Finally, after weeks of paralyzing ennui, inconsequential one-day games and the utter decline of the 2014 summer, we return to the County Championship on Sunday. County what was that? Never heard of it? Didn't that used to be about playing cricket?
We're in danger of frittering away what dwindling interest in the game survives the machinations of the ECB by having such a nonsensical break just at the point when the Championship and relegation/promotion battles are becoming interesting. It doesn't really help that the weather has turned rather dour in the last few weeks after a particularly hot and sultry July, nor that the Test series became such a predictable and anti-climactic cakewalk for Cook ("I thought you were my friend! How dare you suggest I'm less than godlike") and his TMG team (plus Jordan and Moeen).
Still, we have a few games to refresh the appetite before Lancs come to Hove:
Durham v Notts - can Durham break out of the spiral down to follow Northants into the Second Division, or will Notts keep themselves panting and slavering at the heels of Yorkshire right to the end?
Lancs v Yorks - added savour to this ancient rivalry, and piquancy for Sussex if Lancashire can work a miracle and thereby put pressure on Sussex to avoid the drop....more twists and turns than a left-handed corkscrew this season.
Kent v Glamorgan (and Hants v Leics, Derby v Worcs) - just the faintest glimmer for hope for Kent if they win one of their games in hand, and the leading pair stumble badly, probably on some flying elephant dung.
Finally Middlesex v Warwicks - the same elephants might sprinkle something magical and highly effluent on Middlesex and at the same time raise Warwickshire to the improbable status of serious contenders....maybe.
