Is Cricket Sponsorship in Crisis?
__________________________________________ Charles Sale within his 'Saturday Mail' diary writes a telling comment. "The ECBs hapless commercial department have only themselves to blame for losing Test Match sponsors 'Investec' 5 years into a 10 year deal." It appears the financial services company will take advantage of a break clause halfway through their contract after the two 2017 home Tests against the Windies and South Africa. The deal, which was worth about £40m and saw Investec's brand attached to all home Tests, began in 2011. Some suggest the ECBs decision to choose financial sector rivals, 'NatWest', to be the new England shirt sponsors, was the cause. Either that, or major brand names are losing interest in cricket. This decision occurred because Waitrose quit after discovering the ECB were talking to potential new partners before the supermarket giant have even decided whether to extend their three year contract. Is this ECB incompetence or just bad luck? So who is left? ECB should have Gone to Diplomacy SchoolSpecsavers who have warmed the hearts of the public after their series of witty TV adverts, signed last year a 4 year contract to be the County Championship sponsor. This deal includes full naming and branding rights around the historic competition which enters its 127th season in April. Meanwhile, Specsavers have been the ECB’s official optometry and hearing partner, and principal partner of the Association of Cricket Officials since 2014. The green ellipses feature on clothing worn by umpires officiating in all three county competitions and on clothing worn by ACO-appointed umpires in a range of club and junior cricket competitions nationwide. www.specsavers.co.uk/news-and-information/latest-news/specsavers-title-sponsor-of-county-cricketThe ECB have always prided themselves on attracting major sponsorship names in the past but one feels that success story is now declining. And why, the importance of the CBT in 2020 to attract the BIG names once again, before county cricket ends up being sponsored by pet food companies and garden centres.

I think that for the majority of the non-financial public NatWest is a much bigger name than Investec and I can't help feeling that an " official optometry and hearing partner" offers no advance on quality and perception of product over pet food comnpanies and garden centres. Would you like to run a poll on whether "heartwarming" or "cringe inducing" are the attributes most people would apply to the Specsavers ads? It can be arranged.

The regular club luncheons under the title 'Where Cricket Meets...' welcomes former Welsh, Celtic and Arsenal footballer John Hartson who will give a talk after the meal to celebrate 'St David's Day'. What makes Hartson such a fascinating guest is his miraculous recovery from cancer which initially started in his testicles, led up to his brain, and then spewed around his lungs and body. Very few people have come out alive from such a devastating illness but after chemotherapy and an emergency 'touch and go' operation on his head, he amazingly recovered. One hopes people will have the courage to ask him questions about his experience. The three-course lunch is on Friday 24th February in The Focus Group Boundary Rooms. There is a 12pm arrival for a 1pm sit down. The event includes a charity auction in aid of T he Sussex Cricket Foundation. Spaces can be booked at £50 per person or £450 for a table of 10. purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?agency=SUSSEXCC&organ_val=22918&schedule=list&pid=8366339

I had an absolutely fascinating chat with Tony 'Lester' Pigott today. He never received the full accolades he deserved for being the No.1 person behind bringing down the Sussex Committee on that fateful March evening in 1997 at the Brighton Grand Hotel. Amongst the captivating information he passed on to me... Did you know that when CEO, Chris Adams was his No.2 choice for the Sussex Captaincy? Have a guess who his original No.1 pick was? Shane Warne! He arranged a meeting with Warne in Southampton when Hampshire played the Aussies in a warm-up match during the 1997 home Ashes tour. Warne was very keen on accepting the Sussex captaincy - very keen indeed. But, then CA offered Warne a tempting salary during the Aussie off-season to keep him at home and his enthusiasm waned. Question: Is this one reason why there was ongoing rancour between Warne and Adams during their careers? And how would Sussex have faired under Warne's captaincy rather than Adams? Sliding Doors here we go. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u7akRLnGyk

Mrs P had just left him for another man and he was in a mood to drink the island dry. Which he proceeded to do - with a little help from me, of course...

Bm,
I had always felt Pigott never gained the plaudits he deserved for those two years between 1997 and 1999. He was the driving force behind the immense and amazingly fast changes that took place at Sussex. But, his falling out with Dave Gilbert acted like an eraser on some people's memories. Pigott came out of that feud very badly. Gilbert's nickname 'lizard' says it all and it wasn't until 2014 and the Brett Lee outrage that led to the Aussie's eventual come-uppance and playing out of karma.
Talking to Pigott yesterday and hearing his side of the story, when you read the articles from the Argus and local scribes around that time, you are only gaining Gilbert's distorted version. History needs to be re-written to offer Pigott his own voice.
If there ever was a true Sussex hero it is Tony Pigott where a club pavilion or bar should be named after him.

A poignant tweet from Kevin Pietersen this morning. Poor crowd for Boxing Day Test match. Poor crowd at GABBA for today's ODI. FULL HOUSES at BBL games. Where will cricket be in 5yrs?
Where indeed! Below are the BBL attendance figures to date. The biggest so far was the Melbourne clash on New Year's Day which attracted 71,162 people. Luke Wright scored 45 runs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016–17_Big_Bash_League_season

You might even think that he is Tweeting, not because he has a rational point to make, but because he can't stop himself from opening his mouth. In this of course, he is "not so unique..."

I am having a house winter clear-out and come across some old Cricketer Magazines - approx 54 of them - dating from 1965-1969. All are in excellent condition. They are cheap and cheerful. Anyone interested please contact me via a PM.

I am not a great fan of ITVs 'Midsomer Murders' - particular after John Nettles left. The new Barnaby, Neil Dudgeon, is more wooden and one-dimensional than the 'Wooden Tops' but this week's episode is a must-watch for all cricket fans as the theme is... CRICKET. T20 transforms to C10 - strangely a format which originally comes from Australia - and the local village side are called 'The Panthers' who play in their C10 semi-final a team called 'The Sharks' (Heya) whose shirt colours are similar to Sussex CCC (another 'Heya'). Even more extraordinary is that this 'typical' village side's venue is, perhaps, the best and most picturesque private ground in Britain. Paul Getty's Wormsley CC where the episode's backdrop is set. We see gruesome deaths from a bowling machine and then a stump (seriously) and the eventual exposed murderer is, naturally, a keen cricket fan. The ever present theme, meanwhile, is match-fixing. So, to avoid any more "spoiler-alerts" below is the link to the episode. www.itv.com/hub/midsomer-murders/1a7317a0040
