Bayliss: We're not really taking Jennings on tour are we Smithy? I mean, Test cricket isn't exactly my cup of Veuve Clicquot but even I can tell he's useless.
Smith: I totally agree, but we're in a bit of a corner after I ran off at the mouth on TMS the other day about not taking two new openers to Sri Lanka.
Bayliss: Well you're supposed to be the brainbox round here ... Sort it out!
Smith: Yes yes yes I'm working on it! Meanwhile, if we're going to be getting out of Jennings futures you need to start laying the groundwork with the media.
Bayliss [after giving interview about how it could go either way with Jennings and that he should be nervous]: How was I?
Smith: Good. Anyway I've solved our little problem. Watch and learn ... Hey Rooty, got a minute?!
Root: Yes, Smithy?
Smith: Didn't you used to open with Cooky, back in the day?
Root: Sure, I guess.
Smith: Well you're opening again, but this time it'll be with Burnsy. [Trades high-fives with Bayliss] Get in!

England have started their tour of Sri Lanka with a win against the Sri Lankan Cricket XI. A good start from Messrs Root and Morgan as they both scored 90s not out before the weather took its toll to give England a comfortable win using the Duckworth Lewis random number generator. However, surely the most exciting part of the game was the bowling of Kamindu Mendis. I have no idea about his skill levels, but anyone who can bowl right arm off spin and slow left arm in the same game against England deserves a mention. He also scored 22 with bat although disappointingly he only bats left handed.

I have a bad feeling about tomorrow's first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Jennings, Burns, Denly and Moeen Ali could between them be batting at 1, 2 and 3 which doesn't fill me with confidence. They will face a barrage of spin, I suspect, having had little time to prepare. It seems we are touring Sri Lanka during their wet season and two 2-day games in preparation look to be wholly inadequate, but it's the way international cricket is played these days. South Africa recently got thrashed at Galle, so I don't expect life to be any easier for our side. Am I being a pessimist or do others think we will shine? Or, should we start the rain dance now? The rain stayed away but England were 100-5 as predicted. Buttler, Foakes and Curran steadied the ship to take the score above 300 and I’d give day one to England. A good toss to win as batting on day four will be difficult if the rain stays away and the pitch dries out. Not sure how effective Sam Curran will be with no pace and not a lot of swing but can understand why he’s been picked ahead of Broad. Let’s hope the 3 England spinners can do a job tomorrow after Foakes gets his ton.

Worst England top three test side I've ever seen in my life time. And I'll be 12 on the 17th so that's a long time. Moeen at three? Think again. Stokes at five? Think again. We're a poor Test side right now. Not as bad as SL though. The standard in all Test cricket is really poor actually. Everybody is considerably worse than before, barring India probably. Although their batting is probably weaker than ever.

Sri Lanka are no mugs at home as they thrashed South Africa in Galle not long ago. I'll stop fretting about England's top order and revert back to worrying about the Sussex top order.

I believe that’s England’s first test win at Galle so well done to all.
Any changes for the 2nd test?

I believe that’s England’s first test win at Galle so well done to all. Any changes for the 2nd test? If it's a similar wicket, I'd keep the same 11. It was great to watch a genuine stumper at work, so I'll be gutted if Foakes doesn't keep his place. My only disappointment is that I don't know when the line up will contain Stokes, Woakes and Foakes.

I would make one change. Bairstow for Rashid. I'm not convinced we need three spinners. Rashid was ineffective in the first test. I would move Root to 3 and bat Bairstow at 4 and move Moeen back to number 8. Foakes to keep wicket.

Foakes retains the gloves and Stokes bats at 3 as England field the same XI for the second test at Kandy.

Jonathan Agnew told me this morning that England's expected first innings lead of 50-70 would make a big difference in the 2nd Test in Sri Lanka. I am wondering what he thinks now as Sri Lanka have ended up 46 runs ahead of England in first innings.

There’s only one thing worse than pundits who spout rubbish and that’s people who name-drop pundits who spout rubbish!
The tail wagged for SL as it did for England, honours fairly even I would say.
Interestingly SL were penalised 5 runs ( which were added on to England’s first innings total ) when a batter failed to ground his bat after running one whilst watching the ball he thought would go to the boundary be pulled up just inside. The umpires called dead-ball and docked SL 5 runs for basically being lazy!

That's worse than Ali at three. We're making some ill judged decisions in our attempts to cram an ungodly amount of all-rounders into the side. We're lucky we're playing the poorest SL side I've ever seen. We don't need six bowlers, we can't have Stokes or Ali at three, we need to play a batter there, that is Bairstow. We don't need Curran out here he's ineffective. Bairstow for Curran and Stone for Anderson. Five bowlers, three spinners, long batting line-up with a batter at three, Foakes keeps the gloves, Stokes and Stone the quicks, Ali at eight where he should be.
