Has left Leicestershire, after being replaced in the side by Harry Dearden and with new coach Pierre de Bruyn making disparaging remarks about him. Apart from further destabilising a Leicester side that seemed to be turning the corner, it makes for some interesting sspeculation about nwhere he might go. In cricinfo the sage Dobell says "The market for solid, red ball players is not vibrant at present " but there are counties who could do with a solid competent opening batsman , good enough to have reached 50 28 times over the last three seasons, even though only scoring two centuries. I wonder whether Mark Davis would be interested, if Wells is seen as having a better future first wicket down and Van Zyl's form has returned (in South ASfrica at least) since going back to the middle order? www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2017/content/story/1091702.html

He's a decent championship opener, and we aren't blessed with many genuine openers, or indeed batsmen of any description. We have lost a lot of quality from our top order in recent years, without really adequately finding replacements. What we really need is a top class opening batsman, but we'd struggle to procure a domestic one, so our best chance would be to use the overseas route

The middle order should come good with Van Zyl, Wright, Evans, Finch and Brown all capable of getting runs. The problem is finding a partner for Nash. Wells, Finch and Salt are the three possibles here, but Salt so far has looked much more like a white ball basher, Wells certainly improved in consistency and fluency when he was demoted last season, and Finch needs to seize opportunities. I don't think there are many overseas batsmen of that pedigree left unsigned now, and it probably wouldn't be easy to get one to sign up for the August/September legs of the championship, even if the money hasn't already been spent.

Yes, I worded that incorrectly I should have said, we aren't blessed with too many opening batsmen, nor much depth of batting, when it comes to top six batsmen

Wow, this has come out of nowhere but one presumes the story is fact. Vith has been reporting at Hove since Friday, so perhaps, he was tipped off by Davis or Greenfield? If so, not sure where GD comes into it. Anyway, seems a promising signing given our batting needs to be strengthened.

I'm sure that's going to be a regular feature of cricinfo politics: what GD wants, GD gets. Meanwhile lets hope that what Sussex need has been provided.

Suffice to say, we are short of opening batsman, and he has a decent record in championship cricket, albeit in Division Two. I'm not sure what he does for our white ball hopes though, so I'd still prefer us to opt for an overseas big hitting batsman, if Philander has to return home

The scoop from ESPNCricinfo yesterday that Sussex are signing Angus Robson tomorrow from Leicestershire becomes ever more intriguing.
I had a brief chat with journalist Vithushan Ehantharajah today whom alongside George Dobell wrote the said article stating Sussex had jumped in early doors and signed Robson initially for 2017 in front of other counties with an extension clause depending on how well he fairs.
I asked Vith where his information came from and to my surprise he explained that it had not emerged from the Sussex coaching staff but from another source altogether - more likely from Leicestershire's side. And this had been verified from a second source of George Dobell's. There has been no tip off from Mark Davis.
Understandably, Vith would not say who these two sources were but I sensed Robson's agent might be a good call for one of them. Being one of the Paragon 'boys' whose other clients include Chris Woakes, Sam Northeast, Jack Brooks and Alastair Cook, this has logic.
Another intriguing factor is that Sussex Media Officer, Adam Matthews, I am told is away until Wednesday, so if the Cricinfo scoop is true, we may not hear anything official until the latter part of this week.

Your pal Vithushan seems to be very clear. Do Sussex actually have any active media relations now that Tom Rose is gone? Meanwhile, Sussex have confirmed they are "in the process of registering" Angus Robson. The batsman, who was released by Leicestershire earlier this season, could come into the first-team squad for Sussex's next match against Nottinghamshire, which starts on Friday. www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2017/content/story/1092961.html

I guess it leaves them scope to do something now about our current batting predicament, perhaps the recruitment of a short term OS batsman
