Only three spinners in the country have taken more wickets in the CC, and based on a minimum qualification of three matches and eight wkts, only Middlebrook and Rashid have a better average:-
Ansari 28 @33.25 Patel , Jeetan 26 @ 25.65 Kerrigan 25 @ 32.12 Wells 20 @ 25.25 Rayner 20 @ 27.55 Briggs 19 @ 37.42 Batty 18 @ 32.82 Patel, Samit 17 @ 32.94 Naik 16 @ 36.44 Rashid 15 @ 23.93 Salter 13@ 33.38 Middlebrook 11 @ 20.91 Dawson 10 @ 37.80 Saeed Ajmal 9 @ 44.11 Lloyd 9 @ 44.89

Wells is the best spinner at the club. This is why we so desperately need an overseas spinner as Burgoyne, Dockrell and Zaidi aren't the answer.

He really isn't. Beer completely and thoroughly out bowled Wells on a regular basis throughout their youth, the seconds and he would do now given the chance.

Doesn't mean I can't moan about it. I know who I'd rather leave. It also doesn't mean that I'm wrong. Wells is not the best spinner at the club, not even close. Proving useful though but he's a bat, an opening bat, someone may wanna remind JB.

I looked up the figures for spinners 5 years ago, at the height of the dominance of Swann and Panesar, and it is discouraging to see there were 5 players,3 Overseas, taking 50 or more wickets. It is just possible to see Patel and Ansari taking 50 now, but that is all. Hereis the list, showing those taking at least 10 wickets, those marked in red are overseas/kolpaks. Nice for Wells, who has taken every chance available to keep his place, but his average is low mainly because he is effective as a change bowler and isn't given long spells. His 20 wickets for 505 have come over 9 matches, in which he has bowled 126 overs and only 11 maidens. By contrast Zaidi, with a poorer average, has bowled 76 overs in 3 games with 23 maidens. I don't think Zaidi is a great model for spin bowling either, but putting the two together - which is what Robinson/Joyce has done - adds up to less than the sum of it's parts: there is neither the consistent pressure of tight bowling forcing batsmen into errors over long attritional spells, nor the exuberant rip of the genuine spinner who is prepared to be hit sometimes in buying his wickets. Wells doesn't have much choice about being hit.

I would rather Wells get 1200 CC runs scored at a good pace. I see he's ahead of Rashid! I'm surprised no one here is calling for him to be in the England set up!
If the captain continues to play safety (negative) cricket Sussex will be relegated. A little positive cricket. Be a little bold in selection. Or change the captain? Luke Wright is the man to take the club on. Joyce has done nothing to improve the team in CC and 50 overs in his time.
All change, all change

I think I'm right in saying that this is the first season that Wells has started bowling leg spin, having grown up bowling off breaks. It's to his credit that he has developed a new skill and had some success with it. English batsmen, especially lower order players are notoriously clueless against wrist spin, which makes Beer's complete lack of action in four day stuff more confusing considering we've had trouble getting through the tail without them doubling the score a few times this season. I was talking to someone at work yesterday who used to play with Will and knows him fairly well, and his off field habits didn't sound too professional to me. Perhaps that's why Robbo doesn't trust him, as I can't see many cricketing reasons for his total absence.
