How on Hove's name do we break this injury curse? This happened on the first day of the new season, for goodness sake. We were not even allowed a week! Although Philander was very successful in Tests against Australia in November, and against Sri Lanka at the turn of the year, since then his record has been: 1 domestic Limited Overs game in February taking 1-38 3 Tests v New Zealand throughout March taking 2-203 Maybe if he has put on weight that could mean he hasn't trained as thoroughly as he should and he is showing the effects of not being either fully match-fit or being able to bowl himself into form and fitness. It may be very bad luck but, as with Mr Fizz, shouldn't we be monitoring these very big investments to make sure they meet our requirements? |

I watched quite a bit of the NZ v SA Tests and although Philander did frequently beat the bat in the last two Tests (when he went wicketless in both), Kepler Wessels on commentary made some very perceptive comments about his bowling. In summary he was concerned he had lost his nip that he had when he picked up so many wickets before (reflected in his speeds being in the 120s rather than the low 130s). He hasn't taken a wicket for a long time (the two mentioned by hhsussex were in the 1st Test)!!! I question whether he will be in the SA side for the Tests this summer unless he shows signs of significant improvement and I agree that fitness is probably a key issue.

The term 'due diligence' comes to mind. Something which Sussex are not that good at.

Looks like he has shifted a few pounds during his rehab. Good on him for coming back with a spring in his step. Seems to be very keen in the field with his encouragement of the other bowlers as well.
