Thanks, Joe. Your arithmetic is better than mine and hhs (we both went to the same school, which may explain.) But to my mind the one year extension would have been better left on the table until August when Sussex could see how many runs Cachoppers delivers in his third season.
His record - first season of making fifities but not converting them followed by a train-wreck of a second season - suggests he is the sort of player who might benefit from the advice of an experienced batting coach. You know, the one Sussex advertised for before Xmas but has still not been unveiled.
For me Cachopa on recent form doesn't even get in a red ball batting line up which goes:
Wells Nash Machan Taylor Joyce Wright Brown

For all those doubting the wicket-keeping abilities of Cachopa, he took six catches behind the wicket today for Auckland v Wellington in the Plunket Shield.
Except that it wasn't Craig with the gloves on but his older brother Brad!

Perhaps even more mortifying is that Scott Borthwick, who replaced Craig as Wellington's overseas batsman, had a very successful second half of the season in the first-class Plunket Shield, scoring 488 runs at 54.22, including 2 centuries.

There have been some very good things about the performances of both the firsts and the seconds. This does not include the form of both the wicket-keeping captains which has been hopeless and surely undermines their credibility especially when they are in charge of others in much better form. Poor Craig can't buy a run with a sackful of Green Shield Stamps.

It does seem stupid to burden a player who is trying to rediscover some batting form with both captaincy and wicket keeping duties. Surely he would be better off with out the captaincy at the very least?

No sooner did we post about the unreleased signing of Delray Rawlins unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/21515/thread than this Tweet comes through PLAYER NEWS: @craigcachopa has come to an agreement with Sussex for the early release from his contract, due to personal reasons #GOSBTS Sorry to hear it, but it seemed to be inevitable after two domestic and one overseas season of disappointing performances. Good luck CC and hope you find that spark again. I will always remember that first innings against Warwickshire at Horsham and how refreshingly dashing your strokes were then. On edit: Those reasons seem to be that he thinks he has a better chance, after all, of representing New Zealand than England, and he needs to find some form first. At least, I think that is what this is getting at: www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/player-news-craig-cachopa-agrees-early-release-from-contract-due-to-personal-reasons

Desperately sorry for Craig Cachopa. When I first met and spoke to him at the Players Award Dinner after his brilliant start for Sussex, I was very impressed. Mature beyond his years; a potential future Sussex Captain. What the hell happened? I was at Horsham and that match too.
"Personal reasons" may well be true and while it is not good to speculate, perhaps, like a growing number of cricketers these days, there may be some emotional/mental health issue at the bottom of it?

We now only have one wicketkeeper having released Callum Jackson last year due to lack of finances to carry three keepers. How about re-signing Jackson who in my opinion should never have been released in the first place? The alternative is to promote the Academy keeper Joe Billings and he is still at Bedes for another year.

"Personal reasons" may well be true and while it is not good to speculate, perhaps, like a growing number of cricketers these days, there may be some emotional/mental health issue at the bottom of it. That's not how I read the statement and for Cachopa's sake I hope you are wrong about there being darker implications. As the 2016 season went on it became increasingly evident to everyone - perhaps even to the player himself- that Sussex had made a bad call when they extended his contract six months ago. I'd suggest that the headline: "Craig Cachopa agrees early release" and phrases such as "Craig Cachopa has come to an agreement with the club" are intended to imply that the club approached him and said 'this isn't working is it, mate?" - and in return for some financial recompense (hopefully not paying him off with a full year's salary), he agreed to go. 'Personal reasons' is very often HR speak when there is a brokered agreement not to use the 'sacked' word. Wonder when we will get the Joyce retirement announcement....

Steve Hollis is in the same camp: Stephen Hollis stevehollis75 19m19 minutes ago No surprise that Craig Cachopa is leaving @sussexccc with a year left on his contract. Was a crazy decision to extend his deal last winter

Was a crazy decision to extend his deal last winter Hollis is in danger of losing his tea and cake. In the last few days he has accused the club of a "botched" job over the batting coach and now he's criticised one of Davis's first decisions about the playing squad as "crazy". Careful, Steve. You-know-who will be after you ! on edit: or was it Adrian Harms who said the Goodwin appointment was "botched"? No tea and cake for anyone at Hove next season, it seems!
