It is rather peculiar, is it not, that given all the emphasis, time, energy and expense focussing on the Sussex CCC Academy, where supporters are told by the Hierarchy, "Our players of the future will emerge" that the Club then signs a young seamer from the Surrey CCC Academy. Anyway, welcome aboard Sean Hunt. Perhaps, we should close down the Sussex Academy and focus on signing cricketers from other county Academies. Certainly, a lot cheaper and saves all the disappointment and hassle. Don’t find it peculiar at all s and f. Surely if a good youngster becomes available then we should look to sign them? We can’t compete with household names as we don’t have the money so we should be looking to snap up any good youngsters as we can offer them game time After all this is how we ended up with Luke Wright and Ollie Rob is it not?

It has been awhile since former Sussex old boy, Michael Yardy, has talked about his past mental health issues. At one stage, he was one of the cricketing pioneers to breach and then openly discuss such a taboo subject. Yet, given this week's news about the new service Sussex CCC are offering, an opportunity arises and The Cricketer Magazine has promptly jumped in for a chat. Now the batting coach for Kent, his photo immediately says two things. First, that he looks, not surprisingly perhaps, much older and secondly, that lockdown beard of his makes him look more of an authentic Grizz than Chris Adams. www.thecricketer.com/Topics/banner/michael_yardy_cricket_sussex_kent_mental_health_coach_sports_psychology.html

A superb century from Alex Hales (110 off 56 balls) and what a fantastic BBL tournament Hales is enjoying. Yet, as pressure mounts to return him to the England fold, the differences between Morgan and Hales may only escalate.
Does the Captain stand by his previous decision or is it time to heal the wound? Unfortunately, Hales may not be a person you can trust.

"Cheers! Randy Andy Caddick"
__________________________________________ Life is strange, very strange at times, when life chooses somebody and turns them into an icon years after leaving the public eye. Pop singer, Rick Astley and his song n ever gonna give you up, comes to mind. Initially, the Lancastrian was a one hit wonder back in 1987/88, but today he is a living icon thanks to the internet phenomenon called “Rickrolling” - a form of online meming. Originally started by users on 4chan, by May 2007, the internet practice achieved notoriety, after 13 million people had been tricked into watching Astley's former video via highly persuasive clickbait. Since then his career has gone meteoric and he is more famous today than back in 1988. What has this got to do with cricket? Well, former England and Somerset seamer, Andy Caddick, has become an internet meme version for the Barmy Army aka “Andyrolling”. Their most recent promotion of this living cricket icon is a limited edition series of ‘Randy Caddick IPA Beers' - so limited, in fact, that there are only 228 for sale - to commemorate England’s success in Galle. Under the promotion, “A man so legendary amongst England players & fans he deserves his own beer!” this memorable ale will be sold to raise vital funds for WECare Worldwide in Sri Lanka, a charity that is run by UK vets and nurses and dedicated to providing healthcare to street dogs - a population which makes up 75% of the world's canines. Many many congratulations Mark Robinson. Well deserved. I bumped into Robbo last year, quite by chance, as I walked out of my local Post Office just before the first lockdown. A blink and there he was standing outside on the pavement with his wife. We spoke for a fair few minutes about his life, how he was waiting for the right coaching opportunity, how much he missed being involved with cricket on a day to day basis. You could see he was a coiled tiger aching to use his abundant energy. And here we are 10 months later with the right opportunity at Edgbaston. Patience is a virtue and all that. www.thecricketer.com/Topics/news/warwickshire_appoint_mark_robinson_first_team_coach.html

I recall Andy Caddick coming to the wicket with England’s batting in disarray at not many for 8. As Caddick took guard, I recall saying “I don’t know why he’s bothering to take guard; he won’t last more than three balls”. The person next me piped up saying “he’s actually a very capable batsmen and scored a lot runs in club cricket”. I think I rubbished my neighbour’s comment and continued to be negative about his chances whereupon he revealed he was Andy Caddick’s brother. I kept quieter after that not least because Andy Caddick put up decent resistance. The Caddicks don’t send me Christmas cards.

Good old Grubby has not only ruined our four day team but has done his best to dismantle a very good t20 side as well. What a legacy Those who have been in influential positions at Sussex CCC over the last 10 years or more, what an humiliation it is for them. Imho, a series of bad decisions, general mistakes and, above all, an inability to manage a once successful Club leading to a steady and embarrassing decline. This fall from grace, in my view, started with a stubborn refusal to allow Chris Adams a position in the Club after he had retired. If Chairman David Green, a keen advocate of Chris, who had promised him a management position and why Adams retired early to take on this promised role... If Green had then not had his heart-attack in 2008 and stepped down, allowing Jim May to take over, how different would the history of the last 10 years have been? Some might say Green's ill-health was terrible timing. Life is a series of crossroads offering different future timelines on the decisions made. The film Sliding Doors comes to mind. Adams retired to take on the Surrey job, otherwise he was expected to play for us in 2009. He didn’t retire, not get a job at Sussex, and then get the job at Surrey.

Philh, Have you have ever read 'The Book of Bricks'? Some corkers in that one similar to your story. On the other foot, just after Sussex CCC had spent several million refurbishing the ground (2008?), I was at the ground during a Championship match chatting to a guy sitting next to me, who popped into the conversation after a careful visual inspection of the ground, "It's about time they refurbish this ground. It's looking very tired and shabby!" To which my response, after careful visual inspection of the ground, was "They just have. It cost the club £2 million." You should have seen the guy's face! Re: Andy Caddick. My interest is why has the Barmy Army taken 'Randy Caddick' to heart and turned him into an icon? I did a bit of digging and came across this story. You need to read the whole article to gain a perspective. This may be one reason. Earlier in the day, England fast bowler Andrew Caddick gave a one-fingered salute to the crowd after being no-balled, and for his troubles faces a disciplinary hearing today after being charged under section 1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/theyre-a-disgrace-langer-hits-out-at-barmy-army-taunts-20021228-gdg14k.htmlAm, That is not my memory. Adams had already planned to retire two-thirds through the season, after a run of poor batting performances. His average was the lowest it had ever been at the Club. Simply, he lost confidence. Meanwhile, Chairman David Green had promised him a Club hierarchy job, whenever he decided to retire. Adams gave in his notice. I remember well the ceremony outside the Pavilion after the last home game of 2008, as Adams passed over the Captaincy baton to Mike Yardy. Meanwhile, Green became ill and stood down as Chairman. Richard Barrow (Vice-Chairman) and Jim May put themselves up for the job and, unexpectedly, May was voted in. Adams was then told there was no hierarchy position for him. If Barrow had gained the majority vote, I suspect Adams would have got a Club management job. Understandably, Adams was deeply upset, realised he had retired too soon, but as if manna from heaven, out of the blue, he was offered the Surrey post and gladly grabbed it. Anyway, that is my understanding, after talking to the various involved parties.

Again I reiterate, what is it about snow and cricket? A few flakes and the Twitter cricket feed is besieged by videos of people frolicking in the white stuff. Here is one from Kevin Pietersen at his Surrey home, who has dumped the usual snowballs or tobogganing down a hill on a large tray with a dog chasing you to... Golf! Always one to be different, eh.

If you have some further and closer knowledge on it then fair enough, I thought the final game of 2008 against Yorkshire and the post-match ceremony was about him handing over the captaincy rather than him retiring, I’m sure he wasn’t actually retiring at that point. I agree his form had completely gone that season, only one half-century in the CC.
