Lyth Yorkshire Lees Yorkshire Root Yorkshire Ballance Derbyshire Gale Yorkshire Bairstow Yorkshire Rashid Yorkshire Bresnan Yorkshire Plunkett Durham Sidebottom Yorkshire Brooks Northants Is it helped by being the largest county in England , with two major city areas, a long history of cricket, a test match ground, two professional leagues? Or is it a model that Cornwall can replicate?

Or Sussex? I thought the marvellous cricket infrastructure in Sussex was the envy of other counties?

It seems we have some good youngsters coming through but we have to make sure their progress isn't blocked. It's been difficult for management as perhaps some of the current contracted youngsters have not progressed as quickly as we would have liked. To remain competitive while we wait for them to come through, we've had to look outside the county for reinforcements. When we were supplementing our home grown with likes of Joyce and Panesar, recognised quality, I thought we had the balance about right. Some of the recent additions though were not of that calibre and the side has struggled to bridge that gap. I don't know whether it's down to budget constraints but we have not been able to attract the type of players we once did. Jordan was a wonderful find, and credit to the management for spotting his potential, but we really need to recruit a couple of players of real quality, and then play the youngsters around them. I'd like to see us make real progress on getting the average age of the squad down. Two year contracts last year for some of the older players, has left us with little room to manoeuvre. Not sure how much we will be able to do this winter but we really need to have more of a focus on succession. As has been said, Yorkshire is a big county with a large catchment area. They also operate with a considerably bigger squad than us, nearly thirty strong compared to our 21. A smaller squad need not be a problem for us, certainly if more players could play in all formats. If we have to reduce the squad to say, twenty, but are able to add a couple of quality players who play all forms, then we should have enough talent to bring the younger ones through.

You can add to the list Patterson, Leaning,Pyrah, Ashraf, Rafiq, Tattersall, Rhodes and Hodgson who are also all home grown. However the team waiting the longest since it last actually won anything is? Yorkshire!

I think Wally makes a good point, well several.
We have a decent amount of homies in our squad but the management don't yet trust most the younger ones. What annoys me, is when we supplement our squad with ageing journeymen or unproven 'English qualified' players to fill the voids instead of doing what Yorks probably do. You'll always need players from outside the county, but just the good or potentially good ones please - no past it old men, what's the point? And we've done it again by bringing in Tredwell.
Despite my rep, I wouldn't particularly wanna see all eleven players from Sussex, or even ten and the OS. It's not realistic, and players like Joyce and Wright are much needed. Even Yorks will bring in a bit of Ballance.
Hiyyyaaaaawwwww! Somebody put me out!

Tredwell seems a better fit than Zaidi at the moment

Tredwell is 32 - personally rather depressing for me that is defined as a past it old man

and maybe a change of county might be just what he needs.

Conversely, although I'm of the opinion we need to bring down the average age of our squad, and four thirty plus seamers is not good planning, the spin department is where we should benefit from a twirler who's been around a while. Other than bringing in an overseas spinner, Tredwell probably represents the best of the English qualified options. The problem is, we already have Zaidi signed to a two year contract. I'm less concerned about the effect it might have on Will Beer's career, as he's got time on his side. There are plenty of examples of young spinners at counties who didn't break through until their late 20's. I think Will is smart enough to realise that he isn't going to be much better off at another county. Having said that, we do have to make a conscious effort to fast track some of the younger players, if only to address the ageing squad issue. With so many players having turned thirty, it could present a problem in the near future as they probably aren't going to get any better.

The big problem is the budget for a small non test county....I believe our gross revenue is about 25% that of surrey.
This distinctly handicaps the signing of players where we can not afford established players where there is competition.

Given a straight choice between Tredwell and Zaidi I would rather have Tredwell but Zaidi is already signed up on a two year contracts probably ruling out the chance of signing Tredwell until 2015 at least.
With Lewis, Magoffin, Anyon and Zaidi all in their thirties where is the succession planning? Will we see much of Jordan next season?
Jonboy - Yorkshire have 25 players not 30 and this includes two overseas players. Sussex have 22 (or 23 if you include Tredwell). Only three more and five of theirs are on Junior Pro contracts.
Leedsgull - I was just looking at your starting XI. Besides the further eight you mention there is Coad and Wainman. I'm sure if Hooper and Hudson-Prentice were at Yorkshire they would be offered Junior Pro contracts for next season. However, at Sussex Academy Plus contracts are probably the best they can hope for espcially with Zaidi and Liddle having been offered two year contracts.
Signings do need to be made from outside but they have to be of the right quality. Joyce and Magoffin yes. Liddle and Zaidi no.
