...has retired at the age of 25, saying he has other ambitions to fulfil ( www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/39720334). With a double first in politics, philosophy and sociology he is well equipped for life outside the bubble of professional cricket, and after his history of injuries and an underwhelming Test debut last winter it isn't surprising he should be making this move now. Bad luck for Surrey, for whom he had played competently and sometimes more. After Batty goes, will there be any Surrey spinners? A correspondent on the Surrey message board has this to say of him: "He was one of a number of victims of the Adams era, a very young man playing when his university studies permitted. I could see immediately that he was a highly promising left-arm bowler and lower-middle-order batting. Adams, in his infinite wisdom, tried to turn him into an opener and marginalised his spin-bowling when he was available to play for us, in the second half of the summer, when it would have been most productive."

This comes as a shock as it does when any talented young cricketer with big potential throws in the towel so early on in a career. I felt similar surprise when Sussex's all-rounder from South Africa, Kirk Wernars, left cricket to become a fireman. At least, law has a better ring about it. Although, to blame Chris Adams for this retirement is pretty far-fetched.
Ansari came up the Surrey Colts ranks viewed as a future 1st XI star. I am sure there are other reasons for his departure apart from injuries which cricket followers know little about.
Anyway, good luck to him in whatever profession he chooses.

Anyway, good luck to him in whatever profession he chooses. I don't think he is blamed for Ansari's retirement, but for adopting perverse and unhelpful theories that hampered his development. After all, we do know something of other talented young bowling all-rounders at Surrey whom Adams, disastrously, tried to turn into openers, don't we? Hint...clue is in the letters CJ.
