So the maligned journalist not so far off the mark. No doubt apologies will be posted in due course. If he provides a spinning master class on 10th April on a green wicket, Will Beer should feel encouraged. As the match is in Northampton at least the Brighton bouncers can put their brollies to one side for the time being. Nothing to apologise for . Still a speculative endeavour, full of ifs, althoughs, and "hope his insight will be valuable" - he isn't even going to be fit to bowl. www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2016/content/story/980293.html

Has he been offered a contract by Northants? No. Will he be offered a contract? Only, it seems, if he will agree to play for a salary of £15k which is less than Sussex are paying Salt and Garton. Has the ECB agreed to supplement his salary (which was the most newsworthy 'revelation' in Dobell's original and speculative 'story')? No, they have declined to do so. "Not far off the mark"? I'd say unsubstantiated tittle-tattle that was several miles from the truth, wouldn't you? The month that Dobell recently took off from cricinfo to ghost Trott's book - which I think we all know will rival Prior's autobiography in its ghasstly self-promotion and lack of awareness - was a welcome relief and almost made the site readable again. Ask almost anyone in the upper echelons of English cricket (apart from Trott who is not going to criticise his most fawning cheer leader), and they will tell you that this bloke is even dodgier than the hated Paul Newman on the Daily Mail.

"Panesar... has been formally included in Northamptonshire's squad for the new county season....has secured independent financial support in order to play for the county where he began his career."
There is even a suggestion in the Northants forum section of another messageboard, that Monty is funding his own wages. It still seems a long way short of a clear statement that "Northants has resigned Panesar and looks forward to seeing hin play regularly this year.£ I hope that it will get to that point, because Monty is a very good spinner, because Northants need him, and because the media have been instrumental in pulling him apart when he most needed support.

So the Doberman called it - in a roundabout kind of way. Called it though, Panesar at Northants, he said. I know BM will apologise willfully but I dunno about HH - he's very stubborn.

Heard Monty speak about his mental difficulties and that he has accepted he needs medication for paranoia, I thought he came over very well and I hope he is on the way to recovery and can recapture his form.

Smart recruitment by the Aussies. But given that Morgan couldn't trust Ali and Rashid to bowl more than half their overs on Sunday, wouldn't Monty be better employed coaching England's spinners ? Perhaps Bayliss is frightened that he might piss on them from a great height (although some might argue the effect could only be beneficial...)
Swann and Panesar, England's only two decent spinners this century, both now working in Australia - Swann as a Big Bash commentator and Monty as part of the CA coaching team.
Personally, I'd like to see Andrew Strauss negotiate an exchange of hostages. Can we have Monty back and trade Bayliss in return?

A fascinating and quite emotional interview here www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/jan/22/monty-panesar-england-coaching-australia-cricket from Will Macpherson. The guy so desperately wants to play again, has so much still to give, and so clearly is unwell. We can't undo the past and we can't say what might have happened if he had been properly diagnosed and treated, but he definitely deserves the sympathetic and understanding approach shown here by Macpherson. Perhaps his future will lie in coaching, where the relationships can be more carefully constructed? England could certainly use his skills, and so could Sussex. Maybe he could set up a consultancy approach - send for Monty's spin clinic?
