I have to say... I have not seen anyone batting wise that has excited me than the times I have watched Phil Salt play 2nd team cricket. He has supreme ability to score at pace. Agree he can be reckless but I feel over time he can learn to manage this.
Tony Cottey once said to me - he reminds him of Matt Maynard at similar ages - Used to score the most sublime runs and just needed to find the click to scoring huge runs. Hopefully they can have similar careers.
For me, we must give him time - We aren't producing many of our own batsmen (okay, I know isn't a Sussex boy) so we should try and develop the ones we have.

Born in Wales brought up in the Caribbean and schooled in Surrey. You can see the Caribbean influence in his batting.

Just saw this post after returning from holiday in South Wales. On Monday 7th of August I dropped in on the seconds game against Glamorgan at Panteg Cricket Club. Myself and the other small number of spectators witnessed what I would describe as one of the most brutal and and at the same time accomplished innings which I have seen for some time courtesy of young Phil Salt. He blasted about 183 runs off many fewer balls in a team innings of 303 (unfortunately he ran out of batting partners). I sat within earshot of the Glamorgan coaching staff and physios etc and from what I heard Phil has many admirers across the country particularly for his white ball skills and abilities and it was being questioned why he does not play regularly in the T20 blast format for Sussex. It seems certain to me that if we do not re-sign him at the end of the season then somebody else will and very quickly by the sound of things! One q uestion which I do have though...... I see no mention or report of this game on the Sussex CCC web-site which begs the question ..what other action /information do they fail to report on? I would like to know the outcome of this entertaining match! Thanks jonners52, a really helpful and interesting first post on this forum. Welcome and please post more often!

Too many Kolpaks and ordinary outsiders in the way of the lad at Sussex. Gotta be the worst place to be an academy product - ask Will Beer. Kolpaks are not easy to shift, especially if your coach is one, or something similar. They're quite good compared to a 20 year old learning his trade. That's the conundrum. A conundrum for most people anyway. Lose them and do the right thing by your club and country is the answer.

I fear Beer and Salt (along with Magoffin) maybe released at the end of the season to make way for new signings.

I hope not, with the extra money available to counties, we should be able to offer Burgess a deal, and make sure we have an overseas for the duration. With Shahzad and Machan leaving, there should also be enough money in the pot for one A List signing, if we can find one. That's all we need.

As I alluded in this thread yesterday my fear is that someone is going to come in and make Salt an offer he cannot refuse and whilst Davis remains in charge with his policy of standing by his winter signings who would blame him for leaving? (

I should have added to my earlier post that I was at Lords last night to witness the debacle that was the final two overs of what was up until then an enjoyable match which we should have won at a canter.
I was sat with a group of Sharks fans who along with myself were totally bemused at how and why Laurie Evans has retained his place in the starting line up?
Surely of all of the winter signings he has produced the lowest return on investment and apparently he is now one of the highest earners (according to a fan who claims to be "in the know")!
My question is...what message does it send to the others players when someone performs consistently poorly and yet still retains their place in the team regardless?
This is hardly the ethos of a successful and winning team mentality and I have no doubts that Rob Andrew is fully aware of this given his extensive background in successful team sports. I sincerely hope that Mr Andrew steps upto the plate at the end of the season and addresses this and other glaring inadequacies which are apparent under this Head Coach!

With Shahzad's departure, Beer Jordan Magoffin and Salt are the remaining players whose current contracts are set to expire this season. Despite all the claims to the contrary I wouldn't expect Magoffin to continue as a player after this year, though I hope he will be fit to at least play a part in one of the final games: it might be a last hurrah for him. I'm sure that he will be earmarked as yet another to join the player/coach escalator, thoiugh goodness knows how he could be fitted in, unless someone higher up the food chain departs.
Jordan's is the one to worry about: can we afford to keep him? His has been a slow-burning summer and disappointing particularly in the early championship games he played but he has now come back into form at the right time. He will have lots of T20 offers - he has already signed for the South African competition - but other counties will also want him as bowler, attacking late-order batsman and as a slip fielder nonpareil.
Then Beer - what next for him? He's getting a bit long in the tooth to be the next white hope and Mason Crane seems to be the boy in residence there. If Sussex don't want him, where would he go? Probably he'd get into the Derby, Leics or Glamorgan championship teams, but would he have a future there?
Salt needs a chance now to show that he's matured and can play tactically as well as adventurously, but time is running out for him. If he can't get back into the side for the run-in, he may be the next casualty of the Sussex production line.
Finally, one whose contract expires in 2018, but gossip on another noticeboard suggests that he has been in talks with Warwickshire. Maybe that has unsettled him on the field as well as off, and perhaps he didn't give up the captaincy as freely as was put about?

Article on sccc site dated 14 Dec 16 says Jordan extends his contract by one year meaning he will be with county to at least end of 2018 season.

I presume you refer to Luke Wright? I am very concerned about him, at present. The last two years, Wright's form for Sussex has gone backwards and after giving up the Captaincy what will keep him at the club? He may need a new county to rediscover his cricketing "joie de vivre". He seems very out-of-sorts as you suggest. His type of dismissal in the second innings is inexplicable.
There were rumours of Luke being tapped up by Surrey before being given the Captaincy, so I am not surprised to hear the rumour about Warwickshire. It's a worrying time for supporters and one just hopes that rather like Nash discovering his form in August, Wright will do the same during September which may allow him to settle down again. At present, he comes over like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Leicestershire are after Tredwell and see him as a mentoring father figure for Parkinson and Sayer in much the same way as Claude Henderson was.
