Although he, like everyone else, has suffered at the hands of Carberry and co, it was good to see that the Sussex Academy Plus bowler, Stuart Whittingham, took the first wicket of the season by removing Jimmy Adams at Southampton.

Good declaration by Joyce. Once Brown was out, far more important to give the bowlers a run-out with the ball rather than the bat - especially if hh is right and weather is going to be poor over the next couple of days. (Mind you, his forecasting skills were so bad last season that if he said 'won't be any play today' I made sure I was there for a prompt start and when he said 'see you there' I knew it was time to stay home...have you been on a meteorology course over the winter, hh ? )

Well done the students, who have just 24 f/c appearances between the 11 of them.
Wasn't there today, but they seem to have bowled with some control and although four Sussex batsmen got in , they were good enough to prevent anyone going on to a really big score.
And then to negotiate what must have been 14 very tricky overs from a top-class pace attack without losing a wkt was some achievement.
Satisfying day for them, I think...

I've just realised that the 24 appearances include today's match, so prior to this fixture they had 13 f/c appearances between them and seven of them were making their f/c debut today, including Joe Root's little brother Billy, who is next man in and can clearly bat a bit - he hit a double century for Suffolk v Bucks in the minor counties championship last season.

You and I have played countless times well within May with fingers blue from the cold, thinking about the attractions of home and loved ones, or indeed of a pint in a friendly local. This what the forecast I use most frequently predicts for Hove in the next few days: www.worldweatheronline.com/Hove-weather/East-Sussex/GB.aspxMy guess from that is a maybe for tomorrow morning, although bloody cold, followed by a dismal afternoon, an iffy Saturday morning and a possible bit of play when everyone has lost interest. That sounds like a perfect April forecast, in Sussex.

That sounds like a perfect April forecast, in Sussex. Given your forecasting record, hh, I take that to mean no chance before lunch tomorrow, followed by a glorious afternoon. Prompt start in fine weather on Sat before the ground disappears in a flood of Ambridge-style proportions! You've almost persuaded me not to go, but I'm impatient to see Shahzad and Mills. Two years ago I saw Jordan take a five-for on his Sussex debut v one of the MCCU teams (think it was Loughborough?). Would love to see Ajmal or Tymal ( are they going to become known as Aj and Ty?) do the same...

Have fun, borderman, and please let me know how it worked out, both meteorologically and metaphysically, especially the latter! Hope we can meet in the next couple of weeks - friendly, Southampton, or finally v Worcester. Hope you have an enjoyable Easter holiday and love to all the Border-folk.

Sunday and Monday look better and there is now a very good forecast in Mid-Sussex at least for next week. The news that Pietersen won't be playing in the friendly may tempt me away from my allotment, though it is always a tough choice between planting broad beans and peas on the one hand, and enjoying south London schadenfreude on the other.

Good figures from Mags and Aj - but nothing on Jack Shantry. If you take 10-26 in the first match of the season, you are probably going to stay in the top twenty of the bowling averages until the end of the season, even if you bowl like a drain for the next six months.
I think everyone expects Worcs to be relegated. But if they can hang on in there until Ajmal arrives, I reckon they will have a very good chance of staying up, based on a team of average players with a top atttiude - which is often a better combination than top players with an average attitude. Nobody ever talks about Steve Rhodes as a England coach, but I'd rate him only behind Robinson among the top English coaches around the 18 counties.

I do not believe they have a team to compete.

I think our starting eleven for this game was spot on for this time of year and should be the way we go through April, including the order. Four proper quicks is spot on now, even if you have a half decent spinner, so this is the team for me. We have plenty in reserve if anyone underperforms like Hatch, H-P, Beer, Zaidi, Machan, Finch and Jackson to name, that many.
We're strong, big expectations expected. And if Prior the 50/50 man comes good - well...
