MrsD, Hatchett was born in shoreham and educated at Steyning Grammer School, so yes, a local thoroughbred. I have no idea why Nash asked him to bowl the last over. Why wasn't Yasir the death-bowler? I fear those extra 10 runs may be the undoing of this match. 101-5. 38 to win off 4 overs. It should be 28 off 4 - far more doable. Arafat goes... Despair mounting. Agree 100% re Arafat to bowl last

MrsD,
I am resigned to a loss and any chance of Sussex making 4th place are - bar a miracle - gone. All down to Will to become the hero. Similar to the comparable home game.
16 to win off 6. 6 to win off 6 should have been the outcome and very doable. Just shows the importance of choosing the right bowler to bowl the last over and a primary reason why Sussex have under-performed so badly in T20 during the last two seasons.
All over with Beer's wicket.

Lidless catching,hatchetts bowling.
Nash should have bowled the last over
At some point we will note that Liddle and hatchett economy rates are no better than luke wright,Chris nah,Rory Hamilton brown, Steffens Piolet ,etc.
as it turns out it was better to bat first...instead of DL favour ing the second team we got confused feeling they would stop for bad light and threw wickets away.

A lot of tosh being spoken on here tonight, particularly from S&F. Christ knows why BM applauded your post about players adapting when you use Wright and Wells for a comparsion - Wells is 23. What was Wright doing at 23? I can tell you he wasn't adapting to both/all forms of the game. So an awful comparison.
You say the form is a god-send for batsmen, then you slate a bowler for going for too many in the final over, when the swash-buckling is at its most potent. Nash rightly trusted one of his main bowlers over the other part timers and he got tonked anyway. It happens all the time, I've seen it happen numerous times to Arafat, Steyn, Morkel, Lee, Khan, Broad.... the list goes on.
Two hands, eight fingers, two thumbs and ten seamers who have improved; Payne, W. Gidman, Palladino, Gurney, Fletcher, Barker, Coles, Wood, Rushworth, Curran. Took me two minutes to compile that list and they're all English and I didn't even include Hatchett - who has clearly improved in this form over the last two years.
Anyway, good game, no bugger there but good game. We could have won that if a few little things had been different - granted, the final over being one of 'em. But that's T20. Our young players shhould learn and improve, just like Wright had to when he was a young player. Incidentally, duck for him today, what's all that about? Surely if Wright had scored another ten runs we could have won that? And that from a senior.
A footnote; Beero should bat higher, seven.

Another hugely disappointing performance Time to plan for next season methinks and try and find a balanced line up that can compete in this one day stuff. Would love to know Robbo's reasoning behind always selecting the extra bowler. All our quicker bowlers, apart from Arafat, are generally nothing more than canon fodder in this format. Seriously, we would be better served by playing the extra batter and sharing the load between the part time bowlers. Other than a few specialist death bowlers, most quicks are no more successful than the part timers. I don't know why, but I quite fancy us in the 50 overs competition. I always thought it was our best chance of a trophy. Let's play the youngsters now Not because they are faring any better, they're not, but at least they are young enough and might improve. My side for the remainder of these games would be Nash Machan Wright Wells Hamilton-Brown Yardy if fit, or Finch Brown Beer Piolet Arafat Hatchett

Look at that Frawdy, eight home grown players and two others who also played here as youngsters

Ten of those players who you would play for the remainder played tonight - so well done Jonrobbo. Liked the look of all our homies tonight, they were a big positive and we should stick by it - especially now. Don't agree it was a disappointing performance to be honest, thought both teams played well but they nicked it.
I'm looking forward to the 50 over comp, think we'll go well.

Yes they did play tonight, and with mixed fortunes. We have to persist with them because, to be quite honest, the older brigade are unlikely to improve at this stage of their careers

Sorry Mrs D in the excitement I missed him off. Great to see.
And for everyone slating him about that final over, you only learn this by going through it. Arafat didnt just turn into a great death bowler over night....

Why did Hatchett bowl the last over? Nash should have taken responsibility and bowled the last over like Jack Taylor did. The extra pace gave McCarter a chance. With the bat Nash and Machan were to blame for failing to go on when well set.

You do learn from experience. But this was a bad experience for Hatchett. So not a good learning experience. I agree with those who asked why he bowled the last over. It was probably a captain's hunch that went wrong. I hope the captain learns from experience.
I also agree that we are playing too many bowlers and not enough batters. It must send a signal that the senior management do not have confidence in the bowlers. Four bowlers and a couple of fiddlers should be plenty or you need the batters to fire all the time which is plan A, we need more than just plan A. Where has the false optimism of last Friday gone? After all we were only chasing fourth qualification place. I do not see any problems with keeping with most of the current team, see who might be good for next year. Keep Wells in, he might surprise me and be a good T20 player. Being young and consigned to the championship must be a pretty bad stigma to be carried by a young and ambitious player.
