mod,
Yes I read that story too - spreading like a rash around the cricket Twitter - caused quite a shock. I then suggested ESPNCricinfo 'could' go the same way and Jarrod Kimber, a longterm contributor, then tweeted me disagreeing; but who knows? This is the way forward. At some point, the FREE approach must come to an end if sufficient monies are not being made. A business can't live off air.

Will Macpherson, the young Andy Capp of the cricketing journos, writes an excellent piece about Mark Robinson published in The Guardiantoday. There are some enlightening quotes from 'Robbo' as he talks of the differences between coaching men and women cricketers. Two things instantly struck Robinson about his players. First they lacked street smarts. “They can be very innocent,” he says. “They didn’t understand how to work an umpire, read a pitch or get in a batsman’s ear...."“Generally, with the girls, nothing they ever do is good enough for them. They will beat themselves up more than the average bloke,” he says, before pausing and laughing, “Well, as men it’s never our fault, is it?
"...I was lucky enough to go to Sports Personality of the Year. I found it very humbling how the female athletes spoke about their responsibility to inspire children. I don’t think we see that with male athletes. I certainly never thought like that. As a bloke, when I was 23 I don’t think I ever thought of my responsibility to the greater good of the game."
Well worth reading and nice to know Robinson's favourite word remains 'bloke'. www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/mar/12/mark-robinson-ruthless-england-women-world-cup?CMP=share_btn_twAlso, interesting to note that online publications are finally 'getting it' that a business can't run on air, where advertising revenue continues to diminish as the online business model is flawed. At the bottom, The Guardian are now asking readers to donate money for their cause as the word "paywall" remains a dirty word yet, in my view, is better and more dignified than posing as a charity.

New 'Sussex Cricket' President Appointed __________________________________________John Abbott has been appointed the new President of ‘Sussex Cricket’ after taking over from David Bowden. A worthy successor I first met him last May after writing a gentle but critical piece on the Sussex Cricket Foundation (SCF) and their fundraising activities entitled, “Is Charity Becoming Too Expensive Today?” unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/17528/threadJohn Abbott stands in the centreA week later while attending the annual ‘Disability Day’ at Hove I was introduced to John by the then SCF MD, Tim Shutt, who told me cryptically, “Your blog gets out to a far wider readership than you realise!" But John was fine about the article and even agreed with my constructive criticism. We later discussed various and cheaper potential events for the Charity moving forward. unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/17828/threadFor, John is also Chairman of the 'SCF Fundraising Committee' and one presumes he will carry on in this role. He was often seen at Sussex T20 home matches in front of the Club shop last season holding a bucket for donations and was instrumental in helping raise a large sum of money for the Charity during 2016. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/president-john-abbott-nominated-as-next-president-of-sussex-cricket

The start of the county cricket season at Hove is now so close you can almost smell the linseed on willow and hear the clunk of a cricket ball. And here is a taster of what is to come. The customary handing out of the pride of any new Sussex CCC cricketer - the holy Martlets' cap. Sussex CCC"First full day of pre-season for our squad today and three of our new players were presented their first caps by Jim May and Mark Davis"Laurie Evans, Delray Rawlins and Abidine Sakande
Meanwhile, Rob Andrew is finding his feet and gaining Sussex CCC social practise after giving a talk at Chris Nash's opening Benefit lunch at the Brighton Grand Hotel on Friday. Below, he is with Benefit Chairman, Michael Pay, whom Nash keeps referring to as 'The Legend'. What are we missing, here? Red is the colour

Now... this is an intriguing photograph taken today at the Quebec Barracks Army Reserve Centre located on Dyke Road, Brighton, for the question it inspires. Sussex CCC TwitterWe're down at the Quebec Barracks in Brighton where the boys are taking part in sessions being run by the 3rd Battalion PWRR.
Why are only Tymal Mills, Danny Briggs, Chris Nash, Luke Wells and Laurie Evans attending alongside Sussex CCC Coach, Jason Swift? Why not the whole squad?edit:
Thanks to nemmo's post below, we now know a majority of the Sussex squad attended. Great stuff!Presumably, those overseas have returned for their first day of pre-season yesterday? A bit of strenuous rough and tumble drills and exercises can't do any harm, although Mills may need to be a little careful. Fitness and health as well as some team bonding. What an excellent idea . Perhaps, it was voluntary which is a pity.Btw, 3PWRR is the Prince of Wales Army Reserve Battalion of the Regiment. This Battalion is based across the Southeast of England with the Company located in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. 3PWRR has a proud record of achievements that include recent operational experience in Afghanistan and Iraq in support of the Regular Army and Cyprus supporting the United Nations mission. www.army.mod.uk/infantry/regiments/24855.aspx

Fluffy, is there any news re the appointment Jim May's successor? There is nothing specific in the AGM agenda, so I'm not sure how the club elects its chairman. So long as there's no plan to deplete the museum staff . . .

Fb, I have asked various people 'in the know' but the hierarchy are tight-lipped. I believe there are three candidates who have put their names forward. Who they are is merely conjecture but my guess is: Bob Warren, Jon Filby and one other. My pick would have been Richard Barrow but he's not interested. A shame really because he has 24 years experience on the Board and at a time when there's so much uncertainty and change off-the-field, you need a stable, experienced and steady hand at the tiller while the dust flies around. 1: Bob Warren 2: Jon Filby
3:? Perhaps, the Mod can create a poll? Richard Barrow was Vice-Chairman to David Green but after Green's sudden ill-health in 2008, Barrow felt he had a strong chance to take over but was pipped to the post by Jim May. My point being: Just because you are the Vice-Chairman, as Warren presently is, it doesn't automatically mean you gain the top job. Jim May steps down on March 28th and there is a brief void until the new Chairman is elected a week later. Naturally, Members and supporters have no say in the matter as the decision is made only by the Board; which, in my mind, is completely wrong. Members should have the vote and not just 12 people from the hierarchy. Members elect those to the Sussex CCC Board but not the increasingly important role of Chairman!?

I had a few spare minutes so been carrying out some research on our potential Chairmen. Bob WarrenHe was appointed Vice-Chairman in May 2015, taking over from Jon Filby. Already, he is Chairman of the Sussex CCC Museum and the Sussex Cricket Premier League and runs and owns a Worthing-based travel company called Travel Places. Warren is not young - around 70 years-old - but still has vitality and ambition. His Linkedin page is impressive. Jon Filby A previous Vice-Chairman and brought in to the hierarchy fold by Jim May, he stepped down from the role in 2015 to become Sussex Cricket Integration Project Manager for 9 months helping Zac Toumazi form 'Sussex Cricket Ltd'. Jon has played an important role in developing the Sussex CCC Museum where he is its Secretary. Filby's Museum successes include the 'Robin Marlar Cricket Memorabilia Auction' and helping create the Club '175 Anniversary Book' and while he was formerly an organisational and management consultant and a previous ‘Head of People Development’ at London Underground, Jon lacks the commercial experience and overall success of Warren. But Filby is relatively young (late 50s) and is able to offer his full-time to the Chairmanship as he has stepped down from civvy street. Ed PutnamBut the left-field and exciting choice might be Ed Putnam who, imho, would make a brilliant appointment. Successfully self- employed, he is a qualified accountant who runs his own consultancy providing 'Finance Director Services' to businesses around the country. Ed is the Sussex CCC Hon. Treasurer and took over from Simon Crundwell in July 2014. He is also Treasurer for the Sussex Cricket Foundation and Sussex Cricket Ltd. Problem-being, does he have time to take on the Chairmanship? I can see Ed as one for the future but not sure whether the timing is right? But you never know. He and Rob Andrew would make a formidable team. Meanwhile, present form suggests Bob Warren as the favourite for becoming the next Sussex CCC Chairman.

nemmo, Thanks for that. I suspected as such. What a pretty picture it makes. I will now edit my post. 19 players and 5 coaches involved. So, the competition: which Sussex players aren't there? I will answer: No Ajmal Shahzad or Ed Joyce (no surprise) and can anyone spot a South African? Perhaps, they haven't joined up yet with the squad?

Perhaps, they haven't joined up yet with the squad?Philander was playing in the First Test against New Zealand two days ago, and will presumably be in the squad for the rest of the series, finishing at the end of March. Meanwhile Wiese was playing domestic cricket for Titans v Knights on Sunday, and even if he doesn't get called up as a reserve to IPL, will stay in South Africa for the rest of their season, which potentially runs until April 9th, the final of the Sunfoil Cup. That leaves Van Zyl, who played regularly for Cape Cobras this winter and again may stay with them for the Sunfoil Cup.

Hhs,
Thanks for your excellent research.
To answer why Ajmal Shahzad wasn't at the barracks today he tweeted on February 21st.
Ajmal Shahzad
Gutted I can't be at Lord's tonight celebrating having represented my country. Family comes first. Hope everyone is having a ball! #650
Could there be family difficulties? Perhaps, a parent with ill-health?

Today, the hallowed turf at the Hove County Ground awoke to the first impressions of cricket trainers; implanted poles of cricket nets; and the sound of ball on willow. What a wonderful time of the year! So much hope and promise. So much optimism. So many dreams. And even better, what a glorious day for Hove to awaken. Even better Theweatheroutlook.com long range forecast predicts a glorious summer with sun and sizzling temperatures. Oh yeah!! So, with a Sussex CCC Captain injury-free; three South Africans bringing backbone and a winning mentality to the side; youngsters that are one year more experienced; a Head Coach with improved judgement; a full-time batting Coach... Come on, this will be a season to remember as Sussex fight for promotion and two OD Trophies. As any professional optimist would say. "This is going to be OUR year!" www.theweatheroutlook.com/twoforecasts/daily-ultra-long-range.aspx?region=1&page=5
