We might have to do some wooing ourselves, as there doesn't seem too much in the way of seamers released by other counties. With Prior presumably available next season, we are certainly well stocked with batsmen. Perhaps some sort of swap could be in the offing. We'll certainly have more scope the following year when, with a lot of contracts ending, we can team a new overseas with UK passport holder Steve Magoffin.

Interesting, if slightly creepy stuff S&F. If we can't find a quality bowler, and we have any sense, we won't waste money on two average seamers, like we have been doing of late, but instead sign one quality OS bowler for June when Mags turns 'English' - be easier to find too, much easier.
We're already leaning too far across the OS rule for my liking but as I'm the only person in the world who cares about that, including all the county chiefs across the land, I guess it must be alright. Harris or Mills would be fine by me but I'd definitely rather have Mags and say, Starc, from June than Mags, Newby and Hussain, for example, from April. Especially as you only need four bowlers early doors and we'll probably have Jordan for the first month or so. Although I think we'll have him for most the season, but that's a hunch.

I guess the fast bowler who can take 50+ wickets per season in Div One has become cricket's equivalent of the 20+ goals per season Premier League striker in football. Every winning team needs a good keeper, reliable defensive players, creative midfielders/middle-order batsmen and tricky wingers/spinners. But the 20 goals/50 wkts striker is the cutting edge and the scarcity of such players means they cost a fortune.
That's why Chris Jordan was such a brilliant find - it was like discovering Didier Drogba in Crawley Town's reserves!

I can see sense in this. If we can obtain a decent young quick, great, but if not, yes let's put the money towards a decent OS in June. We may indeed have Jordan early on, and as long as they remain fit, we should have enough seam bowling to see us through April and May.

Unless Jordan is discarded completely after the matches in Sri Lanka and the World Cup, then he's likely to be part of that squad. From May 21 to June 23 there are Tests, ODIs and T20 against New Zealand, then from early July there are yet more Matches against Australia, going on until 13 September. If he does become a key member of the squad, even if not playing in all matches he's likely to be placed on permanent standby and kept away from the vulgar pursuits of the county game. We might have him for one first-class game and a couple of T20s if we're lucky.

There's a whole host of Aussie seamers that would be tasty. Starc may be unrealistic, I dunno, they have so many I'm not sure they know their best four but whoever ain't touring England we should look into. Could do with him being a tasty one-day player too - in fact, that'll be a must. Point is, let's not waste this opportunity by signing two average journeymen in April when we can sign one quality player in June.
If Jordan ain't about early, as I now suspect he won't be, thanks HH, we should still be OK with what we have until Brett Lee or someone turns up : )
FYI BM, it was more like finding the Drog in Chelsea or Arsenal's reserves, really.

Quiz & Curry Night: Spen Cama Pavilion: October 2nd: 7pm-10pm
The first of 4 bimonthly ‘Quiz & Curry Nights’ held at the ‘Spen Cama Pavilion’ during the winter months was a great success. This popular event is now in its fifth year. The quiz questions are set and presided over by well-known Sussex supporter Simon Stewart aka Sweatysock. What makes this event so refreshing are the original questions, set by Simon himself. None come from the usual pub quiz books. The cost of quiz participation is £5 and when combined with the curry £10. The next event will be held on Thursday November 27th. Simon StewartFor those who didn’t attend, pit your wits against those who did. The winners ‘Do or Die‘ won with 135 points and garnered £30 prize money. Runners up were ‘Rose Hawthorns and a Petal’ in 2nd with 126 points (£20) and ‘Hooray Bills’ in 3rd with 120 points (£10). The questions will be posted tomorrow morning. The answers will follow on Tuesday. No sly peeking in books, on mobiles or computers, please (!) The Winners: 'Do or Die'

Twitter is abound with news of Chris Liddle's 'stag do' on Saturday. As mentioned in the recent 'Players Awards' report, Chris is to marry in November.
A group of Sussex players, staff and other friends attended a horse-racing event at Fontwell Park. Certainly, a far more cultured choice than rampaging around Brighton in a superhero costume. It is unclear if Chris came away a winner but a fair few were inspired by 'Barts Tips' - a Twitter tipping service.

This bit of tittle-tattle leads on to a more serious reminder for Members and their connection with Horse-Racing. Don't forget that your Membership card still allows you FREE entry to various local racecourses this year including Goodwood (Oct 12th), Plumpton (Nov 17th) and Fontwell Park (Oct 22nd: Nov 7th/16th/26th: Dec: 9th/26th).
Meanwhile, the major ground outfield 'refurbishment' at Hove has forced the cancellation of this year's fireworks display. Sad news as it's the best one around. So, the chaos of Lewes is, perhaps, the next best local one.

We're going to the Fireworks at Horsham CC on Sat 25th October. Been before and it was excellent, a good alternative to Hove if you don't mind the travel.
It's only £4 to get in if you book before 13 October.

'The Great County Club Volunteers of Our Time'(An Occasional Series Highlighting Volunteers From Other Counties) ___________________________________________________________ Dave Allen, 64 Hampshire CCC Volunteer, Archivist, Blogger, Broadcaster, AuthorDave Allen expresses the very best of the volunteering ethos that keeps the heartbeat of county cricket robust and well. Without such people counties off the field would grind to a halt and become a soulless shell. Volunteers make a club what they are - often vibrant, friendly, embracing and above all represent the signature of the county and the tune they emit. Sussex greatly depend on their volunteers. Without them, the museum would not exist, the books unwritten, the classic thoughts and sensitive touches around the ground undone. Some suggest counties rely far too heavily on the goodwill of their support. At Sussex the charitable arm of the club led by volunteer David Bowden made more money in 2013 (£250,000) than the off-field commercial revenue generated by well paid hierarchy and marketing staff members. Quite a thought. So, at Hampshire, Rod Bransgrove and Co are blessed in having the all-round abilities of Dave Allen. A retired University lecturer he combines all that is creative with a passion and devotion for a club he first began supporting at 11 years-old. Like a long whirling list of talents, Dave is the club’s archivist; has written a number of books including ‘Hampshire County Cricket Club 1946-2006’, ‘Entertain or Perish’ and ‘Images of Sport - Hampshire County Cricket’; writes and edits the annual club handbook; runs a popular blog; is a cricket radio commentator on both ‘Hospital Radio’ and ‘Radio Solent’; organises various cricket displays throughout the summer... Raises money for his projects via car boot sales as he rarely goes cap in hand to the club; regularly updates the Members board with the latest club news while answering questions and sorting out requests from the public; and occasionally helps the coaching staff by giving them stats on players, opponents, previous games and pitch conditions. And, if this isn’t enough, Dave’s recent challenge is to set up ‘The Hampshire CCC Museum’. More importantly, along with all the off-field changes Hampshire have gone through during the last decade, Dave is seen as a stabilising force - a sense of continuity within the club. Allen's book 'Entertain or Perish' was named after the motto of swashbuckling Hants captain Colin Ingleby-MackenzieSo, what is the reason, the emotional payback for all his amazing work? “I love the club - I love everything about it,” he enthused. “My favourite thing is meeting and working alongside the former great county players; recording and representing their stories and achievements. Whether it be having tea with Alan Rayment or sending a birthday present a few years back, signed by former colleagues, to Neil McCorkell as celebration of his 100th birthday. Many of these guys were my heroes and it’s a wonderful thing that many know me well enough now to say hello and chat - and that some have become my friends.”

A fair assessment from Zac on the season just gone via a video interview with Sussex media officer Adam Matthews. A businessman through and through, Zac's honesty is refreshing. Talking about 'off the field activities': "Plenty of opportunities to improve on...", "will always be a challenge... fixtures drive a lot of these" and "we can only be the best we can". Followed by a snappy soundbite describing the impending winter months: "A good busy ahead." www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/sussex-tv-zac-reflects-on-2014-season
