Test Match Special @bbctms 2m2 minutes ago England narrow squad down to 12 with @jakeball & @finnysteve released. @adilrashid03 remains in 12 #bbccricket Obviously the selectors - or whoever - decided that the one sort of bowling the Pakistanis couldn't cope with was fast and straight, and clearly it was the bowling that was to blame when England failed to score enough runs. To be fair, these two have been replaced with Anderson and Stokes, so I reckon the seam bowling has been strengthened. The batting weaknesses have still to be addressed, although I think Stokes will bolster the batting. Well my point was really that the seam bowling didn't need a great deal of strengthening, and though Anderson is clearly a superior bowler to Ball and should be picked when fully fit, those changes didn't really address some of the weaknesses at Lord's. Stokes the bowler is not superior to Finn, though he can be capable of inspired spells, but with much less frequency than when his batting comes off.

I agree that Stokes is not inherently superior to Finn, but Finn seems to have lost his mojo and seems to be finding it difficult to regain his old rhythm and confidence.

Hales departs, swishes, snicks, gone. Next cab off the rank?

Bowl 'em out tomorrow for 50.
Who would have thought Sri Lanka could win a test match against anyone on this summer's evidence? Two up against the Convicts. Ha-ha-ha.

I weren't far off. England showing how to bowl a side out on the last day on a flatty - reverse swing. Great performance all round from the mighty England.

The real value of what Bayliss and Farbrace have achieved with this squad was all contained in yesterday's performance, and in the series as a whole. Despite having three sub-par Test batsmen in the top order England score at such a rate that what would have been a calamitous position a couple of years ago, 110-5 mid-afternoon, can be converted into a potentially match-winning 300+ by the close and with the bonus of an opposition wicket. Can any other side in the world reckon on doing the same thing repeatedly? It helps England give extended trials to the likes of Hales, Vince and Ballance, in the knowledge that failure of one or two, even three will not necessarily cost the match. The confidence level of this team must be very high to recover from these repeated early losses. Of course they know that Anderson, Broad and currently Woakes are very high-class bowlers, but even so there is pressure on the middle order to find enough runs for them to bowl at.

Hhs,
Completely agree and shows the importance of having a top coach and assistant who have the ability of strengthening the players' mental resolve which then leads to confidence and self-belief. The old adage: Success is: '10% inspiration - 90% perspiration.' With cricket a successful team is: '10% talent - 90% in the mind.'
I watched an interview with England's new Rugby coach, Eddie Jones, yesterday. His Aussie mental resolve oozed through the TV screen. No wonder he has transformed England's fortunes and in such a short time.
At Sussex, the only Coach who comes remotely close is Jon Lewis who, as Robinson so colourfully described, "Is a man's man - a proper bloke!"

Disgraceful behaviour by Alex Hales last night towasrds the umpires, for which he has been fined. But he has continued acting like a silly schoolboy brat in the field today.
He's got no runs in this series, has never made a Test century (unlike Lyth and Robson) and has only made five half-centuries in 20 Test innings. I rather hope is dropped and doesn't go on the winter tour.

"Golden era"(© Dobell when England play well) or "accident waiting to happen" (© Dobell when England play poorly)?
I'm not sure. But England need at least two new batsmen in their top five. Hales (average 27, no century in 11 Tests) and Vince (average 19, no half-century in seven Tests)just not good enough. Maybe Ballance , too.
Adam Lyth and Sam Northeast for the winter tour, for me...
ps: Vince's stats as he has moved up to play against better bowlers are telling. It roughly goes like this : Div two avge: 50; Div One avge: 30; Test avge: 20.
Can Northeast translate his div two form to a higher level? I think he should at least be given the chance...

"Golden era"(© Dobell when England play well) or "accident waiting to happen" (© Dobell when England play poorly)? Amused to see that these two wildly contradictory stances, both of which have been trotted out in the course of this Test match summer, have tonight coalesced into somerhing described as "a failure to evolve" !!! He does make a v good statistical point though: apart from Cook and Root, the last man to score a century batting for England in the top five was...Adam Lyth.
