An occasional series. Number 1, the man who hired a Nobel prizewinner as his piano player.

Ah, thanks - Mr Zimmerman, I presume? According to one of the most authoritative sources on Dylan: "Straight after graduation, the 18-year-old Dylan caught a Greyhound to Fargo in North Dakota and got a job as a busboy at the Red Apple Cafe. ...The top group locally was Bobby Vee and The Shadows, who went on to have several hits, notably 'Take Good Care of My Baby'. Dylan talked himself into an audition by lying that he had played piano with Conway Twitty. He played a couple of local gigs with the band but was not taken on as a permanent member - largely, it seems, because he could only really play in the key of C. 'A spacy lkttle guy, just sort of worming his way around', was how Vee later recalled him. That didn't prevent Dylan from telling everyone back in Hibbing that he'd played piano on Vee's hit record 'Suzy Baby'."

It has been quite a year for departures of one kind or another. Hard to say if Greg Lake, whose death is announced, lived up to his early promise, but I hope his years in mega-groups made him happy.

A very sad year for ELP fans. "Threnody" - your vocabulary never ceases to amaze. I love the Beatles "panegyric".

And still more grim reaping. In a bumper year for pop and rock deaths, George Michael follows on after Bowie, Prince, Cohen, etc etc etc....perhaps borderman has a complete record as he has written obituaries for most of them.

The excellent christhebarker has updated his Sgt Pepper style infographic to include the sad mother and daughter pairing of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.

A great song. A musician who made his annual income over a 46 year-old period from writing and recording one famous tune! It's that time of age. The only question: Will more creative artistes die in 2017 or 2016?

Here we go again...Peter Sarstedt, famous for this
ands also for being the brother of Eden Kane. And also the brother of Robin Sarstedt, another 'one hit wonder'. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYSdh8UKul8). The three brothers did record together back in 1973 as - guess what - 'The Sarstedt Brothers': www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb3SPUxK-k0
