Was watching Meridian News tonight and they had a feature on Tommy Cook with a new gravestone. Apparently he was the best dual sportsman to come out of Sussex who sadly took his life just before his 49th birthday having served in both wars. He represented the county through BHA and Sussex Cricket with distinction.
It was a shame that county cricket clubs didnt have an off season football competition in bygone days as Sussex's inability to win the county championship would have been offset by their likelihood of dominating at football in the 1950/60s with Ken Suttle, Don Bates and Dennis Forman who all played for Brighton's 1st team. Their main rivals would have been Yorkshire with Close, Illingworth and Boycott on professional football teams books in their youth and Fred Trueman who turned out for Lincoln City reserves.
Will Joe Gatting be the last person who played both professional football and cricket? Wouldn't surprise me. And with the Yorkshire link, I saw Billy Athey play for Ringmer FC against Eastbourne Borough FC during his time at Sussex.

Dave Sexton and Alan Gilliver played for Sussex 2nd’s. Freddie Goodwin the former Albion manager played for Lancashire. Cricketers such as John Langridge, Jim Parks, Les Lenham, Alan Oakman , Ian Thomson , Don Smith and Graham Cooper all played county league football or higher.
West Ham had Geoff Hurst, Eddie Presland and Jim Standen who all played county cricket. In the 50’s and 60’s most counties had players who played league football.

Even in the 70s there were players who crossed both sports and 80s as well notably Phil Neale, Chris Marples and Botham. The list is here en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_cricket_and_football_playersI see that Stuart Leary is omitted who played for Kent and Charlton and another who sadly committed suicide. Interesting to note that Gloucestershire would have made a good football team with Arthur Milton, Barrie Meyer and Harold Jarman all in the Glos squad at the same time who had played professional football. CB Fry of Sussex CCC while not having the county's roots was the best ever all round sportsman. In the 70s, Peter Squires, Alistair Hignell and Dusty Hare played rugby for England and county cricket. We had Paul Parker and Ian Greig who both played for Cambridge with PWGP missing a Blue in 1977 through injury to be replaced by his county team mate. A few years later Rob Andrew was to make his England rugby debut through his performances for Cambridge.

There was a stupid cryptic question on QOS once; Which player had a hat trick for England but never took any wickets for his county? Along the lines of which 3 players from S****horpe Utd played for England.

Bob Mellon? He blew his brains out too but that was because he murdered a load of people after he joined a cult in the 30s. I forget which 30s exactly.
