This has the look of a very decisive win. If Sussex can go on and finish this from here (66-5 at tea) then perhaps they can surprise cynics and long-suffering observers like me, and go on and get promotion. Timing is all, and this would be a great opportunity to leapfrog Kent. Fingers crossed.
And good to see Whittingham get the chance and take it too!

Archer is now the leading wicket-taker in the country with 49 wickets. Second is Harmer on 48, second in Div 2 is Leach of Worcs - 47.

And, we're home by 9 wickets - a pity that Luke Wells perished, but a really good result against the second placed team. We are now 3rd with a game in hand. What a difference a week makes.

Well done Sussex! A crushing victory over a strong promotion contender. A sign that Sussex have not only found momentum but now firmly placed themselves within the chasing pack behind Nottinghamshire. The Division 2 table looks a mightily enjoyable view tonight. Take a gander. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/county-championship-division-two/table

Take a gander. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/county-championship-division-two/tableIt will look even better if it rains all day tomorrow at Northampton, fluffy. A fine win anyway, and despite some of the fears expressed here, it does look from the performances as if it was a team win. Archer has performed superbly this year, but has had no consistent cohort: just the last few games from Philander and fits and starts from Jordan, and yet they have bowled sides out with Wiese, Briggs and Van Zyl all picking up the odd one or two or three, and Whittingham here joining in. It wasn't what we expected at the beginning of the season looking at this theoretically superb pace attack, but the job has been done more often than not, and despite the change in captaincy and some odd-looking team selections. The next few weeks will be interesting. On paper the obvious crunch game in the final one against Notts, but with such narrow margins involved every one is vital and the Northampton game in the first week of September might be the make or break.

I think we would prefer Northants to play and lose as a draw will, I think, put them back above us. However, things definitely look rosier.

They have gained 23 points, 16 for the win, 4 for batting, 3 for bowling, moving from a total of 109 to 132. See my musings on the table and total bonus points at the start of the match here unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/26115. Sussex have moved from 40 bonus points to 47. Just sloppy journalism and increasingly hard to relay on accuracy, as Cricinfo no longer shows bonus points accrued in its stats summary and Cricket Archive is paywalled.

That's what happens when the marketers lose sight of why their product is popular and instead go all out to trade on that popularity with flash designs that give the adverts an increased amount of space at the expense of the information that brought the punters to the site.

What a difference a week makes. 2 T20 wins and now a drubbing of Worcester in the CC.
A great team performance as Wiese continues his resurgence, Jordan finds some consistency and Nash is back in the runs. Hallelujah!
Good to see Stu Whittingham in the wickets too.
Hopefully we'll have Magoffin and Wright back for the remaining CC games and can really push on for that second promotion spot.
GOSBTS!

Well, that was a good win. I have to say Wiese had a better game. Almost earned his salary this week. Whittingham, just 2 wickets, don't get carried away. I like him but like Garton needs managing. Surely Garton would be better playing for the 2nds than drinks monitor? Ditto Evans? Use an academy player. Play the pro's. Briggs, I like him but his returns, not what I would want. Like Liquidskin I like Beer in my team, just makes it balanced/different. SvZ can operate as the medium paced seamer, he's shown a knack for picking up wickets here and there. Brown, well, what can you say, seems to be growing into this, far better than Wright. Sometimes it's the most unlikely that make leaders. I hope this increases his influence at the club?
And to all you doom sayers weeks and months ago, I said have faith. Things are turning BUT do not get carried away. T20 on Thursday, RT captaincy leaves a lot to be desired, on field and selection, let's hope Brown has a say?
As for Magoffin, why would we want him back? What can he offer? Good servant, prolific taker of wickets but age is against him. He might have something to offer. I don't know.
