It'll serve them right if no-one turns up for day 2! So - should cricket accept that it's in the entertainment business? Discuss.

Apparently "it was a day for the purists". I always get a bit jumpy at that usage. If you don't enjoy T20 (or, indeed, any shorter formats that might be in the offing), those who do will often accuse you of being the kind of 'purist' who likes nothing better than watching two teams trying their hardest to stop cricket happening for days on end. The afternoon session at Edgbaston produced 39 runs from 35 overs. Cricket doesn't get much purer than that!
"In a tussle between Division One's bottom two teams, not losing is a high priority". That's just the Nottingham Post reporter's diagnosis of course. Perhaps there were other factors responsible for today's miserable proceedings at Edgbaston. But he's probably at least partly right. Two-division Championship cricket might produce more matches that mean something than the old system did, but what those matches often seem to mean to the teams involved is that trying to win them is just far too risky. If counties in the relegation/promotion zones are already resigned to getting through their games in the least eventful way possible - and we're barely into June - then that's truly depressing.

Stung by Sussex fans' disapproval, Warwickshire upped the rate to 3.7 this morning. In the context of this match, it must have been like Hundred batsmen cashing in when a bowler starts flagging towards the end of an ill-advised Super Ten.
Flashblade's choice of words reminded me of something Robin Smith once said, for which he (Smith) will forever be a hero of mine. As Hampshire captain he made an enterprising declaration against Derbyshire to try and make something happen in a match that had been heading towards the familiar scenario of listlessly batting out time on the last day. Hampshire lost the match and Smith took a lot of stick for it. Afterwards he was unapologetic, saying "We have to remember we're in the entertainment business".
