All change off the field continues apace with the news that Club Media Officer, Adam Matthews, is departing for a job, it is rumoured, at the MCC. Sussex CCC began advertising for the available position yesterday. An opportunity to send your CV closes on May 18th. I hope to speak with Adam this week to gain further information. Unfortunately, he is not at the ground today. Yes, I noticed the advert and it seems to confirm that Tom Rose will not be replaced as Marketing Manager since the Job Description implies direct responsibility for a variety of duties and to "Work closely with the Chief Executive, Director of Cricket and the Commercial Department to manage key channels of communication to Sussex Cricket stakeholders." Otherwise it contains all the things you'd expect to see there and it should be a very busy job, supported only by the inevitable intern. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/LiteratureRetrieve.aspx?ID=143305With the job losses that have followed the hiving off of catering to Centerplate, and the departures of Rose and Matthews there have been quite a few changes and it seems that the public face of the club is wearing quite a different look. Too early to say whether this wind of change will blow through the coaching and playing functions as well, but it must be a possibility and it suggests that Rob Andrew and Bob Warren are not being complacent about the club's much-vaunted freedom from debt.

Hhs,
"...it should be a very busy job, supported only by the inevitable intern."
You make a good point. As the club's off-field projects expand, so the line between being a media officer for Sussex CCC and Sussex Cricket Ltd becomes blurred. Where is that line?
Other County media officers only have their CCC to cover whereas at Sussex this role has been greatly expanded to take on the Sussex Cricket Foundation and all other cricketing and Community developments.
At present, the intern from Bournemouth Uni, Matt Neocleous, has taken on that off-field media role but he's leaving next month; and with the loss of Tom Rose who was helping out with the workload for both Adam and Matt, to expect the new person to take on all the different roles will not only be very demanding during the cricket season but may put applicants off from applying, once they become aware of this high workload.
Rob Andrew needs to resolve this discrepancy. Personally, I believe there should be two professional media officers working at the club - one for on-field activities and the other for off-field but when money is tight can Sussex CCC afford both? For how long do you take on inexperienced interns where the only outlay for the club are travelling expenses, just to keep the media budget to a bare minimum. That is not a professional outlook.
Whoever does take on the job they need to be full of vigour, where unsociable and long hours during the summer are not a problem. ie. someone not with a young family.

Much is happening on and off the field for Sussex Cricket Ltd during the rest of May and beyond. Off-the-FieldOne of the biggest annual events for the Sussex Cricket Foundation (SCF) is their Disability Day which is tomorrow (May 10th). I attended last year and it's really inspiring. Having an autistic cousin, I know how excited disabled people can be when involved in such a special and unique cricketing event like the one at the County Ground. I aim to attend in the morning. sussexcricketfoundation.co.uk/disability-cricket-discoverability-day-comes-to-sussex/Last Year's Event

During my regular trawling trips around the world-wide web, I come across blogs that write about sport including cricket. Here is one called THE NATIONAL RUST and one that includes a paragraph or two about Sussex CCC written by someone called Ivan Conway. Perhaps, a pseudonym which reminds me of an all-time favourite - The musician Ivor Biggun - whose other name is Robert "Doc" Cox. An artist who has spent his artistic career sounding like the dialogue from Carry On Films. I met him once in a Twickenham Music Studio recording his latest innuendo ditty. He was a little cocky and full of thrust. This was before he reached the dizzy heights of appearing on BBCs 'That's Life' from 1982 to 1992, taking over from another dubious character, Cyril Fletcher. I digress. Conway's writing about Sussex CCC sounds more like a supporter suffering from long-term depression. I wonder how he feels now after three consecutive wins? Perhaps, the Prozac has kicked in? Anyway, always good to come across fellow local bloggers. As Ivor might enquire... "How's your brass rubbing going?" nationalrust.com/not-a-great-time-for-sussex-sport/

I have just returned from the Disability Day at the County Ground or 'Discoverability' as the event has been renamed. A quite excellent morning and very inspiring. Adam & SCF freelance Cameraman John
I spoke to Adam Matthews, who has worked at Sussex CCC for 7 years, and he confirmed that he's moving to the MCC and their Media Comms Department. He starts work on June 19th, so the club must get a wriggle on to find a new Media Officer and fast, given applications are open until May 18th. I learnt our present media intern, Matt, may now stay at the club until September rather than returning to Bournemouth University next month, as cover and to help with the transition.

The sun shone over a very special event at the County ground yesterday, held each year to exemplify Sussex CCCs determination to prove that their Community project is all inclusive. The Disability or Discoverability Day as it has been renamed, is now in its sixth year, and is a major part of the Sussex Cricket Foundation (SCF) calendar year. Around 220 people attended ranging from those with mild learning difficulties to quadriplegics, overseen by 105 volunteers from local schools, businesses and Club sponsors. Roger Newman & Miranda BrownThe day is always inspiring and full of positive intent. The most popular participation formats are table cricket alongside hitting and catching a ball. Around 2,000 disabled people from around the County are involved in cricketing pursuits and new hubs are being created all the time. At present, the number stands at nine. Miranda Brown, a disability cricket co-ordinator, typifies the hard work and dedication put in by volunteers around the County. Her own son, 17 year-old Elliott, is Captain of the Sussex Disability Softball Team, and she is their manager. They play 6 matches a season and reside in the South East League where the cricket is known as 'Super 9s'. John AbbottThere are 6 Counties involved including Middlesex, Kent, Gloucestershire and Essex. Rules are different in that there are 9 players per team; 35 overs each side; if a batsman scores 50 they retire; take 3 wickets then step down; but the matches remain highly competitive where 150 runs is a par score. An aero softball is used. This particular format is increasingly popular. There is even an England Disability Softball Team. Table-CricketElliott's Sussex side have had a strong start to their season with wins over Middlesex and Gloucestershire. Recently, he scored 52* before retiring. "It's not easy at times," he explains. "When you're playing alongside other team-mates’ disability difficulties; but I am enjoying being their Captain." Sussex's next match is against Essex on May 21st at Hastings. The new Sussex Cricket President, John Abbott, was in attendance, enjoying the on-field hubbub of activity. He is also Chairman of the SCF fund-raising Committee and I was staggered to learn that during their Benefit Year in 2016, the Foundation raised £150,000. "It was hard work but well worth all the effort," he smiles. One event at the Boundary Rooms that included star guest Alec Stewart, raised over £21,000 alone. Elliott Brown
The SCF is a charity in its infancy but has already made a strong impression on the Sussex Community. On Sunday at the RLC Gloucestershire game the Foundation, during the interval, will hand over a cheque for £7,500 to the Matthew Hobden Trust. Former close friend, Stuart Whittingham, is part of the proceedings. As for 2017, the SCF have a number of charitable events lined up including a London Flagship one still to be announced. John has a fascinating backstory to his business career including an overseeing of the ICC anti-corruption Unit. "There is great emphasis on prevention today and I believe the situation is improving," he comments. "Although, there is a constant need for vigilance." As for his new appointment as Club President? "I am wearing 'L' plates," he laughs. "I am finding my feet where the shoes are rather large after taking over from David Bowden." He continues, "One role is working alongside the Club Board where they may seek my advice and ideas." Aroop Tanna & Jake Woolley + Paul Francis (Hardball/Softball)
As you walk around the event, it is the dedication and enthusiasm from those involved at the highest levels of Sussex Disability Cricket that so impresses. Whether this exudes from Roger Newman, Head of Participation & Growth; Development Officer, Aroop Tanna; or Coaches like Paul Francis and Jake Woolley. It is inspiring to see. A development presently being discussed is wheelchair cricket.

The final media and marketing push for the RLC 50 over game between Sussex and Gloucestershire on Sunday at the Saffrons, Eastbourne, is under way. This is the latest from local paper The Eastbourne Herald where Eastbourne Cricket Club Chairman, Ian Fletcher-Price, and the instigator of returning a first-class match to the town after 17 years remains confident when he proclaims, "We will do ourselves proud." www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/sport/eastbourne-cc-chairman-fletcher-price-we-will-do-ourselves-proud-1-7956440The seats are aligned ready for SundayAnd Ian has every reason to feel upbeat. Hospitality is a sell-out; sponsorship is strong; the last remaining club dining tables for lunch sold out a month ago; and ticket sales have been buoyant with a chance that the match attendance, on the day, could be close to the ground's 3,000 capacity. Bar poor weather, one senses the day will be a great success rounded off, hopefully, with a Sussex win. And let us hope Eastbourne becomes an annual out-ground event. Given all the hard work and enthusiasm placed into Sunday, Chairman Ian Fletcher-Price deserves this. www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/sport/sussex-at-the-saffrons-the-list-a-records-1-7958011

Or is this an optical illusion?

jonboy, I am really looking forward to the match. I am going with a small group. Lots of "stuff" going on and lots of people to meet. Should be a great day. And the weather forecast is improving by the hour. The former rain has now been surpassed by sunny intervals. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2650497?day=2Fb, An optical illusion, surely?

Oh, I take it that the grass is banked, then? I've never been to a match where that many rows of seats are on level ground. It's not as if the action is on a higher level, like the cinema or theatre. Hope you're right, fluffy!

As a long time Eastbourne resident and someone who has been to the Saffrons hundreds of times I can tell you it's definitely not banked.

I've been a couple of times and can't think where those chairs are? From what I remember there's a wall on two sides, a road/car parking on another and the scoreboard on the fourth?

Do you reckon I'll be able to see the play if I don't manage to get in the first couple of rows? I dont remember seeing seating quite like that before.

Here's a controversial thought. The pic comes from the Eastbourne Herald. Could it be photo-shopped using one pic of a chair? ie. It is an artist's impression of how the seating may look on the day?
