Confirmation today on cricinfo Jayawardene switches to Blast after IPL snub of the rumoured engagement of the former Sri Lankan captain to play T20 for Sussex from May 15 to May 19. He has a subsequent engagement in the Caribbean Premier League. Mark Robinson's comments on this are eloquent of the problems EWnglish cricket has imposed on itself by adpting an appointment to view over so many soggy Friday nights:" We were watching players who didn't get bid for in the IPL auction but trying to pick someone up is very very difficult with our competition played our such a long period," Mark Robinson, Sussex managing director of cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. "We have the IPL at the start of our summer and the CPL at the end of the Blast." Well done to Robinson for picking up such a valuable and experienced player. Let's hope that experience may rub off on his colleagues, that the skill will shine through - and that the Australia player Sussex are rumoured to have engaged to follow him has similar qualities.

Once George Bailey is confirmed, we begin to look like a very tasty T20 side, capable of putting the mediocrity of the last couple of seasons behind us:-
Wright Jayawardene Bailey Nash Machan/Cachopa Yardy Brown/Prior Jordan (Piolet or Liddle when CJ's on England duty) Shahzad Zaidi/Beer Mills

I'd still like the look of the side better if Joyce were there

Smashing, what a signing. Have we come into some cash this preseason? The last few years have all been about tight budgets then Mills, Shahzad and Mehela turn up - bit odd. Our squad looks exciting, and if CJ and Prior are about even more so. I can only assume that Robbo's directive this season is to win something.

Adam Matthews interviews Mahela Jayawardene. Interesting that Chris Adams' successful stint with Sri Lanka last year was a prompt for him to join Sussex. Unfortunately, his first knock for the club yesterday against a Sussex League XI which the Sharks won by 6 wickets was not a fruitful one for Mahela. Shahzad once more starred with the ball taking 4 for 36 and Chris Nash hit a much needed 43. Intriguingly, Jake Lehmann, son of Australian coach Darren Lehmann, top-scored for the League XI with 46. Given his Dad is already a patron of the museum, could Darren become a future Sussex coach? www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/sussex-tv-mahelas-first-interview-as-a-sussex-sharks-player

Bet that wouldn't have been cheap for them.

Bet that wouldn't have been cheap for them. Personally didn't think he was that great in the blast before.

Bet that wouldn't have been cheap for them. Personally didn't think he was that great in the blast before. Nor did I. He turns 40 at the end of this month and I can't remember when he last got a decent score. Undoubtedly one of the greats of the game but there's only so long you can keep going on reputation alone.
