Pietersen has said that he hopes to make his debut in the Championship match on April 19th, but there are plenty of talented players in the Surrey squad and it would be nice to see some of them included for this game: Roy, Ansari, Dunn have all been included in A and Development squads this winter and there will be other promising youngsters who may get a chance to stretch their muscles. Despite the washout of most of the MCCU match Sussex should look at including players such as Finch, Zaidi and Hatchett.

From the Surrey (no spelling mistake ) website:
The Surry squad to play Sussex at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground on Tuesday 7th April and Wednesday 8th April : Gareth Batty (capt) Zafar Ansari David Balcombe James Burke Rory Burns Steven Davies Dan Douthwaite Ben Foakes Aneesh Kapil Jason Roy Vikram Solanki Gary Wilson
On Edit: I've just researched some of the names not familiar to me: James Burke is a 24 year old all-rounder formerly with Devon and Somerset Seconds; Aneesh Kapil played against Sussex for Worcestershire at Horsham in 2011, and then moved to Surrey. Last year he scored a century against Sussex IIs at Purley, and then made another one for the first-class side against New Zealand A; Dan Douthwaite has regularly played age-group cricket for Surrey and last year turned out for Sutton in the Surrey Premier League, usually batting 8 or 9 and bowling 2nd change or later.

No news yet on the Sussex squad but I imagine a similar mixture of established players and opportunities for the likes of Finch, Jackson and perhaps Hudson-Prentice, if he is over his injury. Forecast is good, if about 5 degrees cooler at Hove than just over the Downs in Mid-Sussex.

First impressions: Tymal Mills is the quickest thing seen at Hove since the exit of the old committee in 1997. Not always on target and the gentleman sitting in front of me was right to harrumph that he would be called for wides every delivery in a one day match. But every ball he bowled offered some opportunity:a wild mow, a toe end ramp for 6, a possible decapitation suitable for Wolf Hall. Life will not be dull.

A glorious sunny day at Hove with around 250 people in attendance and it felt good, really good to be back at the county ground on Day 1 of the friendly match against Surrey. A nod or a chat to colleagues - a chance to brush away the social winter cobwebs. Although disaster struck as there was no Harveys in sight! Meanwhile, The new verdant outfield glistened with a sheen of 'look at me' and with barely a seagull in sight to dampen the cat-walk. It is hard to believe that 7 months have passed since the final home championship match against Lancashire and that win by 7 wickets to help propel Sussex towards their closing 3rd position. hhs is spot on with Tymal Mills. Frightening and fast, there are shades of John Snow in his fiery delivery. Tymal just needs to find his gunsights - too wayward with far too much down the legside, but wow, what promise lies ahead with Robinson's guile and experience to draw from. Surrey limped to 151-7 after their allotted 60 overs. Certainly, this wasn't the World Cup, more like a tortoise tea party in comparison, but who cared. The sound of ball on willow being the all important purpose. And while Mills terrified the Surrey youngsters, Magoffin was straight back to his metronome efficiency with Shahzad offering excellent support. After tea, Nash and Wells raced to 50 in no time as Sussex headed towards their 30 overs before close. Tomorrow Sussex will begin the day with an additional 30 overs before retiring and the match begins again. All is fair and well in England's green & pleasant Land. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S-AOFgb59Aedit: CLOSE OF PLAY at Hove and Sussex end the day on 137 for 1, with Luke Wells unbeaten on 65 and Nash scoring 56 before being caught at mid-on by Davies off Ansari. Play resumes at 11am tomorrow.

Is there an attempt to gloss over a withdrawal of Harveys, by pulling the intended announcement? Jim or Jon - can you allay the ale drinkers' fears, please?

I hope so, but I can also confirm that the out-of-bounds areas that were the subject of a recent message include the whole of the Sharks stand, the top tier of the pavilion, and the north-east corner grass banking.

Glad that hh and s&f had a good day and was truly sorry I couldn't join them; grandchildren still staying with us for extended Easter hol and took them to the zoo farm at Godstone today in the April sunshine.
I am disturbed by the ominous absence of Harvey's. If the link with what has been Sussex's premier local beer for 200 years really has been broken and some horrible corporate p*i*s*s-water is to be offered in its place, then I shall be bringing my own beverages (at least to those matches at which we are allowed to do so...)
Was hoping to go tomorrow but if the mighty BB King, currently in a Las Vegas hospital at 89 years old, doesn't pull through, I'm going to be otherwise engaged on both radio and print duties.
Meanwhile, I shall console myself with the magnificent photo of Ajmal in action at Hove today on the Sussex twitter page. Kyle Hogg has responded to it with a one word tweet saying 'teckers' - which applies equally to the bowlers' textbook action and to the quality of the photography.
Check it out at /photo/1.

A fine picture and I can confirm that he bowled up to the standard of that action. Overall the Sussex bowling was much too strong and in command of the Surrey batting. Burns stuck around stodgily for more than 2 hours without impressing, Ansari and Solanki were no more than adequate, and Davies and Roy underwhelmed. The bowling does look very promising indeed. Magoffin as usual bowled with the ball on the end of a long piece of elastic, controlling precisely where he wanted to lead the batsman, and Shahzad only bowled one poor ball, a longhop, in the spell that I saw. Whatever his reputation in the recent past he seems determined to show why he became an England player, briefly, at Yorkshire. Hobden bowled well too, though his pace that seemed to be something special last year looked a bit more manageable, particularly compared with Mills. Even Zaidi got a wicket, the usual clueless cowshot. Hope to go again this afternoon though it had better warm up a bit. Staggering that a few miles inland it was a basking 17-18 degrees and yet pullovers required throughout the afternoon. A few brave souls wore shorts and short-sleeved shirts, determined to wring all heat from the sun down to bathe their goosepimpled, purpling flesh: not a pretty sight.

Just to let you know that, through my rose tinted spectacles, I am 100% confident of good news when the ale announcement comes!

Warmer here today and Sussex 170-2 with 20 overs to bat in first innings and Wright batting. Almost perfect - pint of Harveys wpuld round it off.

Strange that Surrey showed such lack of ambition throughout this game, and that it ended in a meaningless session where Sussex had outscored them in combined 60-over and 30-over spells without starting their own 30-over stint. It removed any element of competition which should be present, even in a friendly. But perhaps Surrey don't feel like offering any competition this season. That certainly came across through the repetitive block-5-and-then-have-ago-at-one overs that Burns and Ansari played in both innings, and their bowling was even less demanding. Thank goodness Luke Wright quickly adjusted into his best bully mode and Ben Brown played the first (and later a second) of his usual promising early-season innings. A pity for such a beautiful day, and also when Robinson was inclined to be experimental, using both triallists in the second innings. Ollie Robinson certainly offered at least one an over to be plundered and his pace was undistinguished, but Nick Harrison was a revelation - much faster than his cricinfo profile suggests ( www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/410383.html) and much more disciplined. He deservedly got one wicket and might be worth persevering with, especially as Hatchett has joined Anyon on the injury list. On the evidence that they presented here, Surrey have little motivation to get back into the first division, and the addition of major stars to their dressing room won't change that; indeed it will probably create an atmosphere of resentment.

Robinson is well-connected - his step-father is Paul Farbrace. He's already had a trial at Essex this season and now one at Sussex! hh, I doubt that too much can be divined about Surrey's desire to get promotion from a two day net session at Hove, from which several of their big players (KP, Sangakarra, Dernbach, Meaker) and their leading young wicket-taker of 2014, Matt Dunn, seem to have been missing. I can assure you there will be no lack of motivation with Graham Ford in charge. From his time at Kent I'd rate him one of the most driven and intense coaches I've ever come across. He talks about Surrey's coming season here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=q01JXToPw7YPatronising preview of Sussex's prospects, by the way, on cricinfo ("A mix of great victories and bad defeats is the likely outcome, but there are few more charming places to watch county cricket than Hove and that should keep most of the spectators reasonably content") . I read it and immediately assumed it was by the dodgy tabloid chap, but surprisingly it's by Hopps . Read it here: www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2015/content/story/858863.html
