Last week they sent Groenwald packing. Yesterday they announced three players were retiring mid-season.
A club and dressing room clearly in some kind of meltdown (their body language was awful when I saw them lose by ten wkts to Kent last week). But then what? The handful of players left bounced back last night to win for only the second time this season in 17 matches by brilliantly chasing down 190 to defeat a good Warwicks side.
Was it a case of weeding out the bad apples and rotten eggs which has allowed the rest of the farmyard to thrive (how's that for multi-mixed metaphor?) Or simply a case of extreme adversity creating a tightly cohesive spirit in what must now be the smallest squad in county cricket?
A fascinating case for the sports psychologists....

Two have left with stress related illness, one has left because he refused to sign a new contract and the other to puruse business interests outside cricket.

Two have left with stress related illness, one has left because he refused to sign a new contract and the other to puruse business interests outside cricket. All a bit like politicians resigning to spend more time with their families! Add the sacking of Dan Redfern and the tragic accident that ruled Poynton out for the season, and you would appear to have a very troubled dressing room, the result of which is that in the space of a week Derbyshire have lost their highest wicket taker (Groenwald) and their highest run scorer (Moore). Moore is a particularly strange one. After playing for Sussex seconds a bit way back, his career went hay-wire in recent years and I think he was registered for three different counties in the last five seasons. Whatever the reasons, Derbyshire are clearly shocked by his decision to walk out. Didn't Derbys also do something strange with their coaching staff in the winter - sacked Krikken who got them promoted, appointed Welch , who'd had his nose put out of joint at Warwicks, and made the rest of the coaching staff reapply for their existing jobs?

One has tremendous sympathy for Chairman Chris Grant, whom after a series of hierarchy power struggles, brought his ambitious vision to a club lying in the county doldrums for ten years; dragged them kicking and screaming into division 1 to the shock of many, in particular their own supporters, who like the old Sussex, had accepted a full-time division 2 fate and then it's all gone wrong on the pitch since being unable to hold on to the resonance of division 1 status. Some suggest Grant had pushed too hard and too quickly. His personal ambition far outweighing that of the club. Certainly, there is present unrest in the camp. A local paper 'The Derby Telegraph' has strongly criticised Grant for his handling of Groenewald which has only added to the present club turmoil. And should Grant have sacked Krikken, where he acted more like a Premiership Chairman? www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/Cricket-Tim-Groenewald-leaves-Derbyshire-says/story-21270326-detail/story.htmltwitter.com/DCCCChair

Rumours that Madsen will be the next to go. He's denying it - a little too strenously.
It was obvious when I saw them play last week that they were not a happy bunch of players.
Palladino has turned into an excellent bowler. If he's another who is unsettled (and who wouldn't be having to play at something called the 3aaa County Ground?), he'd be a good recruit at the Brightonandhovejobs.com County Ground.

And what to make of this rather heartwarming story on cricinfo? Fresh purpose invigorates PoyntonIs this spin to distract attention from the troubles detailed in this thread, or is there another narrative, about the very narrow boundaries between success and failure nowadays is cricket, and about how local clubs try to manage their relationships? I tend to think the former, particularly because the chosen journalist is not one of the regulars who follows the English county scene, but I'd love to be convinced of the latter.

And apologies for the time lag between your post and mine, just browsing through the threads waiting for dinner to be cooked.

That's the trouble with staff Mrs Doyle, they can be a little slow getting the meals ready these days.
I've had to sack my whole staff recently, the soufflé was dreadful!
Oh for Carson!
