Could find no thread for this player which shows how out of favour he has become. So perhaps his work with Scotland this winter will provide a springboard for competition in our middle order come April. I rate him but he had an ordinary summer. He needs to make yesterday's score the first of many.

Top scored today in what sounds like a cracking 50 overs match against NZ, which Scotland lost on the last ball of the 50th over, going for the run that would have tied the game.
His 83 from 86 balls was the innings of the match, and he out-batted a strong Kiwi line-up that included Guptil, Brownlie, Anderson, Munro and a brace of McCullums.
I'm sure he and Robinson will have had a long discussion about why he didn't quite 'kick on' (ugh - can't quite believe I said that!) for Sussex in 2014. Next season will be make-or-break for him. He will be 24 before the season starts and will really have to establish himself in the side. That's going to be tough, for if we take Nash/Wells/Joyce/Cachopa/Wright/Prior as an immovable top six, Machan will be in competition for the number seven spot with RHB, Yardy, Finch and - assuming Prior keeps wkt - Brown.
If he fails to become a regular first XI pick next season, he will surely have to move on as he will not have time on his side and will need to seize his opportunity at a weaker county (and based on the 2014 championship table, there are 15 of those to chose from - how good does it sound to be able to say that?)
I really hope he makes it because I like this lad, both as a cricketer and as a personality; he gives every impression of coming from the same charm school where Luke Wright was finished...

Sorry - didn't see that piperdog had opened a thread about Machan a few minutes before I wrote this.
In a way, my thread partly answers the questions he raised.
Esteemed moderators - can you combine the two?

Good innings from Machan but as others have eluded he needs to kick on next season after a hugely disappointing 2014 season.

Good HS knock of 86 today for Scotland against Joyce's Ireland. Joyce out for 5 in the reply.

Congratulations to Matt on his 108 v Ireland today (he must like batting against their attack!). It was precisely 103 more than his county captain managed to muster in reply!

Well done Matt Machan and Scotland. But piss poor by an Ireland team that had a top six that all played county cricket last season: Porterfield (Warwicks); Stirling (Middx); Joyce (Sussex); N O'Brien (Leics); Balbirnie (Middx); Wilson (Surrey); K O'Brien (Surrey).

Lots of competition for Matt this summer so some good scores in this tournament will be a help for his confidence going in to the new season.

Has signed a 3 year contract ( www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/contract-latest-machan-signs-new-three-year-deal-with-sussex ). Good news and with the stability that will give him he could become one of the most important players of the new Sussex. Last year his form varied from the spectacularly good to the wretchedly awful, his range of shots exciting and his lack of judgment on when to play them quite damning. If he does go to the BPL this winter he could do worse than use it as practice in playing spin. Perhaps it is a lack of concentration, and he showed that in the field where he gave away quite a few chances last year through seeming inattention. Let's hope that he moves on from that to the kind of consistency Luke Wright is now showing, and with the two of them on song Sussex could really have a classy middle order.

Can't add much to that, more good news

Good news, that's two youngsters now signed for 3 years. I'm still hoping there's a little left in the kitty for a couple of junior pro signings i.e Salt and Garton.

Yes hopefully, maybe we'll know more on that score after the Members Meeting. I presumed Robbo meant, only being able to afford two new seasoned pros, one of which will presumably be Briggs, the other a new overseas. Five senior players have already left, and there must be serious doubts about whether the injury hit Mills or Anyon will get full time contracts. That should leave plenty in the pot for a couple of Junior Pros.

Excellent news - of the youngsters who have emerged in recent years Machan is the one that stands out. One expects great things from him in the future.

Excellent news and I expect good things from him in the future if he can improve on his shot selection to cut-out the soft dismissals which meant that he didn't get the 1,000 championship runs last season.

Very harsh that assessment, for a young player he had an absolutely outstanding season
