The Melbourne Stars are making a complete rhubarb of their 152 run-chase against the Adelaide Strikers. Wright out for 9 and now the team are 90-5 with 7 overs left. Once again it is down to Pietersen to save the day. Presently on 22*. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/ECKO40455#tab-0 edit: Credit to MS, they just managed to scrape through with 3 balls to spare thanks to a 32 run knock (off 24 balls) from Aussie seamer Hilfenhaus. KP also managed 32 before being run out. This places the 'BBL chokers' in third place after 5 matches. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/australian-twenty20/table

An easy win for the Stars v The Perth Scorchers. Almost 3 overs remained as a low run chase of 135 seemed inevitable to achieve. KP was again the star (44*), this time playing an anchor role for Stoinis (40*) to score the winning runs. Interestingly, Pietersen targetted Tim Bresnan's bowling at every opportunity. A sign of the upset towards his latter England playing days? Meanwhile, and disappointingly, Luke Wright repeats his BBL pattern by starting strongly but then fading as the tournament progresses. He never seemed settled at the crease although having Mitchell Johnson bowl at you must unease most batsmen. An enjoyable watch as the match was shown live on Channel 5. The Stars now move top of the BBL League. www.melbournestars.com.au/news/match-report/match-report-v-scorchers/2017-01-14Meanwhile, BBC Radio 'Stumped' rubs the ECBs face with their reluctance to create Franchise Cricket in the past with a clip from an interview with BBL Head, Anthony Everard, discussing the growing success of the tournament. The proverbial big ask for Wright as Stars make a disastrous start, Quiney and Pietersen falling in successive balls and currently 16/2 in almost 4 overs.

The proverbial big ask for Wright as Stars make a disastrous start, Quiney and Pietersen falling in successive balls and currently 16/2 in almost 4 overs. Watching this on tv and Luke batting v carefully - 19 from 25 balls. Can't believe he has ever played a slower T20 innings. Tymal's opening two overs went for nine and Luke played him v cautiously - three runs from six balls. This game is a bit like a school XI v staff match. Seven of the Melbourne side are over 31 and 8 of the Hobart side are under 24!

Brilliant from Mills - 1 -20 from his four overs and only one bopundary conceded.
Luke 44 not out with only two overs to go and looking to carry his bat with an unusually low score. But at 116-6, the Stars would have been in a sorry state without him...

A very mature innings from Wright (60*) but is the pitch as tough to play as the Stars batsmen believed? Perhaps, it was excellent bowling and fielding from the Brisbane Heat?
At present, the Heat are going to walk this match at 44-2 off 6 overs.
edit: Brisbane Heat won by 7 wickets with 11 balls spare.

A very mature innings from Wright (60*) but is the pitch as tough to play as the Stars batsmen believed? This may be the benefit of hindsight, but I think Luke misread the pitch. Commentators said the pitch had been used before and was possibly a little bit two-paced. But I think our man got spooked into thinking it was a minefield when two wkts fell to the first two balls of the match ( I missed both of them as I was still in the kitchen making tea and toast!!!) The brutal truth is that Luke's slow start meant his team failed to recover from the early wkts when counter-attack might have served him better. He only hit three fours in 20 ovrs, ffs. Sure, he might have perished if he'd shown more ambition and he never looked to be at his fluent best. But my guess (again with hindsight) is that the reason for that was that he had lost the battle in his head by convincing himself after two balls that it was a 135-140 pitch. Then just when he should have been thinking about teeing-off around the half-way mark, two further wkts fell in two balls and sent him back into his shell. Although it wasn't a 200-plus road, the way the Heat batted suggested that 165-170 was probably more like a par score.

Melbourne Stars batting struggling against the Sydney Sixers as wickets collapse. Such a pleasure watching Wright bat alongside Pietersen. Luke scores a respectable 62 runs off 47 balls. What has become so noticeable during BBL6 is that the bowling amongst the top Big Bash sides is improving; and why leading heavy batters like the Stars are finding it more difficult this season. Once more the pressure is on KP to get the team over a very average 170+ score. edit: All the Stars can muster is 156 on a pitch that is more 180+. Their batsmen looked out of sorts - especially KP who struggled with his timing. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/ECKO40465

Worrying that Wright didn't take to the field for the second innings. Apparently he jarred his back while batting as he slid to get over the line. He also had an injury to his arm which was visibly bleeding.

Joe,
Very worrying!
It will be interesting to see if Wright plays in the semis against Perth Scorchers. The Stars squeeze through on better run rate. They have lost both form and momentum, so need an injection of chutzpah.

The Melbourne Stars luckily squeezed into the semi-finals of the BBL but are now facing an humiliation of gigantic proportions as they bat against the Perth Scorchers. With their form and momentum already falling off a cliff, they faced the ravages of a Mitchell Johnson who has figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs after his allotted 4 overs. Two of them were maidens. Surely, the greatest bowling figures in the history of the BBL. Is this down to the pitch or super-human bowling? Our Luke was out for nought after 3 balls. KP out for 5 after 10. Now Captain Hussey and Gotch are attempting a partnership. The present score stands at 46-4 after 10 overs. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/ECKO40466

Heard Vaughan and Tufnell talking Big Bash on R5 Live last night. It seems to go from strength to strength -some of the attendance figures Vaughan read out were extraordinary, far outstripping attendances at the Aus v Pakiastan ODIs.
What a shame England is going to have to wait until 2020 for an equivalent. When it finally gets underway Vaughan predicted the same thing will happen here and that apart from the Ashes, the new EPL will overtake international cricket as the main attraction.
The ICC approved the Olympic Stadium yesterday as suitable not only for T20 but for 50 over cricket as well. Bad news for Surrey who are reportedly still opposed to the new tournament. The Oval could now miss out altogether with Lords and the Olympic Stadium (capacity 60,000) hosting the two London teams - although Lizzy Ammon, bless her, reckons it's going to be Beckenham!!!

Bm, As you say, what a shame we have to wait until 2020, but by then the SKY T20 deal is over and BTSports, hopefully, will be chomping at the bit to turn the initial 5 year EPL media rights contract into a good ol' fashioned fist-fight. Here are the 2017 Melbourne Stars BBL attendance figures. Astonishing really when compared to any other form of cricket. And this is just after 4 home games!! It doesn't include their disappointing semi-final today. Meanwhile, the Stars now have over 10,000 paid up Members. gostars.com.auThank you Melbourne. It seems to go from strength to strength -some of the attendance figures Vaughan read out were extraordinary, far outstripping attendances at the Aus v Pakiastan ODIs. And to prove the point, CA has announced next season's Big Bash is being expanded from eight qualifying games per team to 10. So very, very frustrating that we have another THREE seasons before we see an English equivalent. What a wasted opportunity!
