We come to perhaps the highlight of our 2017 Royal London Cup home campaign when Surrey travel to the 1st Central County Ground on Sunday 7th May. (11am start). Its always exciting to welcome the Oval club here to Sussex at any level and age group.
Our records thus far are very similar with both clubs on two wins. We will go in to the game on a high after a wonderful win at the St Lawrence ground but like wise will Surrey. They took Middlesex at home when Rampaul produced a stunning spell of 4 for 40 off 10 overs. That reduced the visitors to a low score and then Burns and Foakes calmly chased down.
For me it will be very interesting to see how veteran Sri Lanka player Kumar Sangakkara gets on. The 39 year old wicket keeper batsman has been in very solid form with some big scores under his belt. I am sure he will receive a nice round of applause tomorrow as he steps out to bat.
The weather looks fair, if not the warm sunny day that we all crave right now, and should stay dry for the entire match.
Its one to savour and lets hope for s massive crowd, our new oversea's to explode into life and perhaps Chris or Luke to progress to a ton.
See you all down there.
GOSBTS !

Jofra Archer Will Beer Danny Briggs Michael Burgess (wkt) Laurie Evans Harry Finch George Garton Chris Nash Ajmal Shahzad Jerome Taylor Stiaan van Zyl David Wiese Luke Wright (c) Burgess replaces Brown, whose finger was broken in the Canterbury game, otherwise the same squad and I would have thought the same 10 players with him. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-sharks-welcome-surrey-for-latest-royal-london-one-day-cup-tussleSurprising how little comment this game has received either here or on the Surrey forum. I suppose for Sussex followers it must be the shock of wininng two successive one-day games, or indeed games of any kind, that has stunned into silence.

107-1 after 20 overs is a very solid platform on which to build. It does look as if Finch is taking his chance now, and though he is not quite such a fluent stroke-maker as Machan he still scores at a very good rate and looks comfortable.

Is 300 enough? When Finch and Van Zyl were going well, and then later when Evans and Burgess flourished it looked as if something like the Kent total could have been reached but Surrey twice took two wickets in an over and then Archer was run out. He hasn't had much impact with the bat in 50 over games, surprisingly because he is so effective in the first-class game as a strokemaker: perhaps he should go in higher up. Anyway, there is something for him and Garton and the rest to bowl at now.

Could go either way. Don't think we can really judge Archer's limited over batting yet as he hasn't had much of an opportunity, he either gets to the crease in dire situations or when there are very few balls left to face. Could always try him pinch hitting up the order?

A decent crowd for a Hove RLC match. I reckon this is going to be a close one. Pity Sussex fell away towards the end. The side was on for 350 at one stage. We missed Brown. A nice touch that Gareth Batty's wife and their baby are watching in the North part of the ground. The Surrey 4s are free-flowing in the first two overs. 13-0 off 2.

Taylor is bowling well. Deserves a second wicket. Appears to have acclimatised now and is running in with a full head of steam. Sussex fielding well too. To repeat, this game could be a gud 'un. Sibley in for Sangakkara.

That's it. Good figures for Wiese and Garton and all seem to have done well. Prospects rosy enough now in the 50 over competition and hope they will translate to the championship by 21 May. Very strong plus points from these games are the innings of Finch, Evans, Nash and Burgess today. Maybe we can get through the season without the class batsman that we seemed to be missing so much.

Based purely on "that" catch Burgess took today, that class batsman could be Brown once finger is fixed...

Burgess looked very tidy behind the stumps - and that catch - wow!! www.facebook.com/sussexccc/videos/10155305258299855/

After our first innings felt Surrey were favorites, just. Good performance all round by us to win. Seems we are playing with far more confidence and team spirit, felt we went quiet after first ten overs on too many occasions. Wiese bowled well, always a threat. Only thing that bothered me was how quickly some fans leave, rushing off as soon as game over. Surrey fans I understand but felt Sussex fans should have stayed on to clap teams off. Enjoy the win! I know some have trains/bus to get and time can be tight but some who rushed off were walking back to cars - and parking is free!! Anyhow great team performance today, smile on a Sunday before going back to work!

The game wasn't close at all, instead this was an emphatic win for Sussex. Everything has changed on the field. Energy, confidence, momentum, batting, fielding... a completely different team from 10 days ago.
Surrey badly missed Sangakkara but the way Sussex beat their arch-rivals via another excellent batting performance followed by consistent bowling and excellent fielding was a joy to watch. And if Sussex can beat Gloucestershire next Sunday at the Saffrons, then qualification for the QFs? Certainly, winning two matches from the final three should do it.
It is tempting to say that Sussex are due for a fall after 3 consecutive wins but as momentum gathers pace why?
