough market conditions and continuing food price deflation". Basically, as the middle-classes are squeezed and take the low road to far cheaper supermarkets like Lidl, Asda and the Poundshop (you would be surprised how many middle-class people are shopping there with sunglasses and hats covering their faces!) Unfortunately, all the 20% discount vouchers sent to hoards of "Hovians Actually" last year has made little difference. Should Waitrose be seeking investors rather than England cricket mascots?

Because I am one of them. Seriously, I was in a Poundland the other day and I saw a lady I vaguely know who lives in the poshest part of Hove. She quickly turned away when she saw me, embarrassed and awkward. Perhaps, it was my BO!
