That one is a surprise. Linley played one match for Sussex in 2006; I wonder if nine years between his first and second appearances will be a club record?
Chris Adams rated him highly and he had a spectacular season at Surrey when he enjoyed bowling with the notorious Tiflex ball (2011, I think). Then the ECB ended the Tiflex trial in div two and reverted to the Dukes and he struggled thereafter.
It really is an indictment of Sussex's form/fitness problems/bad karma/rotten luck that an entire XI of seamers - Maggofin, Jordan, Shahzad, Mills, Robinson, Hobden, Anyon, Hatchett, Liddle, Huson-Prentice and Piolet - requires reinforcement only two months into the season. And just as we thought a few of them were supposed to be returning to fitness...

As far as the list goes Magoffin desperately needs support as does Robinson; Hobden is for the moment a busted flush, needing time away from the critical onlookers to resolve his problems; Shahzad may need another week - clearly the diagnostics for the first announcement of his injury were just as wonky as they were for Yardy but in the opposite direction, away from health - and probably wouldn't benefit from having to bowl 30 overs on the flattest, most boring wicket in England; Anyon and Hatchett are both long shots for reappearance this year; Liddle has never threatened the first time; Piolet is a one-day bowler; Hudson-Prentice clearly wasn't ready to bowl in first-class cricket against Hampshire, though his batting could be very promising.

A pretty astonished reaction to news of the loan on the Surrey messageboard ovalworld.freeforums.net/thread/217/linley-sussex?page=1&scrollTo=2063, most comments expressing outrage that he has been loaned out when their own injury list is so long, but also containing this disturbing comment: "That really is bizarre. Given all the talk about managing our bowlers and their workload, I find it very surprising that the Club is comfortable with Linley going elsewhere for a month so soon after he's been recovering from major knee surgery. If the Viscount wasn't the person he is, you would feel there's something more to it."

In the Surrey squad v Kent at The Oval tonight, full of gratitude to Sussex for helping him to get fit after injury and to bowl himself back into Surrey's first XI!
