WHERE HAVE ALL THE CRICKET STREAKERS GONE?
__________________________________________________________
While chatting to cricket memorabilia trader Ted Kirwan last Sunday, a particular postcard on his stall caught my eye. A nude
lady streaking past an abashed umpire David Shepherd. He had covered his eyes in horror. New morals conflicting with old.
It was Lords on May 29th, 1989, while England were playing Australia in their 3rd ODI. The streaker was 19 year-old Sheila
Nicholls from Essex. Her escapade made all the more famous by a cartwheel just before she was caught by a policeman.

In those days streaking was equivalent to appearing on a TV reality show. TOWIE for ZOW-IE!, perhaps? She was a singer of a
band called ‘Sheila Nicholls and the Splendid Frock’. Sheila sought publicity and got it. The tabloids had a field day. Those stuffy
chaps of the MCC with their ties and blazers ogling at a naked lady. The contrast was a perfect match. Sheila was interviewed on
TV; the filmed footage appeared on a video aptly named ‘Streaker’, narrated by none other than George Best. A few months later,
her band were touring the US to some critical acclaim.
Yet, few knew that on that infamous day, Derek Pringle, who was fielding at the time, attended the same ‘Felsted School’ as Sheila.

Did you know the first recorded streak occurred on July 5th, 1799 when a man was arrested at Mansion House, London for being
naked. He confirmed he had accepted a wager of 10 guineas (equivalent of around £900 today) to run from Cornhill to Cheapside.

Later, Nicholls moved to Los Angeles and began a solo career. Her first album, Brief Strop gained further critical acclaim, released on
her own record label, ‘Essex Girl Records’. It was distributed by ‘Hollywood Records’ and a song Fallen For You became a hit on college
radio stations and found its way onto the best-selling soundtrack for the movie ‘High Fidelity’. She toured extensively with the album,
including several gigs alongside KD Lang.
In mid-2002, Nicholls released her second album, Wake. The album's first single, Faith, reached the US charts. Nicholls third album, ‘Songs
From the Bardo’ was released in August 2009. Today, she still lives in LA in the district of Echo Park with her husband Alan Minsky, Director
of programming at KPFK radio, and their 7 year old daughter. A self-confessed bi-sexual she continues to be musically active.

(While David Shepherd was abashed one hopes the producer of the original picture, ‘J/V postcards’ is too. They got the wrong date
of the incident written on the back. It was 1989 and not 1988 as printed!)
Finally, the most famous British lady streaker of all time? That's a story for another day...
