For those who enjoy these things, here is a lovely juxtaposition of the series batting and bowling averages of Leach and Moeen, which of course proves nothing except that you can't base arguments on the transitory nature of averages:

No comments in this thread on the 3rd Test, presumably because everything is going so well. England deserve credit for being on the brink of a 3-0 series in Sri Lanka. It's easy to forget that Sri Lanka beat South Africa comfortably in two Tests in Sri Lanka this year. A new team seems to be forming. It's going to be interesting to see how England perform against the Aussies next summer.

Congratulations to England on what seems to be a very successful transitionary side. The final averages are revealing: Foakes is clearly a great find, and so is Leach. Stokes seems to have found a new role as slightly more of a batsman who bowls pentrating spells, and Ali has clearly revelled in not being the token spinner in the side. There should be more of the same in the West Indies, where pitches for the last few years have been slow and encouraged spinners, particularly orthodox left armers and legspinners.Rashid could be valuable there in short bursts, but the greater control that Moeen has might be the deciding factor. And although I don't expect England to drop either Anderson or Broad for that tour, I think that next summer must be the last hurrah for Anderson at least. Tempting to consider who might open the bowling with him against Australia, with Curran, Stokes, Ali and Leach to make up a strong and varied attack: Stone perhaps if he stays fit and shows temperament, but otherwise there is nobody currently available possessing genuine pace who hasn't be tried and found wanting. Maybe we'll have to settle for "English-type" bowlers such as Sanderson, just to do a specific job while we look at the production line of fast bowlers. Or we could always change the rules to get Jofra in before he's completely lost to the T20 leagues.
